Castle Howard, Vintage 1970s Home Movie Cinema Film
A day out to Castle Howard in Yorkshire back in the 1970s. Ticket prices were 80p for an adult and 40p for children, which certainly dates the film almost as much as seeing the fantastic cars from the time.

Back to the summer of 1966 and not England winning the World Cup but a lovely 8mm cine film home movie of a wedding, reception and finally the bride and groom driving off with everything hanging off the back of their car. I have identified the reception location as The Rising Sun, a restaurant on the A6187 near Hope and Bamford in the Peak District. It has now been demolished and replaced with ...

Another 8mm film that has come astray from its owner. This is a wedding in the 1970s and I've no idea of exact date or location. I would love to know where this film was taken! It shows new houses being built in the 1970s. Thank you for this. I wonder if the building at the very end is based in Nakuru.
Unfortunately I don't know. Many of these vintage cine films have no information written on the reel so it take lots of detective work to find things out
Ibiza 1972,is another I intend to upload (as well as Majorca 1973 I previously mentioned)
The best part of those garden parties (BBQs in North America) was kids could try some beer and wine. We also could sit and watch the grown ups act funny as they drank more alcohol. It was a great source of amusement for us. As a kid were were treated just like adults, if for only a little while.
A very classy bunch. The ladies wore gloves and hats and the men dressed in morning coats and top hats.
At 2:57. That's a nice Omega watch.
Certainly, a very nice leaving present
The good old day cant get them back play all day as kids great fun
As others have commented, the striking thing is how little has changed.! You can still have that wonderful seaside holiday in Lyme.
Great childhood memories,my parents had babbacombe cabs(21 petitor rd) up until 1988 and we moved to Sheffield to run a pub(all went downhill from there😢)
Glad your enjoyed the nostalgia
Wonderfully evocative of days gone by. Great memories for those families.
Glad you enjoyed it
The SS Oronsay was the ship we came over on from Australia in 1952. I was just 5 years old then and now live in Scottish Highlands.
No health & safety rules back then!
We went to Majorca in 1970 & 1973, I have some cine footage of the latter on a recently digitalised clip so intend to upload it to the channel
I look forward to seeing it
Great Quality !!
❤❤
1971 was the year I was born, thanks for sharing this. 👍😃
You're welcome
We had the exact same tree and electric fire surround. In fact I only recently got rid of the surround after my mum passed away. I kept the tree, even though it is 64 plus years old, it just holds to many memories of happy Christmases to get rid of. The holes in the wooden stem are slightly enlarged due to decades of pushing in the metal branches, so the branches sag downwards a little more than intended but apart from that still as good as the day my dad brought it back in the late fifties..
I'm glad the film has brought back so many happy memories
@ it truly did x
This film should be scanned. It appears to have been videos from a projected screen image hence the flickering.
Hi, yes this was a film I put on my channel when I first started and before I obtained a scanner. The quality of the films I post now are much improved even though the scanning equipment is quite basic.
@@DaveEldergillCineFilm- I presume you are Southend based. I have a lot of film starting in 1957 from my father which I have scanned. A cousin is also involved in local history as our family goes back 150+ years. One of our “family films” was a flight in New Zealand in 1962. The pilot and his passengers disappeared without trace about 3 weeks later. My parents film of our 1962 flight was rediscovered in 2021 and its importance recognised in NZ. It was posted on RUclips. That led to me being given so much NZ aviation history including the Erebus disaster of 1979 in Antarctica. So much useful information was given to me that I even wrote a book “Erebus and the Dragonfly” which has been printed in NZ and published 2 weeks ago. Sales are going well. The local connection - the missing (still) pilot and his passengers - the pilots Mother and Father lived just behind the Anne Boleyn in 1962. They were shown the original 8mm cine film and a load of trannies. One was printed and given to them. 40 years later, that same photo reappeared in NZ books on the mystery of the disappearance of the Dragonfly DH90 ZK-AFB. Google these and the name of Brian Chadwick and you will find my NZ film, and books.
Really enjoyed the m6 lancaster northbound always a pleasure
Happier days by far,,
Oh how I enjoyed this and at my age I remembered all the models very well I noted a Saab surely a rare sight when everyone had a British car , thanks for posting and one hurray for those standard 8 and super 8 film cameras.
Glad you enjoyed it
Glad you enjoyed watching it
Wonderful 😊
Thanks a lot 😊
Our nice days
I'm affraid Jane Austen Wings cafe and some hill side houses behind nearly ended up on the beach after a huge land slide early 1960's.I remember that area being closed off for years afterwards. No amusements back then.My first time at Lyme June 1965 age 6 months and still holidaying there today.❤
IN 1975, WE DROVE DOWN THE A 38 , HEADING FOR CORNWALL, BUT JUST BEYOND TAUNTON, WE COULD SEE A HUGE STREAM OF TRAFFIC OVER TO THE LEFT, AT A STANDSTILL.AS WE BECAME TOO. IT LOOKED LIKE THEY WERE STUCK IN A MEADOW, IT WAS THE M5, THIS WAS THE END OF IT'S BUILD, AT THAT POINT, AND TRAFFIC WAS MERGING WITH THE A38. IT WAS TOTAL CHAOS, ALL THE WAY TO ST iVES, WE GOT THEIR AT 11 PM, IN THE DARK.
Really nice...
Thanks a lot
Lovely footage. The ferry is the Caledonian Princess, which was purpose built for Stranraer to Larne in 1961. She then spent some time on other routes (mostly Fishguard to Rosslare) from about 1968, until she was transferred to the Channel Islands in 1975. She was transferred again to Dover in 1981, before retiring later that year and spending the next 27 years as a floating nightclub first in Newcastle, then Glasgow, then back to Newcastle. She was finally towed away for scrap in 2008.
Another cracking song.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it
What a fantastic nostalgic film. Thank you very much for posting. We visit Lyme Regis a lot living fairly nearby.
Glad you enjoyed it
@0:24 - What is that ? A caravan for Ronnie Corbett ?
Thanks for this. I live in this town and it has gone sadly downhill since those days.
Sorry to hear that, but I'm happy you enjoyed seeing the short glimpse into the past
Another interesting and enjoyable film. Thanks for uploading. I must say the whole scene looks *very* relaxed. A slower pace of life in general back then. Apologies for being a nitpicking, car-spotting anorak, but I can see a Ford Taunus TC3/Cortina Mark V (officially ‘Cortina 80') and a Mark 3 Escort. These were launched in 1979 and 1980 respectively.
Finding locations and exact dates for some of the films can be quite difficult, so many have no clues written on the reel or box. Keen eyed viewers really can help me be more exact. Google maps and street view are a great resource, in this film I was able to find the exact location (and post it to a French Facebook page for the town also!)
In my early childhood I lived in Bristol, (that would be the 60's - 70's). I recall going out with my father seeing these areas particularly around Brent Knoll in Somerset. I remember well the motorways (M4 and M5) being built. I was too young to properly understand what was happening with this "improvement". The chaos and destruction of a way of life may of had benefit for some. Nowadays in old age I'm not so sure when I remember what was against what has become. It was fascinating to watch this, bought back so many memories.
I'm glad you enjoyed watching the film
It is interesting to see the large number of USA brands Wills Wing and Bennett Delta Wing at that time. Great high quality footage from that early period is not so common. Thanks.
I'm guessing 1975-76
I've been told that this was 1976 and this is a link to a page with information about the event british-hang-gliding-history.com/bhga/pickering-1976.html
Like the ominous X files style music.
The music is from the RUclips copy-write free library and is called Future Glider by Brian Bolger
"Is that our phone I can hear ringing ? " "No." "Are you SURE ?" "Yeah - We ain't got a car phone !"
I’ll get you for this Rodney!
@0:22 - He he he ! Lookit those flares ! That bloke didn't need a hang-glider to fly , he just had to wait for the wind to blow in his direction !
For an amateur movie there are some pretty good shots here. The ‘British Hang Gliding History’ site has the programme for this event, which took place in May 1976.
Thanks for the info, I’ll take a look at that
Fantastic, was flying my paraglider there two days ago.
A nice change from weddings, and holidays in Spain..👍
It's a real treat when there is something other than weddings and holidays!
British life, British cars British values, sadly now all lost..
It's a golden days in Aden @ that time . thanks 4 this film
Could this be Pontefract or perhaps Knottingley, with a view out the window to Ferrybridge Power Station? It’s my best guess after a little detective work on the Internet, and assuming the ‘window scene’ is from the same town. You might want to check out a RUclips video entitled ‘The Air Up There - Pontefract’ for some drone footage. And if you think your film might be from that part of the world you could always contact the Pontefract and Castleford Express or the Wakefield Express.
Thanks for the information, I’ll check it out 👍
That eye-poppingly gaudy red couch looked like it had a major burned area on the end of the arm, probably from Aunt Martha's cigarettes.
Let's sit for a while, now let's get up and try to dance, now let's all sit again, now let's watch Aunt Martha smoke. And don't forget to try and look like you're having fun, after all, it is Christmas.
Hardly anyone there under the age of 50. That Christmas tree was very tacky, as was the rest of the room. To paraphrase an old MadTV skit regarding unattractive people, everyone looked like they were from K-Mart, the DMV or any of the Slavik countries.
Great memories...
Great footage. It looks like it’s from early on in the Seventies. I think that’s a Hillman Avenger at 0:18. If so, then the film can be no earlier than February 1970.
Thanks for the information, wouldn't be fantastic if I could re-unite this footage with the couple (if they are still with us?)
Aden is historical and this day is over OK I am in Aden living and Aden has a future with the President Aidaroos Alzubaidi and it will return better than before and we welcome anyone who visits Aden and works in Aden we make its tourists and the residents in it are crowns on our heads
used to work in the grand and the qweens back in the 60s ;)
I find these old films both fascinating and sad at the same time, especially the weddings, as many of these happy couples are no longer with us. These films capture a time in this country when everything was so much more relaxed and traditional. the couple viewing their new house on this building site are taking their life in their hands crossing that minefield of building materials and precariously stacked scaffold boards!
The films do seem to offer quite a unique and personal perspective on times gone by as opposed to more mainstream media from the time
