If you're watching this and it's not working for you, that's because you're using VMware workstation 15, the current version. Using VMware workstation player 14 with VIX 1.17 will work. You have to navigate the vmware website to find the version 14 (its buried, but its there) and version 1.17. THEN if you're using windows 10, it'll try to tell you that you cannot use that app, so then you need to turn off windows program compatibility by shutting down the service, then reboot, and then rename the .exe for vmware player 14 (I googled instructions on how to do this, it's not hard) THEN...well, I still didn't get vmrun to ever work, so I just manually opened vmware player 14...not a huge deal to me. USING VMWARE PLAYER 15 IS NOT CURRENTLY RECOMMENDED, I found all this info on the GNS3 forums. wrmem.net/index.php/2016/03/22/gns3-vm-and-vmware-workstation-12-player-could-not-find-the-default-vm-directory/ gns3.com/community/discussion/gns3-doesn-t-work-on-vmware-play that is, as of this current date 11/10/2019. I also can't think of a different workaround for anyone using Intel, but AMD users can just use Virtual Box as it now supports nested virtualization for AMD processors (apparently doesn't work with Intel yet?)

If you get this errorr : "Virtualized AMD-V/RVI is not supported, then open Win Powershell (as administrator) type: bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off if problem presist then win + r > optionalfeatures and remove "Windows Subsystem for Linux". That worked for me ! *don't forget to reboot

I had issues to get the vm LED go green on me. I spent hours reading about it on the gns3 community but could not get it to turn on green. I ended up uninstalling and starting fresh. The only thing I changed was after installing the GUI, I enable the gns3vm before downloading the GNS3 VM and it worked. Don't know why but I am thankful for this video. If you get a chance you may want to address that issues. I think lots of folks run into it. Regards Ben

In case you do everything explained here and it still does not work, then you need to disable the hyperV virtualization setting. Since Windows prioritizes the hyperV over VMware and VBox.

I just notice it says on the error you posted "C:\Users\Patryk Lewandowski\Documents\Virtual Machines\GNS3 VM1\GNS3 VM1.vmx" as I know the folder and vmdk name should only be "GNS3 VM". You can check this under Edit->Preferences->GNS3 VM. Under VM Name it should show GNS3 VM.
Hey David, I stumbled across your videos because I've been looking for help. I followed your steps here, and I get an error stating that my eth0 isn't connected. I can fix that by manually removing the comments in the network file, but after that my VM is always greyed out and not green within the GUI. Any help would be appreciated!

That is a clear and a fantastic tutorial, Dave. Here is my question, my intel doesn't support vt-x (advanced virtualization technology) but VT-only ( I enabled it in my BIOS). So unless I start GNS3 VM manually without vt-x and connect it with GUI, it won't start by default from GUI because the default startup requires VT-x to be enabled which I don't have on my PC. I tried to install net devices, it says KVM is not available. Is there any solution?

Was having this error too, my workaround was opening the Vmware Workstation and editing the GNS3 Virtual Machine disabling the "Virtualized Intel VT-x/EPT" feature.
HI, I had this issue in win11, turning off memory core isolation in device security fixed it for me. I don't personally like turning off security features in my machine but only that seems to be a workaround for it for now at least if you are on win 11

The answer is: i try to use different servers with wmware workstation, but gns3 see only local installaton of wmware and VMs on it. Whenever I attempt to import GNS3 VM into VMware, I can not locate the file, but GNS3 is downloaded on my device. Does this mean the file is potentially corrupt? Should I delete and redownload?
I had an issue with installation where my Hper-V was detected as enabled by VMware although it wasn't. the issue with VMware Workstation Pro was resolved by addressing the Core Isolation/Memory Integrity setting in Windows Security. That feature can indeed conflict with virtualization software by reserving the hardware virtualization capabilities for security purposes, which can prevent other virtualization platforms from accessing them.
After (5) installs and re-installs of GNS3. It worked. Whew! 04-18-21 Early afternoon. Not working. Does not work... GNS3 out of the box is a difficult puppy! I've been trying since 2015 to find a reasonable path to work with GNS3 and there is always something. Is just mind boggling that in 2021 GNS is still working with a 90's setup path. Gosh!

I’m running this on a surface pro 4. The vm did not load initially. Error: “virtualized intel by-c/EPT, is not supported on this platform” I had to disable this in the VM settings. And I also needed to uncheck “Hyper visor “ in windows 10. This seems to have fixed the problem.
I have installed the VMware workstation player 16 and downloaded GNS3 VM, both GNS3 and GNS3 VN are at the same version 2.2.21 but for any reason from GNS3, it doesn't start only my local server (my laptop). David excuse me, I followed the steps you gave in the video, but I don't know what is really going on and what is causing this behavior: after installing and integrating gns3 vm with gns3 gui, I see that when I run my gns3 application, gns3 vm also starts correctly but the gns3 gui control panel only identifies my local server which turns green but not my GNS3 VM. Consequence GNS3 Gui still works on my local server (i.e. my physical host) without the Gns3 Vm, but I want to resolve this issue to now run my topologies on the virtual server installed on vmware. I have an issue when I use Gns3 2.2.9 and VMware Workstation Pro 10.5.6. Gn3 GUI can not connect to the VMware I see that 2.2.10 is released. So I'm going to try it.
I have to say I'm not a fan of the Solarwinds additions in GNS3 now pushes during an install. Mandatory email address for info, then another suggestion at the end. Neither of which is even required for the actual install to work. Solarwinds sales reps have called me on my own phone, constantly emailed me they're very aggressive. I've learned to give fake phone numbers or email. Their products are good but they are ruining their reputation by being so aggressive. edit: I see they bought GNS3 in 2016....urgh

Good thing I found a _very_ cheap copy.
I've follow all the steps, and the light GNS3 VM stills in gray instead of green.

Whenever I attempt to import GNS3 VM into VMware, I can not locate the file, but GNS3 is downloaded on my device. Does this mean the file is potentially corrupt? Should I delete and redownload?
I had an issue with installation where my Hper-V was detected as enabled by VMware although it wasn't. the issue with VMware Workstation Pro was resolved by addressing the Core Isolation/Memory Integrity setting in Windows Security. That feature can indeed conflict with virtualization software by reserving the hardware virtualization capabilities for security purposes, which can prevent other virtualization platforms from accessing them.
After (5) installs and re-installs of GNS3. It worked. Whew!
04-18-21 Early afternoon. Not working. Does not work... GNS3 out of the box is a difficult puppy! I've been trying since 2015 to find a reasonable path to work with GNS3 and there is always something. Is just mind boggling that in 2021 GNS is still working with a 90's setup path. Gosh!
Thanks for explain but i have issus when i install gns3 appears message (error opening file for writing C:\program file\GNS3\VCRUNTIME140.dll) Abort. Retry. ignore when i select ignore complete install and doesn’t work ?

I am able to access those virtual appliances through vmware but unable to access them through browser in same network like "virtual machine-IP address" (for internet-facing appliance like vWLC) what could be the reason? I’m running this on a surface pro 4. The vm did not load initially.
Error: “virtualized intel by-c/EPT, is not supported on this platform”
I had to disable this in the VM settings. And I also needed to uncheck “Hyper visor “ in windows 10. This seems to have fixed the problem.
I have installed the VMware workstation player 16 and downloaded GNS3 VM, both GNS3 and GNS3 VN are at the same version 2.2.21 but for any reason from GNS3, it doesn't start only my local server (my laptop). I have chosen the GNS3 VM option to run appliances in a virtual machine as recommend, but the GNS3 VN doesn't t run (it is still halted on gray, while my laptop is green). Any t-shoot on this or I need to download the Vmware Workstation Pro?
Hello David - I have a question- there are two pop up I can't seem to get rif of.
1. the pop up with IP address, login in to SS.. I hit OK to that then the
2. the GNS3 Information, Channel keep poping up. I can't seem to close. Everytimr I hit OK.
it keep going to the cycle... I'm dont know how to make them go away.

David excuse me, I followed the steps you gave in the video, but I don't know what is really going on and what is causing this behavior:
after installing and integrating gns3 vm with gns3 gui, I see that when I run my gns3 application, gns3 vm also starts correctly but the gns3 gui control panel only identifies my local server which turns green but not my GNS3 VM.
Consequence GNS3 Gui still works on my local server (i.e. my physical host) without the Gns3 Vm, but I want to resolve this issue to now run my topologies on the virtual server installed on vmware.
Please help me solve this problem.

I have to say I'm not a fan of the Solarwinds additions in GNS3 now pushes during an install. Mandatory email address for info, then another suggestion at the end. Neither of which is even required for the actual install to work. Solarwinds sales reps have called me on my own phone, constantly emailed me they're very aggressive. I've learned to give fake phone numbers or email. Their products are good but they are ruining their reputation by being so aggressive. edit: I see they bought GNS3 in 2016....urgh

I have stop W10 firewall, but it the same, servers summary green, but interfaces doesn't connect each over, even 3 vpcs with a switch (ping work not all the time between each other) and if I ask a router to do dhcp, vpcs take dhcp of wmnet8 not the router.
What should I do ?
