That bass flub at 2:46 was unforgivable - but being the pros & troopers they were, The mama & Papas could still blend their beautiful harmonies at that very sensitive part of the song - BRAVO !
With all the grief Mama Cass put up with about her weight and how she looked opposite Michelle Phillips, there was no doubt Mama Cass was the vocal leader of the group, Without her it wouldn't have been the same.
I remember loving Mama Cass as a little boy. She made lighthearted fun out of her weight, and was always joking about her grapefruit diets. Everybody LOVED her for this . What a woman! I fell into quite a funk when she passed.
As an ageing 69-year-old myself I have been listening to thi since the '60s and never tire of hearing those glorious harmonies. Rock on dudes, wherever you are ....!
I swear I've NEVER seen any negative comments about Mama Cass's singing. All of them take a bow to the Queen!!!...If only she knew how good she was instead of getting bashed by her weight issues.
Never tire of this. Agree that Mama Case was the heart of the group. I remember when album came out with the picture of them in bathtub, I wondered, who the heck was this? I soon found out and loved them every since.
Their timing went awry at the end because the bassist made an unforgivable mistake coming back in with the root note of the original key instead of the new key, which confused everyone for a minute while they sorted out their tuning. They recovered remarkably!
@@guitarslave Spectacular harmonies. It must of been an amazing concert if you were able to see it live. It must of felt like a special time to be alive when that was new, it's still pretty good now when you listen to it. And it seems like there's a real freedom in how they sing and perform it together.
People this is talent, even live they all synchronized together and Mamma as usual can deliver the sweetest softest sound along with Denny. And Papa John giving his brains to the song's arrangement...and Michelle oh well.
I used to sing in a semi pro band (Played in pubs and clubs) when the lead singer left the band (I started as drummer). He had a clear tenor range, while I was around F#1 - A5 (Baritone close to bass), so we had to fuse backing vocalist (Usually girls) who covered the higher ranges, but when we had to make harmonies together, it was a nightmare, God I missed my drums.
It sounds pretty good, considering both the limitations of live recording in 1967 and all the vocal overdubs they did in the studio. On the other hand, this also explains why the original lineup only did about 30 concerts.
Yes sir. I think this is their best version of the song, and they sang it a lot. Probably at the top of their game here. At 2:25 Mama really belts it out. I love her performance, even though they seem out of key at times. She really could sing, not just yell. Cass was one of the best of her generation, in an era that did more for American popular music than any other.
Many thanks for posting this PennebakerHegedus! The set list for this group's performance on Day 3 (18 June) att the close o the Monterey International Pop Fesstivalf, as far as I can fathom was as follows: Setlist 1) Straight Shooter 2) Spanish Harlem (Ben E. King cover) 3) Somebody Groovy 4) Got a Feelin' 5) California Dreamin' 6) I Call Your Name (the Beatles tuner) 7) Monday Monday 8) San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair) (the John Phillips-written single that became Scott McKenzie's signature song(with Scott McKenzie) 9) Dancing in the Street (The Martha Reeves and the Vandellas song) (again, sung with Scott McKenzie)
The harmonies sound kinda flat here, maybe they couldn't hear themselves. So sad, their harmonies always sounded amazing. Did they rehearse? Mama Cass sounded great, as usual.
mistofoles john would sing some, but denny was the lead singer. john also did backup and harmonies, but he was the leader of the band and wrote the music and arrangements, promoted the band, and musician
no John made them do this song that he wrote after he found out that Danny and his wife had an affair when they all lived together at one point in time the blonde
LunaMystkile Beltane thought that was I Saw Her Again? monday monday was just a meaningless song cranked out by john in like 30 minutes... im no expert though
You're wrong. It wasn't this song. It was "I saw her again" that he wrote as a punishment after he found out that Denny and Michelle were sleeping together.
lagofala if im not mistaken, john is the only one to openly come out about drug use (had a major coke and heroin problem) but then again i never read their books. im sure they all at least dabbled
You can sort of hear her. Around 1:50 you can hear Michelle and she's right on on cue and in pitch, she's just singing like a mouse. Probably felt a little inferior next to Cass who was the star.
+scott vickerman Oh, her mic is totally working, she's just singing ultra quiet and holding her mic really far away. You can see and hear that in the very beginning.
great performance. Cass was really the heart of the group.
Mama Cass rocks. She was an amazing force behind that sound. RIP.
That bass flub at 2:46 was unforgivable - but being the pros & troopers they were, The mama & Papas could still blend their beautiful harmonies at that very sensitive part of the song - BRAVO !
Denny's voice was magical.
Truly heaven sent.
@AJB3 well musically yes but he did find success on TV where he played The Harbour Master and voiced all of the characters on Theodore Tugboat
With all the grief Mama Cass put up with about her weight and how she looked opposite Michelle Phillips, there was no doubt Mama Cass was the vocal leader of the group, Without her it wouldn't have been the same.
MickeyT54 You're so dam right.
MickeyT54 Cass was pregnant when they played monterey

Yes and no. When Michelle was kicked out, everyone realized her voice was a huge part of the group, and she was invited back.

Absolutely superb. Even when their timing when slightly awry, they were still a class act.
Their timing went awry at the end because the bassist made an unforgivable mistake coming back in with the root note of the original key instead of the new key, which confused everyone for a minute while they sorted out their tuning. They recovered remarkably!
@@JamieGifford O my god, you're right, that was a howling error by the bass man! But they recovered.
I love this version because it's live and you can really feel it.
I wish there was more live audio of their concerts. I've looked everywhere online and have found nothing. Sucks.

Superb! The harmonies are just angelic...
Amazing. Cass and Denny just great. RIP.
WoW...Cass Is amazing...Her Energy Is here Yet...what a voice!
Cass had a powerhouse voice. Denny was great too.. The drummer in this performance saved the day following the vocal break.
Sounded like the drummer was pissed at the bass player for that critical mistake coming out of the extended rest. Ha.
Cass is amazing. Group of heart.
Heart of the group.
Mama Cass is stoned as hell and still sounds like an angel...
People this is talent, even live they all synchronized together and Mamma as usual can deliver the sweetest softest sound along with Denny. And Papa John giving his brains to the song's arrangement...and Michelle oh well.
Great memories, I can remember the hat and the clothes...like it was yesterday!
we can see how hard it's to sing this song live with the differents voices and pitches
Yes! Well said.
its horrible!

love this group ! love dennys voice on this
excelente grupo, fue una época maravillosa,...vale la pena recordar esos momentos que no volverán
So nice to see it live.
BEST VERSION!!!!
Even stoned this sounds even better than the original studio version
Great early video... what an awesome group!
Wow!!! That was incredible!!!

I want a hat like John's! Great Video!!
Para mim uma das melhores músicas deles. Linda!

Mama Cass, if she were around these days, would blow the others out of the water.
And Denny is drunk, he became an alcoholic after the break with Michelle.
Marvelous
Loved them and there songs

who played backup?
Monday Monday. Can't trust that day , it means : can't trust that sound engineer
no reverb at all.
Class.
Mama cass we miss you 💔
Michelle Phillips, though very cute it's impossible to hear her voice - mixing engineers don't do certain volume settings by "mistake".
Who needs to 'hear' Michelle Phillips!!!!
Michelle is not close enough to the microphone. Then her voice disappears, sadly.
@@bendiksen50 her mic volume was not loud enough or was not turned on. people saying after the festival she was crying.
Bellas Épocas...y no las que vivimos ahora....lo convirtieron en un infierno a este mundo....2020.....2021....2022.....😔🙏
Peter-Paul- and Mary......trusted their day too...every other day was good as every one hoped it to be.....but monday
2:35 is magical 🤯
Monday Monday. Can't trust that day. Every other day.
Mama Cass the best
Te amo cass
Excelente.
omg that guy looks so hot with that beard.
The harmonies sound kinda flat here, maybe they couldn't hear themselves. So sad, their harmonies always sounded amazing. Did they rehearse? Mama Cass sounded great, as usual.
It was the 60s. Technology was crude. Mixing consoles were science fiction. Bands balanced the sound by yelling at the guitar player to turn down.
This used to be on YT in HD..wish they'd repost
Missing Mamma Cass...irreplaceable. I never understood the Michelle thing...lovely face, but...she couldn't sing! That was her job, after all...
Michelle was there for eye candy
Michelle could sing as well.
Why did John always wear a big furry hat no matter what the weather was?
So Denny was the lead singer? I always thought it was John for some reason...
it should have been Cass
mistofoles john would sing some, but denny was the lead singer. john also did backup and harmonies, but he was the leader of the band and wrote the music and arrangements, promoted the band, and musician
Michelle wouldn’t let anyone talk any shit on Cass Elliott
I think Michelle's mic was off.
to the person who said damn Michelle just standing there now you know why because she had the affair with Denny and John made them things as a Payback
That break was a bad time for the bassist to fluff a note.
no John made them do this song that he wrote after he found out that Danny and his wife had an affair when they all lived together at one point in time the blonde

I'm quite sure michelle phillips was super high.
It was Monterey 1967. I am sure everyone was super high. :-)
lagofala if im not mistaken, john is the only one to openly come out about drug use (had a major coke and heroin problem) but then again i never read their books. im sure they all at least dabbled
This Layer back cover version of their own song where they sing it like Marianne Faithfull is good but our good lady still does a better job
Can't hear Michelle at all. Messed up the entire performance.
He's wearing a fukn dress
Damn is depressing to see michelle just standing there.
You can sort of hear her. Around 1:50 you can hear Michelle and she's right on on cue and in pitch, she's just singing like a mouse. Probably felt a little inferior next to Cass who was the star.
+millers3888 Her mic wasn't working. sucks, but you still still of hear her sometimes.
+scott vickerman Oh, her mic is totally working, she's just singing ultra quiet and holding her mic really far away. You can see and hear that in the very beginning.
+Denis Valencia I'd have her any way I could. ;)
That's a VERY charitably description of Michelle's performance! She's not up on the mike because she was the weak link. Sad but true.
They look and sound worn out. A lot of touring.
They were rightfully panned for this performance. It was bad on so many levels.
Bullshit
worst version I ever hear - horrible sound quality and bad timing at the end in my opinion
Smell my butt to know what's wonderful
Jayson Williams...WRONG!!!!
