  • In this video I discuss my thoughts about reviews on Discogs... are they trustworthy or should we take them with a grain of salt? I also show and discuss sentimental records I found at the St. Augustine Vinyl Record Fair. Bands such as U2, the Velvet Underground, Talking Heads, Alice Cooper, and more are discussed.

    This was a great video. The song that affects me is The Living Years by Mike +the Mechanics. Ever since my father passed in 2011, I can't hear that song. It'll come on in a grocery store and I'll have to stop what I'm doing and leave because the emotional reaction I have isn't controllable.

    It was an honor to meet you, Melinda, and thank you for the kind words! I still agree about the mediocrity of the sound quality of most U2 on vinyl. Instead of buying a record, I got the U2 Monopoly game instead. It's pretty impossible to play though, since the streets have no names. 🤪

    Great video, Melinda. My emotional song is "Dream A Little Dream of Me" by Cass Elliot. It was my mother's favorite song and I always think about her when I hear it. She passed in July 2023 just 5 days short of her 101st birthday, so it's hard to hear now.

    Hi Melinda, I rarely trust most reviews by reviewers. The only reviews I trust are my own or reviews by people who i trust. Just about everyone has a sentimental song that gets them. Mine is Mike and the Mechanics "Living Years" because my father and i always had WW3 and 4 every time we were together. Great video as per usual.

    • @lostandfoundsounds
      @lostandfoundsounds 3 дня назад

      Hey now, don't knock **all** of us reviewers! 😁 Although I do agree with you. I don't always trust the biased reviews of the audiophile press, mainly because they receive all of their review copies for free, so they are biased to write positive reviews so they don't upset the labels and have their supply of free records cut off. Anything I write up for a capsule review (I do more of a short "here's what I'm liking this month" style of review) I have paid for myself. So in the rare event I don't like it, I have no issue pointing out a record's faults.

    Hi Melinda 🖖
    The track that always gets me, is My Immortal by Evanescence.
    My ex used to get really bad nightmares! I used to put my hand on her arm and quietly say.... I’m here, you’re safe, and she would stop being disturbed and go back into a restful sleep.... she never remembered!
    But listening to the song, especially the lines.....
    When you cried, I’d wipe away all of your tears
    When you screamed, I’d fight away all of your fears
    I held your hand through all of these years.....etc
    Still makes me tingle when I hear it 😔🙏

    Hello Melinda. Wonderful video. And I agree with you about Discogs "sound quality" reviews. Take them with a pinch of salt! I must also agree with your thoughts on U2 vinyls. My early pressings of their '80's work are nothing to write home about!

  • @kmikko8438
    @kmikko8438 3 дня назад

    Great video as always.
    When it comes to vinyl records, it's not always about how perfect the sound quality is. For me, it's the overall feeling a record gives. If the lyrics or the melodies connect with you, then that's what matters. There's no need for a clever reason. Sometimes the little imperfections, like the crackle or the warmth of vinyl, are part of the charm.
    I only buy vinyl records I’ve already heard on CD or Spotify, so I know what I’m getting. Surprises aren’t my thing, and I don’t have a high-end setup-just a vinyl player and some small speakers. But that’s all I need. It’s about the ritual: putting the record on, focusing on the music, and maybe drinking my morning coffee. You can’t wander off and “do something else” because after 30 minutes, you’ll need to flip the record or change it. That makes you listen more intently and engage with the music on a different level.
    That’s also why I don’t usually even read Discogs reviews. It doesn’t really matter to me. I don’t have “special ears” to judge if a record sounds “good” or not. Honestly, I haven’t come across a “bad sounding” one yet. I’m just here to enjoy the music I love, and that’s what counts for me.

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy  3 дня назад

      I agree that the music and lyrics matter the most. That's why I'm still glad to have this U2 album on vinyl. The songs mean something to me. I love when a record that is special to me also sounds incredible but like you said, it's really about the music. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️

    Interesting. I remember there was a record fair at my high school. One copy unopened of the Kinks’ Greatest Hits. A guy picked it up before I did. $#%! Ten years later, I see the same record in a used record store. I picked it up and bought it at the drop of the hat.
    Here’s hoping you find those coveted Led Zeppelin albums somewhere in the future at a reasonable price!
    As for the song that hits me- I have a few.
    One is New York State Of Mind by Billy Joel. As you can see by the name, we’re both William’s. But after 9/11, I saw Billy Joel perform it with a FDNY helmet atop his piano. I could not hear that song without feeling choked up.
    Sunshowers- Chris Cornell
    Going through some hard times and struggles, I listened to that and lost it. There’s a video of it here on RUclips which I recommend, Melinda. It shows the lyrics with pictures and at the end it says “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. Life is learning to dance in the rain.”

      I will check out Sunshowers. ❤️ And I remember Billy Joel singing New York State of Mind shortly after 9/11. It was a beautiful tribute.

    Hey Melinda, great video. I can totally relate to songs that trigger an emotional reaction and take you back to a moment in time. A couple for me include "Beautiful Boy" by John Lennon which struck a chord when I became a first-time father in December 1993. Sometimes a change in personal circumstances make a song more relateable where it really wasn't before. Your mention of "You And Me" by Alice Cooper reminded me of special moments with a particular ex-partner from over 10 years ago. It was a song that spoke to us both.
    There have been a few that 'hit me in the feels' on odd occasions. I can't hear "Songbird" by Fleetwood Mac" without thinking of a personally significant day for me in February 2021. Music does that occasionally because it IS personal.
    With U2 vinyl, I've not taken much notice of the sound quality. While I own their earlier LP's up to R & H on LP, I mostly own them on CD which was the chief format in their heyday so I'm guessing these were recorded & mixed with CD in mind. But I do relate to your disappointment. A year ago I bought an original Australian stereo pressing of Deep Purple's "Machine Head" LP and was struck by how flat and narrow the soundstage was compared to the SQ (quad) version I've own since my teens. The stereo genuinely sounds (to my ears) like the band is playing behind a closed door or there was a tarpaulin thrown over them. Definitely sounds like an album trying to escape & get out. The SQ sounds wide & vibrant by comparison. Love the new music room. Glad you're settling in. Happy you're jukebox made the journey though pity about the damage done to it. Love your work as always. Cheers Melinda 😘❤️😊👍

      @MelindaMurphy  3 дня назад +1

      Beautiful boy is such a touching song. ❤️ Songs can bring back so much joy and sadness. It's truly incredible how music can bring out so many emotions. Songbird is so emotional. ❤️
      My copy of Machine Head sounds decent but I need a better copy. Mine is a little rough. Hopefully, I will eventually find a better sounding copy.
      The new room is a dream come true. I still have some work to do but it's so exciting to have. I'm glad the jukebox is here as well. I hope things continue to go well for you. ❤️🤗 You deserve it. Thank you and take care.

    Talking Heads have a song that hits me: Once in a Lifetime. It's these lyrics:
    "And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile.
    And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife.
    And you may ask yourself: Well, how did I get here?"
    Especially the live version from Los Angeles '83 as a video is brilliant. It's also on RUclips. This one started the small video part of my music collection. Some songs work best as videos I guess. Darken the room, start it up on a screen hooked to the big stereo system and it's a stunning performance.

    I read comments on Discogs and consider them when buying certain things. Sometimes it's funny though, one review will say "this is the worst pressing in my entire collection" and the next will declare "this record is magnificent, highly recommended" !! I think, well I guess I'm going to have to figure this one out myself! Saturday in The Park by Chicago reminds me of my mom who passed away 5 years ago. I just listened to it recently and shed a few happy tears. I remember hearing it in the car all the time with my mom when I was very young and I really liked it so when I hear it now I go back to the car and find myself looking over at her....music really does transport you back in time! Hi Melinda. I've been watching and thoroughly enjoying your videos for some time now and I really admire your enthusiasm for music and vinyl in particular. I do admit to having something of a wry smile when you talk about mobile fidelity and remastered records. I'm a big fan of early to mid UK 60's beat music and pay silly amounts for rare and obscure 45's which I play on an authentic 1964 Dansette auto-change record player. While the sound may not be high end hi-fi it is totally authentic and I want to hear the music the way that people listened to it when it came out originally. The advantage doing this also means that even a badly marked record usually plays really well as the player doesn't pick up every snap, crackle and pop and records back in the 60's were made sturdier and more durable.! I love Discogs as I've bought so many rare 45's on there with even ones advertised as sometimes just G (Good) ending up sounding great on my record player but I've never paid attention to reviews of discs preferring to listen to them first on RUclips which is a great way of avoiding potential disappointment. Keep up the great work. Best wishes - Rick (United Kingdom)

      I love digging through 45's even though I'm not knowledgeable on what's valuable and what's not. Lol. I like buying ones that are in good but used condition for my jukebox. Thank you for your kind words. I agree that records were sturdy back in the 60's and are very cool. Take care.

    Did you know Alice Cooper's "Road Rats" is from the Original Soundtrack of the movie "ROADIE" (1980) with Blondie doing "Ring Of Fire" and Cheap Trick and many others - it's a 2-LP set and I highly recommend it - since I was a kid I always read record reviews mainly for information not so much the writer's opinions - I always looked for Producer, Label, Guest Artists, any relevant data to the music and I was lucky there were so many Rock Magazines at the time that I could get different opinions - mainly I purchased albums from artists that I really enjoyed and any offshoots like Phil Collins with Brand X and Flaming Youth or Steve Winwood with Traffic and Blind Faith - I found those extra special guest LPS really enjoyable - that Record Fair must have been a great experience so glad you reported it - Great video Melinda❤So glad you're back on Tuesdays!

    Watching your vid now on the big tv. I tend to ignore the reviews as I believe that we all hear differences and some people like certain things Not that anyone’s opinion is wrong though. The bottom line is that you’re the one who has the deciding vote. I’m really hoping they will start doing the record conventions here in pa after Black Friday. They haven’t done that in quite a few years now. Was also watching your vid on vintage turntables. And I’ve upgraded my turntable. Went from a rega planar 1 to a vintage Linn sondek lp12. And I’ve been enjoying playing the records more on the Linn. Can’t wait for next month to crank out women and children first mfsl. Good score on lace and whiskey. Has one of his funniest songs on there “king of the silver screen” I’ve noticed Alice records here are pretty beat up as well. I just saw him two weeks ago with rob zombie and he still delivers live. And your experience is the same as mine, I have a comparable stereo to yours, and their records just don't sound that great on vinyl, even stuff you think should sound amazing, like the joshua tree or war, because the time period they were made, just not amazing. I contemplate selling some of them and just getting the CD.

    I have never read a review on discogs, didn’t even really know about them lol. I think it comes down to equipment. If I played that album I would probably not have heard what you heard. Music is about emotion. We all have those great songs that stir up so much wonderful emotion, good or bad. It is out past, it is our history and when our life has a soundtrack it is really special. That Talking Heads at $50, wow, that is crazy. Love that album but I bought it when came out. A ton of those albums were made, it’s there best selling album so crazy it goes for that. Hopefully the hurricane misses you, welcome to Florida! The mountain tops have their first white dusting Talking Heads is one of my all time favorite groups. OMG you bought VU! As for the varied opinions, I agree. I think they're all based upon the ears, equipment and room of the person(s) involved. Also, if a record resonates with you on a personal level, that may supersede sound quality. BTW, the glasses look good on you; don't worry about it. Years ago, I had a song like the U2 one for you: "Watching and Waiting" by the Moody Blues. It got me twice: once when I was struggling to adjust to being in NYC and hadn't really made any friends; the other was in 2001, the day I was heading back to Nashville to bury my mother. I don't have a strong reaction to it now, I guess I have to be in the wrong mood.

    Reviews can be helpful when it comes to the quality of the record pressing, but given the inconsistencies that occur during the manufacturing process, you can't rule out the fact that you might be unlucky enough to end up with a lemon. And for some strange reason, a lot of good music doesn't get the same level of care and attention that it deserves when it comes to playback quality.
    It's also good to be aware that reviews are based on listener preferences and the equipment on which they are played back on.
    More often than not, the difference between a modest and an ultra expensive set up does not yield proportional improvements that many listeners expect to achieve. In that respect, marketing hype achieves it's intended goal. I think that you have come a long way and reached a level of wisdom and maturity when it comes to the art of record collecting that only comes with time and experience.
    Keep up the good ideas being presented, and well done indeed.

    You mention the song Cats In The Cradle and that is the song that if they were to make a soundtrack to my life, would be featured on it. It pretty much describes my dad and me. It’s not that we didn’t get along, we did, but one of us was always too busy it seemed. As for albums, sometimes the reviews on Discogs do point you in the right direction. I recently got a reissue of Warren Zevon’s “Excitable Boy”. I thought about getting the MoFi, but I didn’t want the 45rpm version. So I found another recent reissue. After I ordered it, I saw reviews that said the glow in the dark vinyl is very noisy. I didn’t think I’d had gotten the glow in the dark vinyl, but it turns out I did. There was no indication that this was the pressing I got, until I opened it. The album sounds fine, but the vinyl is very noisy. Why they pressed it on glow in the dark vinyl I have no idea.
    Lastly, that is a great Alice Cooper album. Certainly not the Alice most people think of, but a fun album nonetheless.

    Hey Melinda. Great video! I've purchased a lot of albums from Discogs as well. I agree with you in taking the reviews with a grain of salt, because in the end they're trying to sell records. In my humble opinion when I read them I don't feel they're expressing their feelings about the pressing itself and how compressed the record might be, I feel it's more about how it plays with no skips, scratches, or warps. But, who knows. And you're also right about everyone having an opinion and being entitled to their opinion, and what sort of system they played it on as well. I've been to Record Surplus, it's good. Nice snags on the Talking Heads, Velvet Underground, & the Alice Cooper. And the song that reminds me of someone who was a big part of my life and who has now sadly passed is "Michael Picasso" by Ian Hunter. Cheers.

    I agree, take it with a grain of salt. I've disagreed with many Discogs reviews. There's too many variables when it comes to systems and more importantly what someone considers good sound/pressing. For me it's a well balanced sound top to bottom with good dynamics and right timbre of instruments. I hate to be that guy but I'm convinced some people either don't have their system set up optimally or they honestly don't know what stringed instruments or brass sound like in real life. On songs & personal issues? I often hear people advise, "Live your life with no regrets," which I think is impossible. I would like to think I've avoided the type of *big regrets* like the kind the lonely guy in Harry Chapin's "Taxi" sings about! Also, I see 2 kinds of record fans. Some, like me, want the best sound possible (according to our ears) off a CD or LP. Others want the most historically accurate record they can get. Even if a song was edited, mixed & compressed for AM radio, "that's the way it was done in 1961 so that's what I wanna hear!"

    The very first US CD releases of Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby sound better than the vinyl and CD remasters. Flat transfers for the most part with much less compression and more headroom for cranking the volume. If you have a highly revolving system you’ll hear the difference. Not perfect but better than lousy vinyl pressings. Same thing for the early Led Zeppelin CD releases mastered by Barry Diament-so much better than the later reissues and infinitely better than the most recent Page mastering debacle. If you can’t swing the big expense for an RL Led zeppelin 2 than give the Barry Diament CD a try, still a compromise but really very good ! And you can find them for less than $5-

    Consider copy-to-copy variation. Even if a certain pressing is said to be good, your copy might be off. I think I only had U2-War once upon a time, but traded it, so no idea about U2 sound quality. Give me Joy Division/New Order any day (they were sort of sister bands back then). -- As I typically buy records for which there is exactly one version, discogs reviews for pressings are irrelevant. For the music I typically go to either bandcamp or RUclips to check out the music. -- Re songs that speak to me, Flipper's "Ever" on Generic Flipper: "Ever thought you're smart, and realize that you aren't? Have you? I have. So what!" So appropriate for a scientist, and a healthy dose of humble pie. Don't go out and listen to it. I am also a little burnt out by Led Zeppelin's big hits but I still enjoy the deep cuts of their albums and I never get tired of their debut. I wish I had bought the debut album at the record fair but it was $300. That's a crazy price. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️

    Seriously, how many times can you buy the same led zep album? Kind of silly. U2 is a terrible sounding band, thus the reason for the bad sound in the studio. Take the delay pedal away from the edge and he is talentless! Right on about cats in the cradle. You got that right.

      @@offandrunning8771 Melinda has common taste and only listens to music because it happens to come with album art. Her relationship to music is only to trigger memories. Her taste is way too same-o same-o and has no depth. Van Halen is nothing but misogyny personified. I guess Melinda is not intelligent enough to know when a band is demeaning to women. That being said, I love her channel.

      I don’t even bother with pop records anymore. I’ve read too many reviews of Target and Walmart exclusives about “how amazing” the record sounds. I’ll throw it on after I ultrasonic it, and it’s a noisy POS. I usually only trust reviews of more audiophile pressings because those reviewers actually have an idea of what a good pressing sounds like.
      The other issue is that someone will say the record is perfect, and it’s got loads of distortion and sibilance. I regret so many purchases from Discog reviews. Lesson learned

    Hey Melinda, I do trust a majority of the reviews on Discogs, since I have 165 purchases from them in the last year or so. I also like to update their versions with new info on their Barcode/Identifiers section from all my different versions of multiple lp's and cd's I have. So even though it is a user generated app/website, I feel most of the music collectors, etc.,etc., are being sincere and genuine. Love your shirt btw, went to see 'One Hand Clapping' from Paul McCartney last night with my ladyfriend at a one hundred year old theatre in the downtown Long Beach area of Los Angeles county! Awesome show, you and Philip would have thoroughly enjoyed it!

    Love your videos, we totally relate to most of them. We do check discogs for reviews, but for sure always with a grain of salt. Vinyl is so hit and miss nowadays, so even if most people say the pressing sounds great, you can still get a dud.
    I do disagree with you on u2 vinyl though, the early albums for sure. If you get original UK pressings of all albums through Unforgettable Fire, they all sound amazing to my ears!

    Great video, I hope you are safe from the path of the hurricane. Reviews can be tough, I think for me if I see a particular reviewer that either looks for the same things as I do, or appreciates the same, I can usual trust whether they are giving a fairly accurate review.
    What I find frustrating about reviews, especially on Amazon, is when the person says "arrived quickly and in great quality" or if it's about another version that is different than the current listing.

    A wonderful video I have loads of U2 connections I have an uncle who used to be in the British army in the early 1960ies and he was stationed in Hamburg where he saw The Beatles and The stones back in the day. My uncle sold Bono an old 1960s Jaguar car. I have a neighbour who was the leader of the Waterford Freewheelers club a local Harley Davidson group and he sold 3 Harley Davidsons to 3 of the members of U2 ( Google Blue O Shea Bono Waterford ) I got a spin on one of the Harley Davidsons a Harley Trike which Adam Clayton bought. I saw the band live 4 times The Unforgettable Fire tour The Joshua Tree Tour ( Lou Reed was the support act ) The Rattle and Hum Tour I saw them at the midnight gig with BB King and they played with BB and his band. I met The Edge when he was going up over a room above the Cladagh Record shop in Temple Bar in Dublin. He had his guitar with him.The last time I saw them was on The Actung Baby tour. I must get into listening to some of their albums which I am recollecting on cd.

    Hello Melinda!

  • @SONIC-BOOM-TV
    @SONIC-BOOM-TV 3 дня назад

    The real question is are you experiencing the music or deciphering the music? So many people argue about this or that album not sounding as good as a different version of it and to me at that point you're doing too much and you're no longer experiencing the music you are doing homework. As you said everyone's ears are different so there is no real way to tell what is better and everyone can't afford to buy thousands of dollars in equipment to even be able to compare. I say experience the music by how it makes you feel and not so much if it's perfectly separated. I'm not saying that you're wrong for what you do it's completely your right to do so but there is way too much music I want to experience and I'm not ever going to waste time chasing down some specific version of an album and have to decide which version is better the first one I find is it for me.

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy  3 дня назад

      I definitely experience the music first. I wanted that album because I have a sentimental attachment to one of the songs. It would be great if I could feel the music and also listen to it in a beautiful three dimensional way.
      I agree that we all hear things differently and we all get something different out of the music we listen to. There's really no wrong or right way to experience music. ❤️ Thank you and have a wonderful day.
