  • A song from a never-published LP of one of Hungary's very few new wave bands from the early 1980s.
GM49 was founded by band leader Miklós Galla in 1981 after his visit to England, where he fell in love with the new music style. After listening to Madness, the Selecter, the Specials and others, he was able to write his own tunes in the genre. To this, he added his lyrics, which were often on the border of being completely silly and just hilarious. Some of their songs actually commented on the then Hungarian society (we're talking about the Communist times), including subtle criticism and irony.
This song doesn't really have a serious message; it's just a few thoughts about a modern city dweller and an ode to the fridge. But it's a good example of the ska-reggae style they were so good at.
The band was successful in the beginning and they were even awarded as the greatest young promise in pop music. But then they had more and more difficulty getting to new audiences: they could only publish two singles and their LP was shelved for good (record publishing was centrally controlled in those year).
    Band members (1981-1985):
Miklós Galla - vocals, lead guitar
    Gábor Deák - saxophone
Csaba Horváth - bass guitar, vocals
    Attila Borza - drums

This is real cool - like an experimental Devo ;-) Good playing too. Thanks for posting ;-) I was lucky enough to visit E Germany in '82, yet sadly couldn't get a visa for Hungary... Although I did live & work in Budapest in '97 - Beautiful city, beautiful people. Every evening including weekend lunchtimes and afternoons there was more fantastic live music available (like this) than any other city I've ever visited. And they were many. Hope there's more like this on YT!
