- Randall Stephenson, AT&T Chairman and CEO, speaks with CNBC's "Squawk Box" following the telecom giant's big court victory in its merger with Time Warner.
AT&T Chairman and CEO Randall Stephenson told CNBC on Friday he feels "relief" at winning the company's court case against the government and completing its purchase of Time Warner.
AT&T got its day in court and "the system worked," Stephenson said on "Squawk Box."
"We live in an amazing country," he said. "We have three co-equal branches of government. The checks and balances in this situation worked exactly the way they were designed over 200 years ago."
The $85.4 billion acquisition closed late Thursday, shortly after the Justice Department said it would not apply for a stay of a federal judge's ruling that let the deal go forward. However, the DOJ could still appeal the decision even after the completion of the deal.
Stephenson said he's not worried about government retribution, while noting it's been "600 days" since he came on "Squawk Box" to unveil the merger. He's always maintained it was not anti-competitive because it's a vertical integration, meaning the various businesses of both companies don't go head-to-head against each other.

AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson On Time Warner Deal (Full Interview) | CNBC
Now the prices are spiking. Predatory pricing is starting and now the consumers are loosing bigtime. All the things worst imaginable are happening.
This was the worst deal ever, oh wait, purchasing DIRECTV was.
AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson made a promise to invest in his workforce and create at least 7,000 jobs if the tax bill passed. Well, the bill passed and AT&T laid off over a thousand workers after it received a $20 billion tax cut windfall.
It’s clear that CEO Stephenson hasn’t followed through on his promise to invest in working people. Now, even more money is going straight to the richest Americans while working people struggle to get by with less.
This deal makes no sense.
bruh disney owns hella mf so it’s okay now time warner has cable like disney has espn and all that they own hella single tv programs so some company’s can’t use them but now with at&t they can do what disney does wit disney plus and have cable with internet that will allow you to watch any time warner brothers movies and dc shows on there cable so basically there be better than disney now bc disney been owning them on everything
If HBO Max does not gain between 60-80 millions subscribers by 2024ish this acquisition could be worse than DirecTV. I really hope Elliot can get these guys to trim all the media bs and get down to the pure telecommunications core of the business. The business with the highest margins, highest growth and catalysts in 5g and Fiber Internet. ATT should have only mobility, business solutions and ISP service it would have close to a 20 multiple and would be a beastly company. The $150 billion of debt is a gorilla that needs to be addressed. How can a company this indebted expect to pay a $15 billion a year dividend when it should theoretically buying back the shares at these levels instead of bleeding cash in dividends.
well they just hit the mark in 2019- 2020 ,, turns out to be a good buy
How much longer before 3 or 4 Mega Companies own everything?
Frightening!
Kelly Brown Agreed
do they not already
Keep in mind the government broke up AT&T in 1983 because they were the only game in town.
Randall Stephenson is raising their directv now streaming rates. Good thing I cancelled before my 7 day free trial ended.
AT&Time Waits for no-one
He should of kept OG Unlimited plus plans is better then those new trash tv plans he came up with att took a step backwards 👎👎👎👎👎
Becky, it's a blend similar to the Martini.
It was renamed WarnerMedia one day later.
Randall Stephenson becomes Ed Whitacre Junior
You should use a lot of thrush the good work today so long as well did Lucy and the best for both of us every Howden to just that hospital
I am glad that they are encouraging the pre existing brands to nurture their creativity. Content is what makes these brands so unique!!
NICHOLAS CAGE
Thank you for the interview
Wow digs on trump so subtle lol
this is the world of #mechanization: Metal and Wheels. only Excess is Anathema.
Mr. Randall is a very very hard working man. He has vision.
jai bharat Randall is trash, i work for at$t, he has laid off 1500 back in December and promised to create 7000 new jobs with the tax break, please explain to how he is a good guy
@@sinr247 the fact that an employee is speaking out says a lot.
jai bharat: what are you? His PR guy? It must be nice for you to carry his water around and wear his jock straps on your head
digs on trump! cheap 😣😣😣😣
I just hope they sell off DC Comics and Media
The face of fascism
Why?
Att sucks
lol at these Neanderthals.. T stock price is tanking.. in 5 year low territory. Stephensons #1 goal should be increase shareholder value, not destroy it.
Ted Rogers ( Rogers Communications Canada) and Mr Randall are visionaries .
Congratulations Randall Stephensons. The Law Prevail. Bring on WarnerMedia a division of AT&T (formerly Time Warner Inc.)
it was a bad deal ! they should have spun off cnn. t stock price is tanking.. 5 year low territory.. down 20 % for the year.
KC Why do you think he got paid to say that? I have all AT&T services so if doesn’t not bother me one bit.
If I was a T-Mobile lemming, I’d be shaking in my boots. I hope Sprint tanks before the official merger, and I hope that Layer 3 gets torn apart. Here’s to hoping AT&T pulls all content before T-Mobile can launch its tv service.
Att sucks
