My friend was at Sir George Williams University during the October Crisis. The daughter of Pierre Laporte was in his class. He never saw her again after her father was kidnapped. As long as we live, the memories of the those terrible autumn days will haunt us.
@@DjPrespley What the heck, dude? You know you are supporting literal terrorists and murderers? The FLQ was full of cowards and Laporte was a good man who didn't deserve his fate.
I read Mr. Laporte tried to jump out of a window and ended up cutting both his wrists from the shattered glass and essentially was left hanging outside the window suspended in mid-air. The FLQ kidnappers dragged him back inside and realized his wounds were fatal but didn't want to take him to a hospital so strangled him.
50 years today Canadians found about Pierre Laportes passing. I was a kid in Montreal at the time. I recall the helicopters overhead and heading off the island to Hudson Quebec with my parents for the day and seeing the armed forces coming on to the island.
René Lévesque makes an articulate case. I am an English Canadian, and I certainly don't blame the Québécois as a people for what happened. No matter what happens politically, even if Quebec separates, the Québécois will always be my fellow-countrymen.
FLQ had tried to use terrorism to whip up sentiment for separation (blowing up mailboxes/injuring bystanders/attempt to attack the Montreal Stock Exchange). Kidnapping diplomats was phase 2 of this. (the story goes they were interested in kidnapping a US diplomat instead of Mr. Cross but the US diplomats were well protected both at the US consulate and at their places of residence).
@lardonbiencuit I like how the clip perfectly illustrates Lévesque's profound modesty. This perfectly mirrors the Québécois peoples' sentiments, even if they like to sometimes hide their modesty under a (somewhat unconvincing) prickliness. May we always be friends.
To me in this clip Lévesques was a coward. I am 67 years old and Bourgeault was the only one that could have lead us to independence. Fuck trudeau, lévesques et tout les autres mangeux de marde qui se dise séparatiste mais qui regarde trop radio can et qui chie dans leur frock.
I never saw Levesque without a cigarette in his hand. During his interview here you can see the smoke from his cigarette rising from the background. It was estimated he smoked ~4 packs a day. When he passed away his heart was shown to have had many so-called "silent heart attacks"--the accumulation of heart damage without acute symptoms
I remember watching the 1970 World Series between the Cincinnati Reds and the Baltimore Orioles in October 1970. The NBC coverage of the game was being shown on the CBC and CBC interrupted coverage of the game to announce updates on the James Cross situation and then reported that Mr. Laporte had been kidnapped in front of his home while playing football with his sons. The late Alex Trebek was one of the CBC announcers who provided updates on the situation that day.
If the separatists wants their own country, then let them pay their own ways. Stop the transfer of billions of dollars. Let them beg for Canada's help.
@@Jaycee-Bee I mean you don't want your country to be split in two and it would be weird if a person from Quebec was prime minister of Canada and Quebec became independent or was independent. he would have no real right to be prime minister anymore as he won't really be Canadian anymore.

Sounds right. They murdered him in cold blood and were all set free later and one of them ran for political office!.

@Fluffy Muffin You can leave Canada whenever you want :-)
But don't support the militant seperatists.

I've never seen this side of Mr Levesque. Perfect articulation.

So, why sent so many people from around canada to tell us to vote no in 1995?
