In my early childhood I lived in Bristol, (that would be the 60's - 70's). I recall going out with my father seeing these areas particularly around Brent Knoll in Somerset. I remember well the motorways (M4 and M5) being built. I was too young to properly understand what was happening with this "improvement". The chaos and destruction of a way of life may of had benefit for some. Nowadays in old age I'm not so sure when I remember what was against what has become. It was fascinating to watch this, bought back so many memories.

It looks so lovely before the motorway cut through their I can only imagine how peaceful and quiet it was I drive through the country lanes that are still there to this day. And I look across and see that motorway and I wished it wasn't there I know we need motorways but it would be nice to go back

Wow! How brilliant to see this. This is my part of Somerset, and although I was born pre-motorway, I have no memory of this area before the M5. The footage captured of the countryside just before they start the works, shows exactly as I imagined it was.....unspoilt and beautiful. Thanks so much for posting.

@@TheWorldservice unfortunately I’m very limited in my choices of music for my videos as I have to be careful not to infringe copyright. RUclips do have a library of copyright free material I can use but so often when I’m editing these vintage cine films I think of an excellent piece that would be just perfect but I can’t use it

Britain before motorways, beautiful. Never mind how long it took to get anywhere, this was how I wish this country had stayed forever, including the population. Far too crowded now.

The UK is far less crowded and built on than most people would expect, take a look at this webpage from BBC news www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-41901297

Footage of the Dibble's Farm dig! Amazing! Thank you! But apart from that, the rest of the footage is great, too. Gordon Pratt was clearly had a keen eye and was a talented filmmaker. I would love to see more of his work.

Yes it was fascinating to see the remains being uncovered. Gordon had an eye for making interesting films. I have been fortunate to have his films which I am digitising. The family footage I am putting on DVD for his family but his footage of events and locations around Weston-super-Mare I’ve been posting on this channel.

IN 1975, WE DROVE DOWN THE A 38 , HEADING FOR CORNWALL, BUT JUST BEYOND TAUNTON, WE COULD SEE A HUGE STREAM OF TRAFFIC OVER TO THE LEFT, AT A STANDSTILL.AS WE BECAME TOO. IT LOOKED LIKE THEY WERE STUCK IN A MEADOW, IT WAS THE M5, THIS WAS THE END OF IT'S BUILD, AT THAT POINT, AND TRAFFIC WAS MERGING WITH THE A38. IT WAS TOTAL CHAOS, ALL THE WAY TO ST iVES, WE GOT THEIR AT 11 PM, IN THE DARK.

Fantastic footage. I remember the M62 being built. Destroyed our local park, it’s very sad. It’s strange how railways seem to enhance the landscape, whilst motorways are a real eyesore. Some awesome vintage vehicles though. Do you know what happened to the occupants of the burial site? It would be nice if you added some music to the film, which you can still do on RUclips. Anyway a great bit of history, thanks for sharing. All the best, Phil

Hi Phil, thanks for the comments, as I’ve added further films I have started adding music ( copyright free from RUclips) and now also trying to include some sound effects. I hope as I edit more films that I can improve on the finished quality as I’m learning as I go.
