  • Les salutations! :D
In a time before high speed express trains such as the TGV and the ICE criss-crossed Europe, and when domestic air travel was still a fledgling alternative, the nations of the near continent were connected through a series of luxury high speed trains which fell under the Trans Europe Express marque, one of the finest international express trains to ever run, but one queered by the prospect of inevitable decline as market forces rapidly turned against it.

At the end of the summer of 1976, and a month before starting school in Aix, I bought a one-month,first class Eurail Pass for $400(?). OMG. I lived like James Bond on those trains - even skipping hotel stays and sleeping on night services - four 4 glorious weeks. While my peers were back-packing in jeans - hitch-hiking and eating granola - I was wearing a navy blue worsted wool suit and tie and slicing into tender schnitzels, lol. I didn't need reservations. That pass was a carte blanche! I really enjoyed this video!!! Thank you Rory! 🤗 Oh, and near the end of the video was a demo of one of tge signature features of the french TEE - the electric louvered blinds embedded in the windows...!

One TEE Ram trainset is preserved in the Netherlands. I stood years at the Amsterdam Dijksgracht, rotting away. Until the end of 2021. Then it got preserved by the Dutch Transport Museum in Nieuw Vennep. Those people are working hard to get it back in the original state

Just some passenger cars though. The original power units were scrapped in Canada after technical problems.
None of the first generation TEE sets are currently operational. A German attempt to restore a 601 class train was aborted for cost overruns, but a number of vehicles are preserved non-operational in Koblenz, Augsburg and Nürnberg, with some more in Braunschweig used internally by railadventure at their "Zughotel" maintenance depot.

TEE was one of the coolest train brands ever, and a great idea at the time, with some very cool looking rolling stock. I feel like, with all the fuss over high speed rail these days, and environmental concerns etc, it could be a really good idea to bring the brand back, with some new cool rolling stock that evokes the same kind of ideals as the original, but newer and faster to compete with the likes of the TGV, ICE, Thalys etc.

East Germany had a service with Sweden called "The Berliner" which used the streamlined "VT 18.16" train sets that would very much fit in amongst these trains.
Those Rheingold panorama carriages where also used in Sweden in the early 2000's after deregulation.
Upstart train company "Tågkompaniet" had won the bid to run the night trains between Narvik/Luleå and Stockholm/Gothenburg and to gain some exclusivity they bought 5 Rheingold Panorama/Restaurant carriage's for use on those trains for a few years.

    Good documentary.
Just one clarification about the danish version of the DB 601. The danish version (class MA) were not repurposed TEE sets, but were built new in the early 60's. They also had a different makeup, with six intermediate cars instead of five. Two of the cars were also gangwayed cab cars, so the train could be split for fitting onto the Great Belt Ferry and so that it could serve two different destinations.

DSB class MA were not former TEE trains but a separate class, derived from DB class VT11 with the main difference that they could be split in the middle, which was required for going on train ferries and also allowed to split up and go to two different destinations.
The maximum speed was initially limited to 140 km/h, and the diesel units were designed for this. VT11 could reach 160 km/h but was underpowered, especially after being extended from the initial five middle cars (later up to eight). New electric trains introduced during the 1960s reached 160 km/h and regular 200 km/h operation started 1970 with SNCF's Le Capitole (even though DB class 103 allowed the same speed, difficulties with developing a reliable cab signalling system meant that anything above 160 km/h remained an experimental exception until 1978 or so).
The first generation diesel units, introduced in 1957 when there were still many gaps in European electrification, were deemed too slow and too small for the requirements just ten years later so they were phased out in the early 1970s. Nevertheless some lines in the TEE system were still not electrified, leading to diesel locomotive hauled trains such as the "Bavaria" between München and Lindau (electric further on to Zürich), a connection that remained diesel operated until 2020 when tilting "Astoro" trains took over on a fully electrified, slightly different route.
One factor not mentioned in the film were synchronised timetables, introduced in the 1970s/80s in various countries, with trains every one or two hours during the day and systematic connections at regular intervals. The TEE didn't fit into this system so in many cases no good connections to and from TEE could be offered. The Intercity system introduced from 1971 in Germany was practically equivalent to the TEE in first class, except for a few perks such as bar or dome cars. It was significantly expanded in 1979 and then also offered second class. Though the EuroCity, introduced 1987, used some coaches also previously used in TEE, it was not just an expansion of previously operating TEE trains by a second class section but also connected the clockface timetable systems of different countries, nicely integrating and offering good connections every one or two hours.
All TEE offered first class seating either in open spaces or compartments or both, and either a restaurant car or meal service at the seat (one exception being the "Merkur" to Denmark where meals could be taken on the ferry used by the train). Additional services offered by a few trains were dome cars (as shown), bar cars, in some cases mobile offices with a secretary who could type letters for a fee and make telephone connections, or occasionally even a hairdresser. Some of these services have completely disappeared, it seems like speed and reliability are more important than the frills of bygone eras. And a plug and wi-fi for your devices .... times are changing.

I remember seeing a traveling Maerklin model train layout (in a train car no less) back in '64 and it had the DB BR 601 TEE trainset. I thought it was the coolest train I had ever seen. Unfortunately I modeled Fleischmann not Maerklin so I couldnt get one, had to settle for an E10, which was still fairly cool.
Later, in high school we had a textbook that had a picture of the BR 601 crossing the Hohenzollernbruecke right in front of the Koelner Dom. I remember staring at it and daydreaming while the instructor blathered on about whatever.
Then in '95(?) I finally got to see one for real in the Verkehrsmuseum Nuernberg. Awesome. Never seen one run tho.

A fantastic remembrance of my first trips to Europe, in 1971, 72 and 73. I had a 1st class Eurailpass,
and would go out of my way to ride these wonderful trains. A favorite of mine was the Prinz Eugen,
from Wien to Bremen, and I rode it at least 3 times, though not the entire route.
The Eurail Pass is not the great deal that it used to be, as the price is now quite high, and more and more
national rail services are putting restrictions on pass-holders. SNCF is now only allowing a few seats on a train to be reserved for pass use, which I find shameful. DB still doesn't even require a seat reservation,
as far as I know, but that might change. Thanks for the great video! 😄

10:12 I'd just like to mention that DSB never had any TEE sets of their own and the set you showed in the picture was never used on TEE services. They were called the "Ma" sets and were inspired by the German class 601's yes, but they were designed and built domestically in Denmark at the Scandia works in Randers for the country's own domestic "Lightning train" services. These services were introduced in 1936, featured 2nd class from the start and are still around today. The MA trains, built in the 1960's and seen in the video were especially noteworthy for being halfsets so to speak. Each set only featured a single power car, with a number of carriages behind it, and a cabcar at the end with a passage below the cab. This was so these trains could fit onto the Danish train ferries, which all trains to and from Copenhagen leaving the island of Zealand had to use until 1997. But it also served a double function as the services could split with one of 2 coupled together sets serving one set of destinations, and the other half serving a different set. We still see this with Danish train services to this day operated by the even more flexible class IC3 and IR4 Flexliner multiple units, with a max speed of 112mph or 180km/h.
I'd also mention that one halfset of DSB's fleet exists in preservation, presented in the silver livery it bore in the 1980's where the fleet had been dubbed "Silver arrows". Their remaining sets were sold to Poland where they for a few short years were oddly used on run down rural railways, with max speeds as low as 40km/h.

The fact that the brand still does hold recognition and indeed even some mystique 30 years after its last use, does work in its favour. Whoever does so, will have to take good care of it though. 2 - When I worked at Oerlikon in 1963, they referred to THEIR TEE multi-system electric locomotives, using their own Ondulatingspannungmotor (probably misspelt - excuse me) which worked on a number of electrical systems. These were DC and AC systems, the latter being rectified by the then new high-power semiconductor rectifiers. They had regenerative braking where the motor dumped its generated power into huge, variable huge resistances = rheostats, whence "Rheostatic braking". Are these the same as, or confused with, the SIG locos mentioned in the video? And wasn't that SIG-SAUER? (Incidentally Sig in German is pronounced Zig). The factory was called Maschinenfabrikoerlikon, and was in the same suburb (ie Oerlikon) of Northern Zürich as the gun factory. The company was later taken over by Braun-Bovery which itself ceased some years later.
The Germans have nice long words, consisting of several words joined together. My favourite was the personnel office, whose door bore the legend:
    MASCHINENFABRIKOERLIKONPERSONELBURO. I was 21 then and I'm 80 now.....

Yes and no. They had the same roots, but SIG Sauer no longer has anything to do with the original SIG. In the past, SIG mainly built bogies for trains.

Just one little snag!! The Danish Railroad did not have electric operation on mainline on till 1997 when Storebælt connection was opened!! So no electric TEE in Denmark, we had diesel!!!
    One word RESEARCH!!
Buy the way TEE was transformed into EC (EuroCity) operations where capitals of Europe was bound together from international railways, which also had second class.
    Kind regards the Danish Viking

    0) In the Netherlands, we credit our then CEO of NS (Dutch state railways), F.Q. den Hollander, with the concept of TEE.
    1) Yes, TEE was quite a brand. It may return, but its achievements and standards definitely live on in many long-distance rail services. ("Long-distance" in the perception of Europeans outside vast countries Russia and Ukraine.) Note me saying "long-distance", not "international".
Sidebar: my first holiday job was in 1974: cleaning passenger trains at Amsterdam Centraal station. We would superficially clean the trains in teams of three: a foreman (who'd collect all explicit magazines) and two real workers (collecting newspapers, emptying waste bins) within 15 or 20 minutes, no problem. The night train from Nice(?) was to be handled by two teams in 45 minutes (before being taken to a maintenance yard for cleaning the toilets, etc.), hurry! (Imagine six persons in a compartment with hardly a waste bin for some twelve hours. I don't think this train had sleeping cars.)
    2) I do see problems, though: time-table conflicts. Each railway network (not necessarily a country, I think) creates its own "optimal" time-table, but inter-network trains are likely to interfere with these (even though they are the basis of European railway time-tables). Or they could be treated as local trains (local to the network), but then they are likely to lose any speed advantage that should attract inter-network (long-distance) travellers. (Example: the hourly Intercity between Amsterdam and Brussels.)
Example: Amsterdam Centraal station is at the start of a gigantic reconstruction, and Amsterdam Zuid station is at the start of quite a reconstruction as well (adding a third island platform). Afterwards, all international trains will call or terminate at Zuid, so that Centraal can handle intensified national services.
    3) There may well be a capacity issue too, as international travel has been increasing for decades (at least in Europe). I can clearly remember the Brussels-bound 2-part EMU being part of an hourly Flushings-bound train from Amsterdam until Roosendaal. Currently it's a 6..9-coach hourly train, and (in my outdated perception) often crammed.
Or the Amsterdam - Berlin Intercity. Either it runs in addition to national Dutch trains, interfering with the national time-table, or it runs in the "path" (time slot) of a national train, and is less equipped for the numbers of passengers getting on and off it.
    4) Obviously, adding "fast" tracks to current railways would likely solve these problems. I'm unlikely to see that day.

One or both of the Rheingold "dome"-cars ended up in Sweden in the late 90's. Refurbished to modern standard, but the plexiglass dome was exactly the same. They were put on the Stockholm-Narvik route through northern Sweden over to Norway by the private carrier Tågkompaniet, before that company folded in the early 2000's. The whereabouts after that are unknown to me.

The Golden Knight card is unlocked upon reaching King Level 14. He is a single-target melee troop who targets grounded units. He has high hitpoints and moderate damage per second. Being a Champion card, he will stay out of the player's card cycle while he is deployed, and only return once he is destroyed. The Golden Knight's ability increases his movement speed when no enemies are nearby, and causes him to dash onto enemies in sequence, similar to the Electro Spirit's attack. He has golden hair and is outfitted in gilded breastplate and gauntlets, as his name implies, and wields an impressively large sword. A Golden Knight card costs 4 Elixir to deploy, and his ability costs an additional 1 Elixir. The Golden Knight has a special ability, accessible from the rightmost side of the screen just above the player's card slots in battle. After a 1 second delay, the Golden Knight activates his "Dashing Dash", gaining a movement speed boost if he is not within 5 tiles of an enemy unit. Once a unit is in range, he dashes to it quickly, then dashes towards any other units within a 5-tile radius (even if the previous unit was not destroyed). His dashes have invulnerability and deal increased damage, like the Bandit. He cannot dash into the same troop per ability use. He will stop dashing after dashing 10 times or if no other valid targets are within range. The ability goes on an 11 second cooldown after the duration ends. The Dashing Dash ability costs 1 Elixir to activate. It is also important to note that his movement speed boost cannot be reset or cancelled by The Log, Zap, Freeze confirmation needed or other things that will normally stop a charge.
    Strategy
For the purposes of determining Elixir trades, the Golden Knight and his activated Ability count as 5 Elixir, as the player must play the 4 Elixir Knight and then spend a further 1 on his Ability. While he runs to the tower, use a cheap card like Skeletons to make him dash from the tower into said cheap card. If done correctly, this can be used to cause him to chain dash into the King's Tower and activate it. Because of this, it is not recommended to use his Dashing Dash if there isn't a target. For the reason mentioned above, he can act like an Electro Spirit: Potentially lots of value, but can also be a double edged sword if you accidentally activate the opponent's King Tower. Though this isn't recommended due to the cooldown, the Golden Knight's ability can be used to counter swarms. The Golden Knight is unique in the fact that he can dash onto multiple targets, like a Knight and Tower, and still attack the original target. Because of this, it can be hard to defend against. For example, if a Valkyrie is approaching a tower, the defender will use a Knight to avoid all damage, but if a Golden Knight is approaching and the defender places a Knight close to the tower, it will dash onto the tower, making the defense less valuable. If the player has a unit on the board that they do not want the enemy Golden Knight to reach, they must play more ground units as far away from it as possible to entice the Knight to charge into the more expendable units instead. Due to his low damage output, a glass cannon or mini-tank such as Mini-P.E.K.K.A. or Prince can easily take him out. Once the Golden Knight uses ability, he will not target any units behind him unless they are in range. In other words. The Dashing Dash ability only chains to the troops that the Golden Knight can see.

The first TEE trains weren´t electric because the electrification was not enough developped, and there were a lot of diesel and steam operated services in 1957. Electric rolling stock was developped when there were enough international electrified lines. Oh, by the way, there were no electrified main lines in Denmark until the 80´s and the Spanish 3 kV wasn´t used by the Swiss trains because of the broad gauge of the Spanish network...
