Dealing With Tough Bosses & Co-Workers in HVAC/R

  • In today's live stream, we discuss strategies for Dealing With Tough Bosses & Co-Workers in HVAC/R work. We won't get along with everyone in our workplaces, but we can figure out how to communicate effectively without letting them wear us down.
If you work with negative people, let them be miserable by themselves. The best way to deal with them is to ignore them while you're working. Instead of focusing on shared complaining, try to focus on the common goal of getting work done. Moreover, you can avoid contributing to a negative environment by leaving work drama at work and home difficulties at home.
Anger issues are common in our trade. You can deal with others' anger issues by acknowledging the inappropriate behavior and understanding that you can't communicate productively when tempers are high. When you have to address the behavior, don't attack their character but be direct about how that person's anger affects your work relationship. In extreme cases, give them space and walk away. If YOU are an angry person at work, try to address the root cause of the anger and work through it. Put structures in place that prevent you from lashing out at other people.
Careless people are also everywhere in our trade. You can deal with inexperienced people by remembering how you were when you were at their career stage; you can empathize with them and give them the appropriate space or tools to develop. If the carelessness comes from distractions, such as their cell phone, try to address the distraction and reroute the careless person's attention to the job's mission.
Micromanager leaders who tend to get over-involved in projects can annoy their teams at best or stunt their development at worst. These leaders can improve their relationships with their team by setting clear objectives and giving their techs the room to develop.
Sarcasm, rudeness, and condescension are all undesirable traits in the workplace. If you work with someone who is too sarcastic or condescending for you, calmly set that boundary with them that they can agree to. For example, you'll likely want to draw a clear line regarding racist and sexist jokes. If you are sarcastic, rude, or condescending, try to focus on communicating in a way that accomplishes the mission.
Cliques and tribes will form in any workplace. However, they can be annoying and difficult to work with. Your goal is to develop as many allies and as few enemies as possible in the workplace. So, being kind whenever possible is the best way to avoid clique culture.
Nepotism is also a sad reality in some organizations, especially in a few family-owned ones. The best way to address it is to talk to a leader about it; be straightforward and express your desire to work for a merit-based organization. You don't want to be a part of a business that shows favoritism towards family members anyway.
Many of the worst leaders refuse to invest in training and education. The best way to deal with these leaders is to know what you need to learn. Then, you can communicate your needs with your leaders. A leader who ignores that type of request is probably not worth working for anyway.
Egomaniacs are a particularly annoying variety of co-workers or bosses. The best way to deal with egotistical co-workers is to talk to them with a couple of other people to provide some perspective. It is much harder to reform leaders' big egos; you must decide if that leader is worth working for or not.
Exaggeration and lying are also inappropriate at work. Those habits lead to poor training and misconceptions. When dealing with liars and exaggerators, feel free to ignore them or question their stories.
Dishonesty with customers is a serious flaw in the workplace. If you have dishonest co-workers, kindly try to convince them to do better. If your workplace is shady, the only solution is to work somewhere else.
Unwillingness to learn is also difficult to deal with. If someone has the potential to learn, help them learn how to "learn" by using similes and metaphors to build their mental models. Lazy co-workers and those who perform poor work also fall under this category. Again, try to help those co-workers learn to become comfortable with good, hard work by setting standards.
Overreactors can also cause discord in the workplace. Many overreactors care a lot about their work, so it isn't a completely horrible trait. The best thing you can do is deescalate the overreactor's emotions respectfully and show that you care about their concerns. If you're the overreactor, take a step back and observe the situation.

The more secure I am in myself, the less annoying people are. It's funny that way. Don't let anyone stop you from reaching your goals even if you have to jump ship or start your own company.

A trait I can't stand is poor communication. You ask a point blank question and you don't get a direct answer. Another is procrastination and a lack of focus. Another is dishonesty. Another is unreliability.

Just to share what works for me....especially because I'm a bit anxious to begin with. I realized that allowing someone to control your emotions is a God like power. Literally they are controlling the voice in your head that you hear non stop. When I'm in a neutral state I declare to myself who I trust and have earned those type powers....and I keep that list very short. If your not on the list I sincerely try not to allow my emotions react more than what is necessary for the matter at hand. Something about being aware of this before anything happens allows you to control your emotions with more discipline.

You may not yourself be a confrontational person or bully or anything like that, but their is always someone there that wants to annoy you, or is secretly jealous of you, or has Crab Mentality so avoiding these types of colleagues or bosses can be a bigger challenge than the job you do there.

I noticed that I got angry and irritated on the extreme when I would drink more caffeine. I know that might be silly sounding. But I found out that I was sensitive to caffeine and didn't even realize it. I thought I was just a redhead and it ran in my genes or something. After I chilled on the caffeine some I was almost a totally different person. Great video guys.

I'm new to the HVAC field, I switched from a culinary field to HVAC at 22 years old. I want to learn the trade and gain new skills to make my own HVAC business when I have master the skills needed for the trade. I've recently started the trade 2 months ago and the company I work for has placed me in different areas of the trade, Ductwork, installation, maintenance. and A lot of the guys I work with told me I wont go far in this trade and I will probably be fired after my 6 months of training is up and the company makes me do my own thing, and I don't get mad or upset I just smile and joke it off and tell them I'll make improvements but it gets to me time to time but I try to use it has motivation I've even found out they have told people in the office and they treat me different from other apprentice besides myself. They act has if I'm not in the room with them or in the morning they will say Moring or greet the other apprentices but when it comes down to me they act like I'm not there and ignore me I show up on time around 5:30 am every day since I started because I live the farthest away from the office and start time is at 8:00 I ask Questions all the times if I see something I Don't understand or something that's knew to me and when I ask a question they answer in a loud and angry tone of voice but I still stand firm and not let it get me down we all got to start somewhere in life.

I got the option for a new job a different company. The interview went well. The skills mentioned, work ethic, not a drinker or smoker, no drugs or criminal history here. So all the way until the end until the GM mentioned my hair. I've left the military a couple years ago, and started working for their competitors. At the same time I've started growing my hair, so essentially 2 years without a haircut (it's part of who I am and lifestyle) and the GM said I'd have to cut my hair due to aparece. I came in with it clean and tucked it in a bun. My work ethic and nearly 2 years of experience in the field doing rough in, wire, final, change-out (pack and splits), and ability to figure out on the field without having to call a manager every time an issue occurs shows that I'm a valued worker who is ready to add to the company's business. However I'm not really willing to cut my hair to collar length.
I understand that some people might see it with"traditional" eyes but they should judge me by the quality of my work and not hair length or aparece. Same as tattoos or beard used to be associated with circus employees (also associated with criminal back in the day) men with long hair is just a styling thing.
Please shine some light so u can make adequate decision here. Put my foot down to show I'm committed to my lifestyle and risk loosing it, cut some as a show I'm also committed to the job as a compromise, or just "bend *ver" and cut my hair and start with resentment on a new company?

    • @5822huron

In the end your "lifestyle " can prevent you from having a lifestyle. You are valuable but remember the prospective employer doesn't know you. A modest image will always be preferred over a standout. As you age and mature you will look back and wonder why you let a hairstyle influence you. Im prior military also, you are just being rebellious because you are free now. When you have kids and a wife,a hairstyle is a ridiculous thing to be in conflict over. My friend cut his dreads and his hvac career took off. More companies saw him and he fit a profession image. Don't confuse what is accepted today with what is preferred 🤔

  • @packrat76
    @packrat76 Год назад

One good thing about the HVAC field is the need for techs so companies have more of an incentive to treat their employees well. I know this is the real world and isn't always the case but it gives you more freedom to leave and go elsewhere. This is 90% the reason I'm now in school for HVAC. I currently work for a machine shop run by a complete narcissist. He's a glass half empty person and always seems to be to be able to find something to bitch about no matter how well you try to do your job. It's incredibly toxic and disheartening to work in an environment like this. Misery is a good driver for change and schooling will take time as I'm only part time but I look forward to my last days here in the future.

Which In the end makes trouble shooting a much longer process

It'll vary depending on what part of the trade you are in (installs, service, controls, etc.). And how good of a company you work for. A good family orientated company will make accommodations for their workers. Some just don't plain care about their workers though and work them to death. It's been normalized in this industry, and I've been told so many times by the old timers not to let work interfere with your personal life. Take the time to be around for your kids, they grow up fast and you will regret it in the future for not being there for special occasions. If your not specifically on call I would only work overtime on a case by case basis and if I need/want to do it. Just remember to budget for the slow months though...
