  • Here we see two trains in the early morning light of November 4, 1990 at Walong, the Tehachapi Loop. The first train is a Southern Pacific heavy mixed freight manifest led by SD45R 7541 with a total of 6 heavy SD units in the head end consist, and another 6 units as mid-train helpers - typical of the massive heavy freight trains SP used to routinely run through Tehachapi. We then witness a Santa Fe stack train led by GP40X 3806, a rather unique unit, on the point. There is a single F45 on the rear end used as a helper, the 5975. These two trains were seen within the first 10 to 15 minutes of arriving at the Loop, a great way to start a day of railfanning!

Thank you for watching and for taking the time to comment! Knowing what I know now, I would have done far more video than still photography

You have the greatest videos! SP was my favorite railroad in this area with their roaring earth shaking grimy tunnel motors and mid train helpers but both the SP and SF in my opinion will never be matched. Trains nowadays in this area are rarely as exciting as they were 30 yrs ago. It's unfortunate we'll never get to hear those EMD 645s roaring up around the loop again. Keep up the good work and Thanks for sharing!
Edit: I love that shot of the moon at 3:48 with the faint sound of the DPUs in the background by the way! That was pretty cool!

I like the vintage video. I noticed that graphiti hadn't been invented yet since none of the cars had any, and that they regularly used four axle locomotives on long haul trains, which they don't do today. And that each of today's ES44AC loco's have twice the tractive effort of the SD40's and thus they can use 4+2 units instead of 6+6.

Unfortunately our society has deteriorated in recent years. Lawlessness is now accepted. Very sad really. Thank you for your comment and for taking the time to watch

Awesome stuff. Really enjoying all your Tehachapi videos.
At about 6:30 there's a former Flexi-Van car (converted to carry containers) in Trailer Train scheme.
