Till 50 he had only one wife Sayyidah Khadija who was 15 years elder to him and was twice widowed before. And for next 4 years his only wife was Sayyidah Sawda, also an aged lady. All, but one, of his wives were either widows or divorced. It was only at the age of 55 that four wives gathered in his marriage. John Bagot Glubb admits this fact in the following words; “It is, however, worthy to note that of all his wives, only Aisha was a virgin when he married her. Zainab bint Jahash was a divorced wife and all the rest were widows, some of them, it would seem, not particularly attractive. Moreover the Apostle had married Khadija when he was twenty-five and she was a widow considerably older than he was. He had remained completely faithful to her for twenty-four years until her death.” (The Life and Times of Muhammad p.237, pub. Stein And Day, New York, 1971) Further he says; “In Medina, Muhammad had less and less leisure time and must often have been mentally and physically exhausted, especially as he was in his fifties and latterly over sixty. The assumption that he was a sensualist because he had eleven wives when he died at the age of sixty-two is therefore not absolutely a foregone conclusion, as many have assumed. This is particularly so in view of the fact that he had only one wife until he was fifty.” (p.239) All this belies the notion that the Last Prophet of Islam (PBUH) married multiple time for of his physical desires. All his marriages had great wisdom behind them. His plural marriages were to practically show all sorts of permissible marriages in Islam and had extra-ordinary political benefits for the nascent Muslim community.

When girls reached puberty (and maturity) they were no longer considered girls but women who could marry have children and raise a family. That was the cultural norm for many civilizations of the ancient world, including 7th century Arabia. Today we would not allow this type of marriage because it is taboo and against the law in most countries. But not too long ago in this very country many states in America the age for marriage differed, in some states a girl can get married at the age of 16, 14, 12 with their parents consent. So it's not the case of a dirty old man married to a young girl, not at all, this was the norm for many people in past. Mary (RA) the mother of Jesus (PBUH) according to non Muslim scholars she was at the age of 11 or 12 when she had given birth to him, and Joseph her husband was over 90! But that completely accepted

The example of Muhammad (pbuh) was the institution of marriage, not Aisha's (RA) age. As far as that Hadith goes you have a misunderstanding of it. Abu Barka (RA) had nothing against Muhammad (pbuh) marring his daughter. the phrase, "but your my brother" is taken out of context by many islamophobes. They never look at what Muhammad's (pbuh) response was, he said "your my brother in faith, and your daughter is appropriate for me to marry," meaning that they're not blood related, because if they were then Abu Barka (RA) would be his literal brother and Aisha (RA) would his niece and of course this would be forbidden. But no matter what you explain to people someone always wants to find some fault within the aspect of Muhammad's (pbuh) life, my advice to you would be to visit a local mosque in your area, talk or establish a dilouge with the Muslims there to get definite answers to your questions.

@Winston Grettum Prophet Muhammad pbuh did not marry more women out of his physical desires for he had only one wife even till the age of 54. Till 50 he had only one wife Sayyidah Khadija who was 15 years elder to him and was twice widowed before. And for next 4 years his only wife was Sayyidah Sawda, also an aged lady. All, but one, of his wives were either widows or divorced. It was only at the age of 55 that four wives gathered in his marriage.
John Bagot Glubb admits this fact in the following words;
“It is, however, worthy to note that of all his wives, only Aisha was a virgin when he married her. Zainab bint Jahash was a divorced wife and all the rest were widows, some of them, it would seem, not particularly attractive. Moreover the Apostle had married Khadija when he was twenty-five and she was a widow considerably older than he was. He had remained completely faithful to her for twenty-four years until her death.” (The Life and Times of Muhammad p.237, pub. Stein And Day, New York, 1971)
Further he says;
“In Medina, Muhammad had less and less leisure time and must often have been mentally and physically exhausted, especially as he was in his fifties and latterly over sixty. These are not the circumstances under which men are interested in the indulgence of extreme sexuality.
The assumption that he was a sensualist because he had eleven wives when he died at the age of sixty-two is therefore not absolutely a foregone conclusion, as many have assumed. This is particularly so in view of the fact that he had only one wife until he was fifty.” (p.239)
All this belies the notion that the Last Prophet of Islam (PBUH) married multiple time for of his physical desires.
All his marriages had great wisdom behind them. His plural marriages were to practically show all sorts of permissible marriages in Islam and had extra-ordinary political benefits for the nascent Muslim community.

The consent for marriage in the ancient world was through puberty, females and males matured faster according to region, climate and culture. When girls reached puberty (and maturity) they were no longer considered girls but women who could marry have children and raise a family. That was the cultural norm for many civilizations of the ancient world, including 7th century Arabia. Today we would not allow this type of marriage because it is taboo and against the law in most countries. But not too long ago in this very country many states in America the age for marriage differed, in some states a girl can get married at the age of 16, 14, 12 with their parents consent.
So it's not the case of a dirty old man married to a young girl, not at all, this was the norm for many people in past. Mary (RA) the mother of Jesus (PBUH) according to non Muslim scholars she was at the age of 11 or 12 when she had given birth to him, and Joseph her husband was over 90! But that completely accepted

The example of Muhammad (pbuh) was the institution of marriage, not Aisha's (RA) age. Today it is socially taboo to marry anyone that young in today's world, that was then, so Muhammad (pbuh) did nothing wrong when he married Aisha (RA). As far as that Hadith goes you have a misunderstanding of it. Abu Barka (RA) had nothing against Muhammad (pbuh) marring his daughter. the phrase, "but your my brother" is taken out of context by many islamophobes. They never look at what Muhammad's (pbuh) response was, he said "your my brother in faith, and your daughter is appropriate for me to marry," meaning that they're not blood related, because if they were then Abu Barka (RA) would be his literal brother and Aisha (RA) would his niece and of course this would be forbidden.
But no matter what you explain to people someone always wants to find some fault within the aspect of Muhammad's (pbuh) life, my advice to you would be to visit a local mosque in your area, talk or establish a dilouge with the Muslims there to get definite answers to your questions.
