The way images from this are forever burned into my very soul, the depths of my bones... and so few that can relate. Wild seeing this again! Watched it constantly in the early 90s
seriously. we had this recorded on VHS, and I watched it ALL THE TIME as a kid. this IS the velveteen rabbit to me, and nobody has any clue wtf it is. but every scene, ever shot is past of my DNA, watching it is so strange, and brings up so many emotions. I'm pretty sure I was watching this even before I was forming memories that I can recall. it's such a terrible production but it's SO important to me.
Thanks for posting this! I played the part of the Little Boy in this production, back in 1984. I have a VHS and Laserdisc copy. The VHS is pretty beat up, and I haven't seen the Laserdisc yet. I'd love to get it copied to a digital file.
Oh i love this still even as a 36 year old!! This is the only "velventine rabbit" i ever knew as a child! Thank you for bringing back fond memories of a long forgotten classic!!
I’m almost 40 but every time I see this movie and read the book I blubber like a newborn baby. It’s so sweet and tender and reminds me of my childhood.
Remember watching this when I was a little girl I was born in 1987 till this day it still brings back memories of when I was a kid I wish they'd make it into a DVD that way I could share it was my children
you're very welcome! with all the other super rare things you can find on youtube nowadays, I was surprised no one else had ever put this up. glad I get to share my copy with the world!
Thanks for posting this... I've tried to find it all over the place! I've had one of the songs stuck in my head all week & decided to look again on youtube... and lo and behold! Here it is. :-)
This was my favorite movie as a kid! I watched it so much, my vhs tape broke. I was so upset. Since it was before internet shopping was really a thing, I was never able to buy it again. I was so upset!
That scene where she's crying in the trash pile and says "Even if this is how it all ends, I'm happy" has stayed with me for the 30+ years since I last watched this as a kid.
I remember finding this VHS tape on my family's movie rack one day and being a young teen I was thinking "I'll watch this and laugh at it maybe." Once it got into the story a bit I realized wow... this is deep. I actually love this story. So happy this is on youtube, thanks!
The showstopper "If You Believe In Make-Believe," sung beautifully by Marie Osmond is still beautiful. Other details? I don't know. I suppose the face with the rabbit/prop for little boy's scenes is well-made.
The boy has scarlet fever, a disease mostly kids get. This story was written in 1922 and back then, scarlet fever wasn't as easy to treat as it is today. I don't think antibiotics were invented for it until 1924. It used to be a major cause of death which is why the boy's family is so worried.

Mr. Sherman, can't say how neat it is to have the guy who made this thing happen actually comment on my video! I watched Tin Soldier equally as much as this one and I do have a digital file of it that I keep meaning to upload, so keep an eye out for it soon. I also had a copy of Petronella but it unfortunately got lost over time. Also, trying to figure out how to personally message you to talk more about this series! Would love to chat with you. Please PM me if there's a way!
Hey, thank you SO much for posting this, Zachary. I created this series and wrote and produced these for the brand new Disney Channel - way back when. It holds a special place in my heart, too. I got the chance to collaborate with my Dad and Uncle, The Sherman Brothers. I only have this on Beta and VHS - so thanks so much for posting it. Do you have any of the others you could post? "The Steadfast Tin Soldier," "Ferdinand" or "Petronella"? I would love to share these all with my friends.
They were going to do something like this for Raggedy Ann and Andy: A Musical Adventure when the toys came to life until they decided to just stick to animation.
the only other one I still have is Steadfast Tin Soldier, but the actual creator of this series, Jeff Sherman, uploaded it before I could! check it out! The Steadfast Tin Soldier - The Enchanted Musical Playhouse
There were some cartoons that came on after this movie after this movie. Can anyone help me with that? I think....THINK...that one was called "One Sweet Note" or something like that.
David Thompson Wow I've been looking for it for years... I can't remember any details about it though. I just remember there were several wizard, and they each had different color cloaks(?). It's possible I'm thinking of something else, because I also had the old Narnia cartoon, and it's possible the cartoon I'm thinking of was on after that movie. I'm hoping this info can jog someone's memory...
I've been looking for that too. There's one scene I remember where (I think it was a witch or evil person) who had to eat a broom and put salt and pepper on the broom bristles and I thought it looked tasty.

+Alexander Edward Pytko That was the same for me. Yet I haven't seen it since then.
I LOVE this movie. I watched it all the time as a kid. I now sing the songs to my baby.

Cool, I've been looking for this off and on for years. It used to make me feel guilty for not playing with some of my toys enough.
