Marlon Brando lived a succesfull but tragic life, he had 16 children, his son died in prison and daughter killed herself. He had multiple lovers, brang his kids to california once so that's about the california part. This lyric says you cant see the real world without sorrow or understanding what it really is.
What he's saying is "You can't see California without Marlon Brando's eyes.". Apparently some homeless guy was shouting it at people on the street and Corey found the quote interesting and decided to use it. The pig mask is Bassist Paul Grey (RIP) He did go on to use variations of the pig motif but not as direct and obvious as this one. As for the vocal performance, I myself, am a death metal vocalist and can do growled/screamed vocals for hours and still be ok. It does take a lot of practice to be able to "scream" like that and still be able to talk properly afterwards. there is in fact a vocal coach who goes by the name of Melissa Cross who released a DVD called "The Zen of Screaming" which is what I used to teach myself how to do it properly. She has been the vocal coach to a huge amount of metal vocalists including Corey Taylor, David Draiman (Disturbed) and lead vocalists from Lamb of God, Slayer etc... the list goes on and on
back in 99’ Corey was NOT using any vocal technique. These were just some pure, rough dirty vocal fries and the only conclusion I can think of why he didn’t destroy his vocal cords is simple- look at the size of his fkn neck
Corey has changed the way he does his screaming over the course of his career. In the beginning, especially on the first two albums, he basically didn't use any sort of technique and just went all out. Nowadays he actually does it in a healthy way.
Yea, an a few interviews he mentioned he had to actually go to a vocal coach and learn how to use his whole throat and larynx. For the 1st 2 albums he basically just went in raw. Plus doing the same on tour couple with all of the dope he was smoking he almost destroyed his throat. After shows he'd be in his hotel coughing up blood in the toilet while his then wife was holding his hair out of his face. He said it wasn't until he learned to think of his voice as an instrument that it finally clicked and he started hitting the God tier levels of vocals he's been on since their 3rd release.
As much as I wish he would’ve dropped Iowa 2.0, I prefer that he stopped screaming that way to save his voice, Iowa 2.0 might’ve ended his career too early
I love it so so so much, but Iowa is my favorite metal record ever because it is brutal in ways self titled isn’t which is saying a lot about these first two albums
I think it just depends where your head is at, at the moment, I’d say there first album is more about suffering from psychosis, and Iowa is more about being tired of hated everything
This song and “Sic” are the first two songs I hear from Slipknot and sold me on the band. Instant maggot. I’m a drummer and as a kid with a lot anger when this album came out it was everything. This song hit all my angry kid nerves and energy. Also I didn’t know my real dad growing up and the verse in this song when he speaks about his dad hit close at the time.
I remember my younger brother bringing this album back home and I totally couldn’t handle it… like how the hell could you hear that stuff… next week I was totally hooked till this day. Slipknot was my entry to aggressive badass metal. Thanks bro!
Not to be a stickler but Pan’s Labyrinth isn’t based on a video game, it’s a totally original idea written by Del Toro. It’s a spiritual successor to his film The Devil’s Backbone
The guy wearing that pig mask was their bassist Paul Gray. He wore a few different various of mask still keeping that sort of pig aesthetic. Sadly he passed away after their All Hope Is Gone record. May he Rest In Peace.
@@TheAngryMoth104 Corey's warm up before shows in the self titled/Iowa days was screaming as hard as he could for a few minutes, then huffing a dead crows corpse out of a glass jar that clown had. Then throwing up...then go on stage and sing. I'm sure nowadays he's warms up properly. His voice now is not as harsh as when Slipknot came out, but back then he was considered an extreme metal vocalist.
Actually not quite like this - doing this blew his voice out while touring for Iowa and had to change his style. This is using a really damaging technique, but damn if the rawness and brutality isn't fucking legendary.
It's simply that he learned the proper way to use distortion. There's more than one way to make distorted vocals but some of them are extremely unhealthy and damaging and others are healthier and thus safer. Corey went to a vocal coach to learn how to properly utilize distortion after he blew out his voice from doing it improperly. That's why he sounds different on later records--he uses a different vocal approach.
Only reason Corey still has his vocal cords is because he went to the vocal instructor Melissa Cross. She's a juilliard trained vocal coach who fell in love with metal and screaming and felt passionate to teach people how to properly scream without damaging their vocal cords. If you listen to his newer stuff his screams are more metal core oriented unlike his older screams which are more punk derived. Either way he is a vocal beast and a god among men. Keep up the good work guys! Loving the videos!

Went to the show last night in MA. it was amazing ! You so have to go to the Knotfest Road show when the23rd when it's in GA. Well I am going back to bed we didn't get home until 2:00. I had to get up to watch Slipknot Sat. though and Eyeless is one of my favorites
I remember watching a short 10 or 20 minutes mini-film made by Clown, Corey was in it. I think it was more than 10 years ago. Pig mask was dropped when they had a beef with Mushroomhead, their bassist also used to have pig mask.
Shawn Crahan (clown) actually filmed with rob zombie. Also Paul Gray (RIP) wore the pig mask but had to remove it in later albums because one of the members of mushroom head was going to sue him for it. He then chose to use the Hannibal lechtar mask
It's funny you should bring up not recognizing the pig mask and I've brought this up before but I think they changed his mask cuz people pointed out so many similarities between Slipknot and Mushroomhead, who's bassist also wore a pig mask and went by the stage name "Pig Benis"
The chorus is saying "You can't see California without Marlon Brando's eyes." The reason for that is because when Corey was in L.A, he heard a homeless guy screaming it and it just stuck with him. From what I've read, this song is based on how pissed off his time having to attend Alateen or Alanon was, which I believe was a rehab program for teenage alcoholics and drug users because they kept telling him his problems were "all in his head." If I'm remembering correctly. How that ties with a homeless person screaming about Marlon Brando; I'm not sure but still an awesome song!!
I see we are back on the early slipknot again😆 This song has always felt pretty unique to me. The "can't see California without Marlon brando's eyes" line definitely adds to that. It's apparently what a homeless dude shouted at corey at one point and corey decided to put it in a song. And 2 things. The pig mask was Paul. He only wore it on the self titled and then wore others for each album after that he was on (rip). And corey did break his voice. He just forced it for the first 2 albums, where his iowa scream was even worse that his debut for his voice, and then blew it out. He had to reteach himself how to scream afterward but now learn the techniques to it, which is why on vol.3 he sounds so different than he previously did. I think he has ended up forcing it again at certain points but I don't think he's blown his voice out since back then.
Paul wore the pig mask in the beginning. Clown AKA Shawn Crahan was in a movie musical called the Devils Carnival along with many other famous musicians from bands like Skinny Puppy, Five Finger Death Punch and others. I saw them here in Atlanta at the Masquerade when they Opened for Machine Head back in 1999. That was their first time through these parts. Next time they came here was the same place but Kittie Opened up for themselves.
Favorite track on Self Titled! these are the sickest fucking screams Mr Corey Taylor has ever pulled off… the first two albums from slipknot and deftones have hip hop influence. “You can't see California without Marlon Brando's eyes" is a quote lead singer Corey Taylor took from a homeless guy on the street while he was in California. The guy was just saying it over and over again, The song was partly inspired by Corey's father, as seen in the phrase "I am my father's son, cause he's a phantom, a mystery, and that leaves me nothing!"
I love all the albums and most of their songs but the first two albums are absolutely insane and two of my all time favorite albums of all time. Pantera, Lamb of God, Jinjer are also a few on the top of my list. You guys should check out some Berried alive if you want to see some insane guitar work. Charles Caswell and his wife Kaylie are doing crazy stuff on guitar. Love the channel by the way!!!
Just started watching you guys. I know you guys were wanting a live suggestion for Nine Inch Nails. Also Nine Inch Nails was solely Trent Reznor until he invited Atticus Ross to be a main member in 2016. Trent plays and arranges most everything in the studio except for some instances where he hires musicians. He then translates the songs to be played live with a full band that he hires. If you want an amazing live show then watch his songs “March of the Pigs,” “Reptile,” “Wish,” “Somewhat Damaged,” or “The Big Come Down.” Any one of those is a pretty good starting point. The best thing is that there’s a LOT of NIN live material on RUclips and they slay it live. Thanks for the cool channel guys.
I feel like its worth noting here that Corey had literally no idea what he was doing in terms of how to scream until All Hope is Gone (album 4/6). Which means he was literally screaming his lungs out for every song while simultaneously drinking and smoking, far more than the average person nearly every day. It's a wonder his voice has held up at all, let alone this well.
For the 13 days of Halloween, a few good slipknot songs to check out would be Virus of life, Prosthetics, and Skin ticket. Also when you guys get some time check out bring me the horizon cover of eyeless its dope.
I know Chino also destroyed his vocal chords early on. He finally got proper technique down though. As far as it goes with Corey Taylor all I can say is have you seen the size of this man's neck?? I know it probably has nothing to do with technique, but it looks like Corey's throat is thick like a damn tree trunk. His scream has clearly changed over the years, but it sure seems like he was built for this style of music.
About if slipknot has been in a movie. Corey had a roll in Fear Clinic with Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger), Clown has an unmasked cameo in The Vatican Tapes at the end. And the whole band appears performing in a movie called RollerBall if I remember the title correctly!
There was a homeless guy in cali that stopped them and was persistnt with telling them " you cant see california without marlon brandos eyes" ( however marlon brando is spelled)
This is the only Slipknot track I get down with and it's mainly because of that dope-ass Drum&Bass break! Seriously, you guys need to react to Godflesh - "I, Me, Mine" for more old school breaks infused with metal.
That first Self-Titled record is always gonna be my favourite Slipknot. I'd still love to see you guys do Me Inside and No Life. Re: masks, they also change their masks every album so they only keep the original for so long before changing it up for next album/round of touring.

I SEE THE BOYS LIVE TOMORROW, PUMPED,just watched the encore from last nights show, they finished with People =Shit and Sic
Mick should just play Frank Castle in The Punisher. But with his mask on 24/7
This, SIC and Disasterpieces are still their best 3 songs for me.
For the 13 days of Halloween, a few good slipknot songs to check out would be Virus of life, Prosthetics, and Skin ticket. Also when you guys get some time check out bring me the horizon cover of eyeless its dope.
my fave slipknot song. good stuff
Amazing brothers!!
I LUV THIS SONG LMFAO AHH
also, paul gray died in 2010 due to drug overdose. RIP Paul
I'm tellin' y'all.. both the self titled debut and 'Iowa' are brutal, dark, and fucked up. You haven't even really heard the best of them yet.
It's old school now, but its worth watching the 'literal' video of this song. Hilarious stuff circa 2006.
Eyeless is Slipknot's best song IMO
I know Chino also destroyed his vocal chords early on. He finally got proper technique down though. As far as it goes with Corey Taylor all I can say is have you seen the size of this man's neck?? I know it probably has nothing to do with technique, but it looks like Corey's throat is thick like a damn tree trunk. His scream has clearly changed over the years, but it sure seems like he was built for this style of music.
The one with the pig mask is Paul Gray (R.I.P.) the original bassist
I had this playing for my Jr. Research essay paper. On Marlon Brando. Yeah definitely got iss. Cause the fucks in the song.
I’m more of a pantera person but this album is off the charts🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
I look forward to Saturdays now because of slipknot Saturdays. 🤘🤘🤘🤘
This album was so great for the rawness and energy being 1000%. You should check out diluted of this album. My personal favorite!
Corey Taylor was in Sharknado 4 and Bad Candy (2020)
About if slipknot has been in a movie. Corey had a roll in Fear Clinic with Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger), Clown has an unmasked cameo in The Vatican Tapes at the end.
And the whole band appears performing in a movie called RollerBall if I remember the title correctly!
There was a homeless guy in cali that stopped them and was persistnt with telling them " you cant see california without marlon brandos eyes" ( however marlon brando is spelled)
Shawn (Clown) was in Devil’s Carnival, pretty sure Corey’s been in some stuff
This album dude. You heard this live you couldn't help but hitting someone next to you!
"Liberate Bananas" LMAO!!!
Corey Taylor does act in a movie along with Robert Englund called, "Fear Clinic".
This is the only Slipknot track I get down with and it's mainly because of that dope-ass Drum&Bass break! Seriously, you guys need to react to Godflesh - "I, Me, Mine" for more old school breaks infused with metal.
Pig mask is Paul Gray
Please review tallah vanilla paste ..... It's a collab between tallah, fire from the gods, chelsea grin and gorilla warfare..... So awesome.
That first Self-Titled record is always gonna be my favourite Slipknot. I'd still love to see you guys do Me Inside and No Life.
Re: masks, they also change their masks every album so they only keep the original for so long before changing it up for next album/round of touring.
