How free is our freedom of the press? | Trevor Timm

- In the US, the press has a right to publish secret information the public needs to know, protected by the First Amendment. Government surveillance has made it increasingly more dangerous for whistleblowers, the source of virtually every important story about national security since 9/11, to share information. In this concise, informative talk, Freedom of the Press Foundation co-founder and TED Fellow Trevor Timm traces the recent history of government action against individuals who expose crime and injustice and advocates for technology that can help them do it safely and anonymously.

"Our Liberty depends on the freedom of the press and that cannot be limited without being lost."
Thomas Jefferson
Freedom is an illusion.
Only if people sit back and let it be taken from them.
Robert Rockey Which we unfortunately are.
+George Realpolitiker So what are you going to do about it, Mr Wide Awake?
so is any such concept, including slavery.
This is important. I'm glad he did this talk to help spread this idea.
_Omg_, this guy is so good in talking... Not too fast, no stuttering and not nervous at all. I wish I could talk like him.
Thank you!
Good thing so few 'journalists' worry about truth and facts now a days...

+Pablo G thanks for that
Disgusting that a special programme has to be made to protect constitutional rights from their own government.
Why am I not subscribed already 😮
The same may be true of other countries
Print all ya want.. The marketing/distributing/retailing have a very tight collusion going on.. So some writing still may not see the light of day.. Which is good, so we're appropriately protected!!
I remember back-in-the-day, when I could pick up awesome great USED books at dirt cheap.. But, dirt isn't cheap anymore either.. Did find some almost affordable used prices on Walter Lippmann titles though. So if you're into studying the problem of mass mind management, he's one of the top biggies to be familiar with.
My observation is that society does prefer to be mind-managed. So long as it's done subtly. The individuals reserve the social benefit of appearing to be independent thinkers. Guess you'd have to go to Thorstein Veblen on that one..
Anyone else here in 2021?
We need an "awakener" to our free press and tabloids to shake their core values.
1984- George Orwell
It died with Walter Cronkite.
Hello how are you doing today 😊
My banana is GMO free, though you have to buy me dinner to see it. (And it's really more of a plantain.) I've got Dole tattooed on it, and Bob on the other side (just showing my support, though if anybody has any tips on how to de-tattafy my tumescence . . .).
It's ok almost every movie and tv show says america has freedom of speech so it must be true.
tell me we don't need guns
we dont need guns we need cannons!
We don't need guns unless our government doesn't protect us, its constituents.
Depends if Melissa Click is involved. #NeverForget
how free? you should go ask Edward snowden
You Arne godis
I defer to ethical journalists over people who profited heavily off of my name/likeness over the last decade in particular.
Trump 2016 making America great again
He doesn't like free press, does he?
Isn't trump the guy who goes out of his way to discredit everybody who doesn't like him?
Did he?

Yet an0ther reas0n why the 2nd amendment is s0 imp0rant.
Not at all, THe original reasons may be honorable, to ensure that the power stays in the hand of the people. But now ?with all the tanks, drones, and everything ? Are you sure you can use this amandement against the government ?
Are you sure the military would fire on masses of American citizens? That's always been the title for tat. Is it useful? Maybe not if used alone, but if members of the military step away from firing on civilians in their own country? Might be useful.
The Germans Had Tanks too.. But If every jew would have had a gun, Hitler would have thought twice. So instead, he made sure to take their guns before hand..... I'm not say we have a Hitler in office now, but once you build the system of tyranny machine, it's only a matter of time until the wrong man or woman rises to power and becomes the all powerful tyrant that everyone thought couldn't happen... the best defense is to not allow the machine to be built... when we see police become militarized on one hand, and then disarming the people on the other hand tyranny is only a wrong vote away.
How do you justify the fact that France, one of the most free country in the world has one of the hardest restriction about guns ? And it works really well. (Even France is not perfect, but much more privacy respectful than the US)
Amri Ilias
Judging by all those deaths in that concert, I'd say no guns is working real great for you
(/•C°) /Once trump is president, there will be no more secrets!
Bullshit. Once Trump is president he'll be the worst president since Andrew Jackson.
°c°) / what does a bull feces have to do with the fact that Trump will make America great again, bruhh?
And come on, Jackson might be a little ignorant and naive but that is because his mentality was set in the circumstances and norms of those times, bruhh. Give Jackson a break, he already lost his position in the 20 dollar bill.
+E. R S. P. Please be a very persistent troll.
(/^C^)/ lighten up, fellow citizens. I'm just as horrified of Trump winning the election as are of you.
°c°) of course I don't want Trump to be president. It would devastate the lives of some of my family members and many of my community. But I just like to mess with my peeps.
^c^) / don't take it to heart
E. R S. P.
I love how expressive you are. ^^
