Horizontal vanes have been used in some SWATH style boats, positioned inboard near the forward end, and they work very well as long as the cross-hull is not hit so hard as happens in these conditions, and as long as the vane is in the "moving" water.
Amazing stable position with such high and steep waves. The SWATH concept works.
