- Mark Forbes discusses his photography series, "Collected Memories," which explores the idea of capturing memories and the role of photographs in preserving those memories.
He shares how the series started as a result of his organic and investigative approach to photography, where he explores everyday scenes and objects. Mark explains that he is drawn to scenes that evoke a sense of the human element, even without explicitly including people in the frame. He also discusses using medium-format film cameras and their impact on his photography process.
Mark's work resonates with viewers due to the relatable and nostalgic feel of his images, as well as the sense of familiarity and deja vu they evoke.
He also shares insights into his other projects and future plans, including a solo exhibition in Korea.

Thanks for the interview Tomasz & FRAMES - really great to chat with you, thanks for sharing my work.
Thank you so much once more for recording it with me, Mark.
the essence of a photograph is its stilling of life, our lives. we rush here and there, in a whirlwind of things and fads and pressing tasks, the photographer walks the tracks or films the commission and then performs the miracle of stoppage, of capture. thank you, Mark Forbes, for your ability to see what should be caught, and to catch it just right for us. a very fruitful discussion, and superior photographs of subdued color and bright sunlight and daily scenes. you are Great
Thanks for this introduction to Mark's work. Wonderful. And he's a Smoggie!!!!
🙏🙏🙏
Thanks so much for introducing me to Mark! His work resonates with me much as you describe Tomaz. Thank you!!
Wonderful!
Mark has been a muse of mine for quite a while. And interestingly, many photo books I have don't quite live up to the digital versions online in terms of quality of the image. But not Mark's. His book is so well produced, and the images so captivatingly real that it is the one that I reach for most often and hope someday to produce one that perhaps even touches his. So great to see this interview for greater context. Thanks, Tomasz!
Thank you, Daniel. Happy to hear you enjoyed it!
thank you both!
Our pleasure!
Fantastic interview really enjoyed Mark’s images. I would really love to order this book but unfortunately shipping is very high to the uk.
Thank you so much, Jason. Maybe try reaching out to Mark personally to ask if there is anything to be done about the shipping price.
Just ordered the book! Mark's approach/subject matter and mine are identical in regards to that incredible feeling when light, geometry, color etc. all align to provide a remarkably soul-satisfying moment that prompts the click of the shutter.
I began photography in the midst of a severe depression that very nearly took my life. To say it's a miracle to be alive is an understatement. I walked countless miles seeking out THESE kinds of shots. Each one I found helped to restore my mind and soul...one click at a time. It's very refreshing to discover someone like Mark who feels like a kindred spirit in the way we see, feel, and shoot. I'm very much looking forward to receiving the book. And THANK YOU, Tomasz, for all the tireless and remarkable work you do for the photography community!
Thank you so much, Michael 🙏🙏🙏
Hi Michael - thanks for your kinds words, and great to feel the commonality there with our approaches. Very glad that you've found similar benefits to photography that I have too.
Very nice Interview. Thank you Thomasz
Cheers Bas :)
Thank you so much for watching our conversation!!
Love Forbes’ photography. I love the colours and the lack of people. Waiting for a person to walk through a scene has become a cliche and I like how he avoids it.
Great thought, Henry. Thank you so much for leaving it here.
Thanks Henry - much appreciated.
I love the banality of Mark’s work! His work is a favorite genre of mine to photograph. Thanks for sharing Tomasz!
My pleasure!
Cheers Victor.
Mark's work really resonates with me because my own photography practice closely follows the kind of observations of the ordinary that he makes. Followed on flickr!
🙏🙏
Thank you :)
Wonderful. How the mundane becomes otherwise is fascinating.
🙏🙏🙏
Thanks Troy - agreed ;)
Great work! Love Mark’s images and will definitely be grabbing his book.
thanks Dan, cheers :)
What a great and inspiring presentation. Love the conversational style of the interview. Some brilliant images and interesting insights into context and composition. Well done!
Glad you enjoyed it, Rolf. Thank you!
Thanks Rolf - glad you found some insights in it.
Many thanks Tomasz for presenting Mark's images. So good to see an Aussie photographer doing amazing work. Congratulations to you both.
Thank you so much, Peter.
What a wonderful channel - content and context... 😊
Thank you so much!
Thanks :)
What an honest and unpretentious approach. Love this refreshing interview.
Thank you, Michael 🙏
Thanks Michael - really appreciate that comment :)
@@_markforbes_Cheers Mark, it was an absorbing interview and I really appreciated the way you reacted so "normally" to the questions. Also I have a rolleiflex 6x6 which I'm taking out of retirement so it was interesting to see which filmstock you've been using. Thanks again.
Mark's work is most inspiring to me, I also connected to it immediately. Thank you Mark and Tomasz.
Our pleasure!
Thanks Richard, glad to know you connected with it :)
Another great watch. Thanks.
Thanks so much for watching and for your kind comment.
Thanks Mike.
Marks work is amazing! Great interview!
🙏🙏
Just loved the work and the unity. These intimate discussions with the photographer and their work are exceptional. Thank you Tomasz!
Thank you so much, Don. So happy to hear you enjoy them.
Thank you Don.
Thank you very much for interviewing Mark, he is so inspiring!
I love that you asked the kind of questions I would like to ask him myself!
Just one technical question: do you know what kind of light meter he uses? The exposure is so perfect!
Thank you, Alex. I don’t know about his metering system. Make sure you reach out to him via his website.
Great interview. Thought-provoking.
Thank you, John.
excellent interview!

Great discussion, and absolutely LOVE the work. It takes a special eye to discern beauty in what most would find simply mundane.
Alan, thanks so much. Happy to hear you enjoyed it.
Cheers Alan.
Very much enjoyed this interview, as I’ve always wondered at the thinking and logistics behind @_markforbes_ work. Quite inspiring, and Mark’s work really resonates with me, given my own photographic pursuits and path from film to digital and now back to film.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks Jacques, yes, similar paths by the sound of it!
@@_markforbes_ Interestingly, I'd also been looking for many years for the right Rolleiflex at the right price. While I would have preferred the 3.5F, I found, very recently, a 3.5B at a shop near me for a very fair price and bought it. Really happy with the results so far, but I'll have to send it in eventually for a CLA for the slower shutter speeds (which I understand is a normal issue to have to deal with). One thing I know is that I felt immediately connected with the Rolleiflex. I'll still keep my eyes open for a 3.5F, though, but I'll keep that 3.5B as well.
@@jacquesgudefantastic - great pickup. Yes, always good to give them a CLA if things are not quite right. Enjoy! 😊
