    WOW! Youve taken me back to many different, exciting times in my life. I remember buying Jess Franco's "Barbed Waire Dolls" from a bloke in a market in Glasgow ( I'm from there) after sending him a letter through an ad in one of the horror fanzies of the time in the late 80's. Then moving to London and entering the magical place that was Camden Film Fair. In the 90's it was THE place to get all sorts of f**ked up stuff, XXX, horror, Japanese Pinku films, Hong Kong Cat 3 etc. I've still got my bootleg VHS of Fulci's "Nightmare City" and a few other ones lying around. That golden period from the video recordings act to DVD was a film adventurers heaven, great video man, cheers!

    Really cool video. The time of video nasties was before I was born (1991) but I’ve always been so fascinated by. Seems so quant to me that people were so outraged by these movies that they were outright banned. My dad said that back then he and his pals would get together at the weekend to watch these movies when someone could get their hands on one, didn’t matter what it was

  • @SurvivorsGuilt

    That was super fascinating! And I never had any idea that bootlegs were so sought after, that is very interesting. And that’s kind of a fun haul, but unless you are up to speed on all those things, you’d have no idea of the value of all those tapes. It would have been completely lost on me. That was a great and entertaining video TYTD, great job! Cheers 🍻

      Hay thanks man! and yeh! totally agree! its one of those areas that a lot of people either know very little about or have preset expectations and dont think it's anything worth looking into, but some of the stories I heard while researching for this one were just amazing! properly bizarre encounters where people would get stopped in UK customs and taken to a dark backroom for trying to bring "Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2" into the country! It was a VERY bizarre time to be into horror movies over here honestly. it's still not much better either! but the internets helped to break down a lot of the barriers, so thats a plus!

    The U.K. pre-cert of Evil Dead on Palace is cut, not as much as the later 18 version but the same cut version the U.K. got in cinemas. Evil Dead II was cut in the U.K. on VHS too, but only slightly. The pre-cert VHS of Cannibal Holocaust was also very, very far from uncut, censored by at least six minutes.

    Nth generation copies of UK banned films on VHS! Brought back a lot of memories of trading those types of videos as a teen! I miss the scuzzy quality of UK banned horror films on video, it just added something extra to the trepidation and thrills of finally getting hold of a particularly notorious banned film. When I knew my video recorder was on its way out, I transferred loads of videos just so I could always have that nostalgia from time to time. Thanks so much for this vid!

      Hay man thanks for dropping by and im glad I helped bring back a little nostalgia :) I totally agree with you, theres nothing quite like getting your hands on these kinds of tape and wondering not only if the quality is going to be up to snuff, but if whats listed as being on the tape is even the right thing! I dunno, the nasties just seem even nastier when they're from unofficial channels. it's a total thrill :) I think thered really be a market for battered nth generation dubs of old horror films, even as extra features. kind of like a "Nasty" cut for people who want that murky questionably sinister edge.

Oh man! im so SO sorry to hear it!" but yeh; big hauls these days are harder and harder to find. quite a few collectors are so switched on now they'll pay top dollar for 100 reasonable tapes just to skim off 3 or 4 that'll be worth big money and then bin off the rest! it's a bit of a sad state of things. as i've regularly seen collectors throw away tapes they think are worthless, but i'd take off their hands.

    Excellent video. You should do more essays. I collected nasty era VHS for a while in the early 2010s after watching the marc morris docs. I managed to snag original copies of Don't go in the House, Driller Killer, Inferno and Zombie Flesh Eaters (wrong clamshell) before packing it in. The prices were insane then. I can't imagine how much they are now.
    Also, mystery film on tape 8 = Giallo In Venice.

      Hey man! thanks for dropping by! From the sounds of it you managed to grab a few mainstays of the era! I've always kept an eye out for Driller Killer and ZFE on tape, but they've always just been tantalisingly out of reach. When someone sold me an original "Evil Dead" for £50 I thought i'd landed a bargain. These days just VHS covers can sell for upwards of £20-£40, there are ones I picked up for £30 about 6-7 years ago going for £70 now and lord help you if your looking for rarer tapes like "Cannibal Holocaust" or "The Devil Hunter" those ones easily go for between £200 and £600 depending on condition.
      Nowadays; I rarely if ever pick up tapes because even the facebook marketplace "Bulk" sellers are asking £50-£70 for a box full of late 90's retail tapes. that being said I do still nab the occasional bargain when the planets align. but I dont buy nearly as much as I used to, which is a bit of a shame...
      and thanks so much for letting me know about tape 8! funnily enough i've had the bluray of that one sat on my amazon wishlist for the longest time. I may pull the trigger on it and see what the fuss is about!

    awesome little history into the bootleg side of the nasties. didnt know about the smuggling of tape inside clothing, which is dedication i admire as a horror fan.
    fun fact: while the extreme censorship here in germany has significantly loosend, some movies remain banned here. i imported the same release of Day of the Dead u got in the background, which is still banned for "glorification of violence". if someone checked the package and knew their shit they could have confiscated it and given me a fine. which i would have refused to pay out of principle.

      Hay! thanks for watching :) and yeh! this journey unveiled a real time capsule! a bit I didnt really include in this video (because it kind of happened more in the 90's than the late 80's) but a resurgence of the "Ban the nasties!" type aggression happened around 1993/1994 when a young kid was murdered by two other boys who *allegedly* managed to rent "Childs Play 3" (They didnt, a parent rented it and kept it in a different house to the one the kids lived in...but you know how the press love a good sensational story) so they tried to get a ton of late 80's early 90's horror banned. and some of these violence/exploitation compilation reels were pulled up by the moral crusaders of the time as examples of the depravity that these horror fans would sit watching endlessly on a loop.
      Mercifully enough people kind of had the sense to realise that the reason those reels existed in the first place was because the films the extracts came from wern't allowed in the country and that the films themselves were more goofy than instructional and things stopped short of a Video Nasties 2.0 incident. but in another timeline I'd have probably been burnt at the stake for owning "The Exorcist 3" which would have been a bit of a downer! 😂

      @@TYTDReviews Wow, I'd be down for a "sequel" of sorts where you talk about the later legacy of the anti-nasty movement in the UK. It's always about the murder cases for the 90s, huh...
      It seems wild to me that in 93 that managed to stir up again, because I live in Portugal, a former censor-heavy dictatorship. After that was over in the mid-70s our new BBC-equivalent executives, as well as politicians in general, were VERY against moral censorship, and have remained so.

    • @TYTDReviews
      @TYTDReviews  3 года назад

      Yeh things got pretty crazy over here in the 90's! there were two major incidents that kind of triggered it all off. there was an incident where a vulnerable person went out and attacked/killed a bunch of people with a machete and the press blamed it on the fact he'd watched "Rambo 3" (which he hadnt, his parents had rented it...he'd never seen it) and the murder of of a kid in 1993/94 by two other kids who the press claimed had seen "Childs play 3" recently.
      The reality was that the politicians and moral crusaders who thought films were going to raise a generation of serial killers in the 80's were still as certain this was the case in the 90's and they'd just been waiting for an excuse to jump back into the picture and start making out that we were all doomed if we didnt ban everything right now. Politicians over here are happier to restrict thing than they are to be more liberal so they often sided with these media censor fiends.
      even now; they're looking into ways to restric and censor certain films from entering the country. But I like to think a lot of people are more switched on these days and know that violent films or games arnt going to corrupt people...I like to THINK thats the case at least xD

    33:20 That's not true, A Clockwork Orange never got a home video release in the UK in 1988, Stanley Kubrick withdrew the movie in 1973 following death threats and copycat violence and the movie remained unavailable in the UK legally either on home video, cinema or TV airings until Stanley Kubrick's death in 1999 (the film was rereleased in cinemas in 1999 and finally made it's way to video in the UK in 2000). I believe Warners were planning to release it in the pre cert era but Kubrick pulled the plug.
    No UK VHS copy of A Clockwork Orange from 1988 exists and if you find a sleeve for it floating around online, that is not an official sleeve, it's a custom proof of concept sleeve I designed a few years ago (I also did a Pre Cert sleeve as well).

    It's cool that 'showcasing old home recorded tapes' has become a genre of YT videos, but this video is soooo far up my alley it's not even funny. I have a huge thing for bootleg exploitation tapes, so far I've only managed to buy some bootleg p×rno tapes (at a still operating video store about 10 mins from my home), which are definitely sleezy but nowhere near as cool or significant as these. I don't really get jelous, but WOW, that's one hell of a great find. Awesome video, instantly subscribed 🔥
    P.S. I'd wonder if the Urotsukidoji tape was ripped from the Japanese LaserDisc considering the high picture quaity and no subs. At least in the USA, lots of people would import Japanese/European NTSC LDs and make their boots from those, as they often were the highest quality and simplest (or ONLY) way to get certain films totally uncut (aside from blurred genitals in the case of Japanese LDs).

    • @TYTDReviews
      @TYTDReviews  2 месяца назад

      Hi thanks so much for the kind words! To answer your question regarding whether a mouldy tape can really be saved, the answer is...Kinda! Theres been a lot of conversation over the years about how mouldy tapes 'infect' VCR's and how, if tapes are mouldy they're unplayable. But I havent seen any evidence to suggest your putting your other tapes at risk by cleaning and playing a previously mouldy one.
      Realistically, with some proper care and attention, mouldy tapes can be cleaned and will playback fine, it will however depend on how far gone the tape is with mould, and what condition the tape was in prior to it being mouldy as to how good the playback will be. I've had tapes absolutely full to the brim with mould that have cleaned up and played back fine. But it is very much a 'tape by tape' basis.
      The thing to bear in mind with mouldy tapes however, is that once a tape has mould, the process of the tape itself breaking down has begun. it will eventually go mouldy again unless its stored in optimum condtions...and even then it'll eventually turn. repeatedly clearning them as and when mould incidents occur will help give the tape a good long life. But eventually no matter how much care is put in, the tape will just get eaten.
      BUT! that does still mean you could easily have another 10-20 years with a tape after cleaning it. So I wouldnt toss any away!
      and I picked the rotating display up from Amazon about 5-6 years ago :) I cant remmeber the brand name as it has been a while, but if you search 'Electric model turntable' it should bring some stuff up :)

      It sounds contradictory, but I think censorship in some ways breeds a liberal mindset. a government put restrictions on what can be seen on screen and people start asking why, film makers start looking for workarounds and in certain cases the indie scene will blast right through the censors producing content that; in many ways is even WORSE than what the governments were originally trying to censor.
      Bizarrely; I think had censors not gotten involved a lot of graphic icons (Herschell Gordon Lewis, Lloyd Kaufman, John Waters...even David Lynch to a certain extent) probably wouldnt be anywhere near as recognised as they are.
