  • Today’s photo is from December of 1993 at a pregame press conference between Clemson coach Tommy West and Kentucky Head Coach Bill Curry.
In the 1993 Peach Bowl, high drama ended the game. Trailing Kentucky late in the game by a score of 13-7, Clemson quarterback Patrick Sapp lofted a screen pass to running back Emory Smith for a 57 yard gain.
With less than one minute to go, Sapp threw an interception to Kentucky linebacker Marty Moore, but Moore fumbled and Clemson recovered.
That set up Sapp throwing a 21 yard TD pass to Terry Smith and the extra point gave Clemson the 14-13 win.
    Trivia Question
Tommy West’s first and last game as head coach at Clemson produced a first at each event. What were they?

Trivia Answer: When Tommy West took over for the fired Ken Hatfield after the South Carolina game, West became the first coach ever to secure a bowl win who had not previously been associated with the team in the preceding regular season. At the end of his Clemson career in 1998, West was fired on a Wednesday but would be allowed to coach the team vs. South Carolina that Saturday. Clemson won the game, and West was carried off the field by his players, becoming the first Clemson coach that was fired and carried off the field in celebration!
