    Boosted was once king of the electric skateboard. Now they are on the verge of going out of business. How the mighty have fallen. In this video I explain why Boosted Board failed and I compare their business practices with Future Motion, the makers of the Onewheel. Is Future Motion doomed to follow the same course as Boosted? I explain why and why not.

      If you look at the parts, the battery, motor, and controller are your most expensive parts.. I think a company with deep pockets could come in and drop the price of the XR to 700. They are also selling accessories for an ungodly amount. Pieces of plastic that cost $100? I think its a matter of time before someone does it better and cheaper.

    Great analysis Jimmy! I really didn't expect Boosted to last very long after seeing they left one small market to try and make money in another small market. Both markets being saturated with Chinese dominated products that were just getting better and less expensive. I think the original Boosted founders saw this coming and he left at the perfect time (at the height of the Neistat marketing boost). Once a more traditional CEO joined that didn't really understand what made Boosted so great things were bound to go downhill fast. The lackluster launch of the Rev just expedited the issue. I have been into electric scooters for a long time and know it very well. Once I rode the Rev and saw what it would face in the near and long term I knew Boosted would be in trouble. There aren't enough Boosted fans that wanted a scooter and anyone that had any experience with scooters knew there are better options around.
    I think Future Motion should be in a better place. The CEO is still there and he seems fine not growing very fast. It is also cool that he is the most avid Onewheel user around. The 3.2M from VC may have already been paid off with the good launch of the Pint. There have been no solid knock-offs of the Onewheel yet. It still holds a unique place in the PEV world. It may also stay there for a while as the market for EUCs and the Onewheel is very small relative to the other PEV options. If Future Motion is cool with just staying profitable and not going public it may be able to be around for a bit. There are plenty of companies around that are profitable but will never go IPO or want to sell off.

    Great analysis @Jimmy Chang, I think you nailed it on the head by putting Boosted's issues' fault on the excessive VC funding they raised.
    Without the pressure for hypergrowth, I doubt that they would have taken the risk of competing in the e-scooters' crowded market, instead of continuing to lead in the e-skateboards field, or at least not as aggressively as they did.
    What's ironic about this, that I'm sure you already know but didn't mention in the video, is that they had an obvious warning of the risks involved through Inboard Technology's demise, which after introducing a very promising e-skateboard (the M1) went belly-up when trying to penetrate the e-scooter market!

    I think their next opportunity for growth is going to be dependent on battery technology so they can make longer range board for cheaper. $1,000 is still too much for most people as an entry level hobby.

      It would seem that a lot of people don't think that is too high a cost for the product, and as Jimmy mentions in one of his videos, the cost is in line with an expensive cell phone these days. I was actually thinking of upgrading to the iPhone 10 when I found out about the Pint, and put my money there instead. So glad that I did.
      I very much agree with your assessment of Onewheel being a niche market for someone looking for the kind of ride only this board provides. That is what did it for me as a long time snowboarder. I never was really very enticed by the idea of riding a scooter, hoover board, or electric unicycle. If I want better speed or range, I'll take my motorcycle.

    I think a huge part is the fact that they are just as much, if not, more than the One Wheel XR and/or Pint. But, they are longboards. You can go over grass, gravel, sand, etc. with a One Wheel, but, from personal experience with a longboard, you hit a small pebble on the sidewalk just right, you get STOPPED right there and fly off. And also, they both have around the same performance, speed and range. But also, the One Wheel is just so much more rugged, has no remote you have to constantly use and make sure is charged on top of the board itself, One Wheel has WAY more customizability while Boosted has like, none, and, hey, it has tail and head lights.

This is more concerning to me than most as I play instruments that really require hands (Piano, Cello). Wow, nice analysis Jimmy, & great analogy to Segway. I really don't want to see a scooter with one wheel or a Onewheel-branded scooter. By organically growing I think you mean through the profits made from the sale of its own core products. I don't know anything about the cost of production and costs of selling of the Onewheel but given how they've been coming out with new & improved versions the original Onewheel over time, which have proven to be popular, coupled with only a relatively small amount of investors, I am guessing they're in good shape.

    • @nicobrentan
      @nicobrentan 4 года назад +4

      I don't have any information regarding OW's production costs nor therefore Future Motion's profit margins, but I do know that they leave relatively little margin for retailers. The gross reseller margin (MSRP - wholesale price) for the OW is only 20-25% vs. 30-50% for most other micro-mobility vehicles (with Chinese e-scooter often even above 50%).
      Furthermore, they have stringent vendor agreements that forbid most resellers from selling OWs online to prevent cannibalization of their direct online sales (which give them the highest profits) or even from selling 3rd party OW accessories, since they wouldn't make any profit on those.
      I think they are in a pretty good situation right now, but they are allowed to operate in this fashion and keep their progit margins high because they don't have any truly direct competitors (I consider e-skateboards to be indirect). So it will be interesting to see what would happen if and when they'll get serious, direct competition; what's sure is that the consumers would benefit!

    Even with all that VC money they only offered esk8s with street wheels vs. Evolve’s all terrain Bamboo/Carbon series. I rode an Evolve Bamboo GTR and the larger all terrain wheels (with the option to add knobby tires) allowed me to go further on my commutes. But the motors on the Evolve boards were prone to failure for me because they are exposed by vents, a point of weakness up here in Canada during the winters. I ended up grabbing a second board from China from Backfire. I wouldn’t say that Chinese esk8 brands are knock offs, they just spend a bit of time figuring out where other brands are lacking and then offer a product to fill the void. Fast forward to today, my esk8s are great, but limited in more varied off road terrain due to low clearance, especially with the battery under the deck. I’m now waiting for my One Wheel to arrive as I’m going through the motions of not being in motion during a lengthy stay at home lock down.

I never liked riding near cars because I knew I could hit a pebble and be screwed. And forget about cutting through alleyways with giant cracks and potholes etc. The Onewheel is a game changer. You can basically snowboard without snow, or a chairlift or lift pass etc. Snowboarding is expensive and it’s a huge market. The Onewheel is actually cheaper by comparison. I don’t have to drive 100km, buy a lift pass and buy all the gear needed to snowboard. It’s a perfect product. So I think they have a great chance of sticking around. Fingers crossed!

Access into a whole new segment with the rev, combined with the tariffs (not corona lol) must have meant a ton of new challenges for Boosted. I always liked them and drive a mini since 2018. great analysis - I think OneWheel’s niche status and grip a on a relatively well heeled market (I mean how many people have an XR and a Pint) mean as long as they don’t go crazy with debt or dilute their equity too much they’re going to be around for awhile.... That moat around their market is pretty thick. I don’t think anyone else wants to invest the capital on the R&D to get around the patent monopoly on component arrangements FutureMotion has and then invest the capital on production and marketing. You’d need to take capture market share of Future’s small loyal niche market or expand that that market with a tester product.... that’s pretty hard on a product that has a big learning curve already.
    I actually think the future of OneWheel is to push for better combinations of weight and range as well as the UI experience of the board without diminishing its underlying ride experience. Imagine a more powerful motor to reduce pushback at speed (since it can balance more weight), introducing visual or audio cues for safety, more advanced batteries for longer range and power, ergonomics and lighter weight for portable.... I hope all the profits from us early adopters is going into the composite material, motor and component research for this next gen bad boy. It’ll help broaden the market incrementally with a safer and more accessible product as well as push a whole bunch of second hand boards into the market to widen the experience for those on the fence.
    Maybe a pint pro with some of these characteristics for city commuters and tricksters and an XR Pro for speed demons, trail riders, long haulers etc.

      It will only be a niche product till those are gone.

      @@mashedt8rs290 Agree...the only real safety issue that I think OneWheel under-addresses is the nose-dive issue. I feel like it would be less of an issue if NEW OWNERS fully understood the issue. OneWheel could certainly do a better job promoting or explaining the limitations of the board. Better yet, I would still like to see them create a mechanism which SLOWS the board, instead of the motor just cutting out. Yes, totally get it's explained in the manual but lets be honest...when you first buy the board that's were I feel 99.99% of those nose-dives issues come to light. Make that mistake just once and you've learned but it shouldn't take that mistake for awareness. They can do a better job communicating this flaw in their board. Love my board! Have had it now for nearly 2 years. One nose-dive (knock on wood) when I first got it...and several hundred miles later no issues and still loving the board.

    Their profit margin was slim. They weren't price gouging the purchasers, the product itself is costly, and that's why it couldn't sell.

Onewheel has stuck to a conservative game, kept doing what they are good at, and resisted the urge to constantly try to 1-up themselves…. Just staying as the “OG” product in the niche they created. I am further encouraged by your recent review of that other knockoff 1wheel…. It looks like imports are having a hard time replicating the smooth simplicity of of the onewheel. That’s good news for FM and those of us who love their product.

Encourage people to not only to ride responsibly as you always do but maybe even to set up group rides to pick up trash along a route or something. Some riders with bags and some riders with trash-grabbing--gripper-things all working together.
    When we ride in groups it brings even more attention. If people see us doing great things and riding responsibly then we can hopefully stave off banning of our devices.

    Hey Jimmy, there is a fourth option for venture capital returns... Dividends.
    If the business is profitable it shares its profits with the investors, in some cases this can be much more lucrative than selling the company early. Some founders even take these dividends and buy the outside investors out. It’s not always dire.

    The rev was to expensive (2000 eur incl tax and shipping) compared to xiaomi's offer (around 600 eur incl tax and shipping). The rev should have been the 1400-ish incl shipping and tax in Europe, because the scooter is twice as good so you pay the premium. And you would need a rev light for 999 or something. But this was just way to expensive.

    I was thinking the same thing🤔 my reasoning for thinking that Onewheel is having issues is do to the lack of response to at all. I asked if they would ever do a update with the app to let you know that you are exceeding the parameters of the board instead of just shutting off yes you are suppose to get pushback but sometimes that doesn't happen a simple phone notification through the app to the Apple watch would be simple. They have one for the battery why couldn't they just do this?

    • @hinterlight
      @hinterlight 4 года назад

      Slow response from OneWheel is a company tradition, they've been that way since their start. What I mean by that is that I would not look at "slow response" as a "soon going bankrupt" signal, it seems to be more of a "too busy on the assembly line to answer the phone" kind of signal.
