Cziffra and Volodos are at the top of this group of pianists because they don't sacrifice musicality even in the most difficult passages. To be able to do that at the incredible speed they are doing it is a sign of complete mastery of all technical challenges. Yes, Martha plays those octaves at superhuman speeds but they sound mechanical and she barely has any control over the tone quality.
Cziffra and Volodos are my favourites from this list, I also recommend including various other pianists like Katsaris (Beethoven/Liszt symphony #9, mvt.4), Hamelin (Alkan solo piano concerto) etc. And Volodos' octave section in the Funerailees is just lit!
There absolutely isn’t THE one with most technique! Lang Lang’ Don Juan is difficult to match, but I doubt he could play Liszt’s 6th rhapsody like Argerich, or the Grand Galop Chromatique like Cziffra (who cheats, btw). Theses here are absolute technique gods and there are several more!
Marc Andre Hamelin=THE CYBORG HUMAN MACHINE ROBOT KING PIANIST EVER!! THE GREATEST BEST PIANISTS ARE REALLY=ARTUR RUBINSTEIN ( THE GOD!) GRIGORY SOKOLOV ( THE TITAN OF THE PIANO! THE GIANT OF THE PIANO!!) EMIL GILELS ( THE KING OF ALL THE PIANISTS!) WILHELM KEMPFF ( THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PIANO SOUND EVER!) SVIATOSLAV RICHTER MIKHAIL PLETNEV ( THE MOST POWERFUL EVER!)! RADU LUPU ( THE MOST COLORFUL PIANO SOUND EVER) VLADIMIR ASHKENAZY ( THE MOST COLORFUL VOLCANIC PIANO SOUND EVER)! ALEXEI LUBIMOV ( THE GENIUS NO 1) MAURIZIO POLLINI ( THE GENIUS NO 2). SOLOMON CUTNER ( THE PERFECT STRUCTURE OF MUSIC) MARIA GRINBERG NATALIA TRULL ROSA TAMARKINA DIMITRI BASHKIROV ( MENDELSSOHN PIANO CONCERTO NO 1 BY BASHKIROV THE BEST BEAUTIFUL PIANO SOUND EVER)
Once again on youtube, people with no clue what technique means give wrong rankings. Hamelin is good, nothing more. Volodos : flawless, the best as now. Lang Lang : totally intuitive technique, sometimes can make miracles. Argerich : flawless, as long as she plays her repertoire, which means nothing new since she was 40.
+billentyu007 Above and beyond. One thing all these magnificent human beings have in common, including us where no one is ahead of the other or vice versa in any way shape or form, we are human, we learn by deliberate practice, and we ultimately do have our maximum human potential. But I concur above anyone else...Cziffra, that man was on a whole different magnitude of a level that was just above and beyond anything else anyone has ever seen and heard live or heard through recording technology which I am so blessed and thankful that we have. He was Liszt.
OMG, so amazing to watch! xD! Thank you for sharing! I didn't know Economou, I guess I had watched a video of him, but I just forgot him...he's amazing! About Lang Lang, he can play extremely difficult pieces, but his technique can't be compared to the others. I would choose Kissin playing Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody No.12 or Marc Andre Hamelin playing some Alkan =P
L. Lang 1: 0:00 A. Volodos 1: 0:36 L. Lang 2: 1:04 A. Volodos 2: 1:43 N. Economou 1: 2:09 M. Argerich 1: 2:41 N. Economou 2: 3:25 G. Cziffra 1: 4:27 N. Economou 3: 4:46 G. Cziffra 2: 5:05
Volodos is UNREACHABLE. Even Cziffra cannot be compared to him. Listen to the Flight Of Bumblebee. Cziffra is making a lot of efforts while playing it. Volodos is playing it like a piece from musical school.
cziffra..... phenom pianists all!!!. this whole "better" thing , as if one is talking about sports teams is totally missing the whole point. and you know what debussy said about critics, right?
It's amazing how people hear differently. To these ears Martha Argerich maintains clarity and musicality even in the most demanding passages and never goes through her tone, loses control or makes an ugly or raw sound. Cziffra's playing is just abominable, tasteless and empty. Volodos is a master of colour and pedal, so that even when he is laying tone on with a roller, he carries you with him through sheer conviction, and his virtuosity and musicality somehow temper his excesses. Economou was very good, though I don't think he's in the same class as MA or AV. The less said about Lang Lang, the better.
Commendatore, Adam! I agree with your assessments 98%. Volodos has long been my pianistic 'Vit. B' boost when I am in the mood for just sheer bombastic technique with *style*. Cziffra is otherworldly in his magical , phenomenal wizardry, but he sometimes lacks 'style'. [Our 21st Century Liszt] Argerich's technique is an "ear-jolter" in so many works, e.g., the Liszt Sonata, the Ravel G Major concerto, and just about *anything* that has extensive Fingerfertigkeit. IF there was such a thing as a "finger' contest" in pianism, Argericbh would surely be among the top of the list, if not #1. [The only one who I think would 'give her a run' would be Cziffra, maybe Volodos..
Yes, bang bang. His monkey on crack on a piano bench is so tiresome. His playing is loud with little finesse. He has the technique down but not the art.
Extraordinary techniques. But yes it does not mean 'the fast = super technique'. Please listen Chopin op 10 no 2 etude for example it sounds easy but only few pianists can play in a crazy tempo.....
I like the hands closup Cziffra version. The title was "Technique" which has nothing to do with artistic content. What is impressive about Cziffra are the bursst of impossible speed beyond the Galop pace. And they appear to be masterful bursts near no limit. But his niche is Liszt and not Chopin. Cziffra has the impossible combination of speed AND strength. Horowitz was known for his strength too - like when he'd play he pianos in the Steinway basement.
pianosenzanima kissin has brilliant technique yes. But saying his technique is superior let alone much superior is just outrageous. Kissin has fantastic finger independence and touch, but he is not in the calibur of cziffra, horriwitz, or even hamelin. Let’s not even mention liszt or alkan
Is sheer technical virtuosity what makes the best pianists? I don't think so. Lang Lang's Rachmaninoff is appalling though he plays all the notes. And I would never buy any of these pianists Beethoven, Bach or Schubert - Cziffra excepted.
This video seems to me to show only how little musical interest there is in five solid minutes of nothing but the loudest and fastest bits of great piano pieces.
Cziffra and Argerich rule, they are geniuses, rest are typists, clowns and noise ;-).. Hamelin is an amazing virtuoso, but no genius.. Richter, Horowitz and Daniil are real pianists.. (even if Argerich is becoming also).. all IMO of course ;-)
You people are mindless drones who flock at the idea that any music lang lang touches is ruined under his interpretation. I'm not a fan of Lang Lang and I will admit Lang Lang is really inconsistent with his interpretations but how about you find me the best interpretation for reminiscences de Don Juan for me, I would argue Lang Lang interpreted it the best.
"I would argue Lang Lang interpreted it the best." You would lose the argument at that. I wholeheartedly suggest to you to listen to Simon Barere, and Grigory Ginzburg's performances.
Lang lang and volodos expecially only Great noise i would Save My ears from this terrible noise i would attend Concert of these pianists only if tou give me 1000 € not less..Liszt and his descendants revoving in the grave
Interesting! Apart from the fact that I generally don't like all the Asian musicians, because at best they are just imitators, Lang Lang does pretty badly here!
in my point of view, Liszt is the winner
김지수 totally agree
Who cares about your point of view?!😀
andrew kennaugh who cares about your comment 😄
Sank😂😂😂
Karl Wang who care about you?
*it was Cziffra...and the others.*
They are all incredibly talented in their own special way! And Liszt was a masochist.
Cziffra and Volodos are at the top of this group of pianists because they don't sacrifice musicality even in the most difficult passages. To be able to do that at the incredible speed they are doing it is a sign of complete mastery of all technical challenges. I totally agree about that.

Indeed
this liszt
In my opinion, Marc-André Hamelin is by far the most technical pianist ive ever listen to.
Hamelin has a supreme technique but he never draws attention to it.
Hamelins technique is effortless, clean, crisp and unrivaled. He is spectacular.

I agree....
Yes, he is, though the others are of course phenomenal. The Mephisto Waltz, incidentally, sounds a lot harder than it is.
Music is all about sound, even in the trickiest passages - here I like the sound of Volodos most.
ALL PLAYS LISZT,AMAZING LEGEND

medviation I love this statement
Love how all the pieces are made by liszt
Some of these edits missing the hands is almost as painful as to me as when people clap between movements
Cziffra, only Cziffra
This video is incomplete without Volodos Turkish March Octave Barrage Ultimate
That bit near the ending was so hard even Yuja Wang had to turn it into arpeggios.
In one word: Liszt.
Volodos is UNREACHABLE. Even Cziffra cannot be compared to him. Listen to the Flight Of Bumblebee. Cziffra is making a lot of efforts while playing it. Volodos is playing it like a piece from musical school.
Cziffra was improvising
Cziffra was improvising, and the score that he published is an easier version than what he played
Katsaris is at that level too
¡Grande Argerich!...
Volodos, the best actually!
cziffra..... phenom pianists all!!!. this whole "better" thing , as if one is talking about sports teams is totally missing the whole point. and you know what debussy said about critics, right?

By far
et Kissin ? et Richter ? et Hamelin ? et Berezovsky ? et Trifonov ? etc. !!!
Kissin?!?!?!... Who is Kissin?!... 😁
Try John Ogdon better than all those youve mentioned. ;) MUCH better and superior technique that people could only dream of.
pianosenzanima kissin has brilliant technique yes. But saying his technique is superior let alone much superior is just outrageous. Kissin has fantastic finger independence and touch, but he is not in the calibur of cziffra, horriwitz, or even hamelin. Let’s not even mention liszt or alkan

amazing :)

There is a recording here on YT of Volodos doing Beethoven and it is quite good.
Volodos plays Schubert incredibly, as well as some Bach and Beethoven. He is in my opinion the greatest living pianist
all my students :D
Marc Andre Hamelin, enough said.
Katsairs and Hamelin are at that level of technique too
This video seems to me to show only how little musical interest there is in five solid minutes of nothing but the loudest and fastest bits of great piano pieces.
IMPERDONABLE QUE NO ESTÉ INCLUIDA EN ESTE SELECTO GRUPO DE VIRTUOSOS A YUJA WANG,LA MEJOR .
Argerich is undoubtedly the best pianist of All Time ,,,,
I totally agree with you! ;)
No
Osito Arabe ....after Cziffra ( she recognized herself...)
SELMER1947 Terence Judd ? He is an alien who died to young .
Osito Arabe And FRIEDRICH GULDA?...
au fait
existe-t'il une technique purement
et une autre purement masculine (ou "virile")
une telle sélection est vaine. Il en manque tant ....quid de Katsaris? de Richter?d' Horowitz? de Hough? de hamelin?
Horowitz ? Rachmaninoff ? ART TATUM??
And Rubinstein?
Qafar Quluzade one of the greatest pianist of the 20th century - he was a jazz pianist.. one of a kind.
Qafar Quluzade ?
why are all the pieces by liszt
by the way liszt is my fav composer
Weissenberg
lots of lang lang's haters, huh?
Lang lang cute face
Do they have their own compositions?
+Amen Vasquez volodos and cziffra only
+diego P Economou too
wow
Why is lang lang in this? To show how it's not done? I need two paper bags and industrial strength ear muffs for his crap.
Economou is "noise"?! you don't know what you're talking about !
Can’t cope with Lang Lang’s totally stupid facial expressions - Cziffra and Volodos simply play the music without the histrionics
Volodos makes weird faces too
Lang lang honestly has horrible technique. He has a lot of skill....
No, just no.
Lang Lang is again... Horrible! What a bad taste
You people are mindless drones who flock at the idea that any music lang lang touches is ruined under his interpretation. I'm not a fan of Lang Lang and I will admit Lang Lang is really inconsistent with his interpretations but how about you find me the best interpretation for reminiscences de Don Juan for me, I would argue Lang Lang interpreted it the best.
stuck up idiot lets see you play better!
MystifiedFlash. Lang Lang is nice with this peice, but I think that Okada is the best. Give it a try :)
"I would argue Lang Lang interpreted it the best." You would lose the argument at that. I wholeheartedly suggest to you to listen to Simon Barere, and Grigory Ginzburg's performances.
I didn't' know who was Simon Barere. I'm very thankful, his rendition on reminiscences of Don Juan is outstanding!!
If Lang Lang makes any more constipated faces I will puke!
