Love that my beloved Colossal Dreadmaw is so iconic that it’s getting a shout-out 23 years before it came out
Seeing this posted '4 minutes ago' on my feed just made my day, love this series!
Anyone that sponsors this show is definitely in for a treat because the hosts have so much goodwill built up and such a passionate fanbase that helping them will totally pay off
I love the awards section. Very creative categories, not just "best worst"
I live for these. Thank you, gentlemen, for taking time out of your busy lives to give us such great content.
Hi, Italian fan here!
Legends was the oldest expansion to be translated in Italian, but in Italy we got The Dark before Legends. This is because the Italian distributor, Stratelibri, wanted the current expansion to be distributed first. Since Fallen Empires was overprinted, they didn't make an Italian edition of it, and so they got The Dark, which was still available in early 1995. Italian Legends came out in late 1995, close to Ice Age, which we got in early 1996 here.
I have a question for you Americans about Legends.
There are rumors about the Italian Legends printout creating some upset in America, since after one year and a half new boxes of Legends arrived from overseas and people could get black bordered Legends cards that were declared out of print. Do you confirm this?
A note on the counter types.
Legends cards just told to put counters, without specifting any type. Counter types were introduced in later reprints (Cronicles and 4th Edition).
Thanks and keep on the great work!
Interesting note about Chromium - it is printed with Rampage {2} (two colorless mana), rather than Rampage 2. It's very tough to see against the color of the text box unless you look closely, though.
Just became a patreon, well worth it. This is 2h20 long, multiple hours of extra podcasts is even better ❤
My personal fan theory for why Moat isn't an Enchant World is that the designers wanted you to combo Moat with Gravity Sphere for the "hard lock", so only one of them could be an Enchant World. Of the two, Gravity Sphere feels more like "wacky alternate dimension with different rules/physics" (whereas Moat is more "personal defensive structure that I'll construct and then never leave"), so Gravity Sphere was the one that got the Enchant World tag.
😅4😢🎉 you ooo4😅😅 a lot of o?
45:51 Love it. Pat Sulli’s “The Abyss” on coverage. Wherever, whenever
Patrick's story during the credits had me rolling. Love the show; looking forward to The Dark and the '94 world champs showdown!
Thanks for going through the og sets as well. I enjoy this set as a 93/94 player, because there are so, so many cool cards to brew around and collect. I'm still tweaking my Living Plane deck, making a new brew around land tax and saving up for numerous cards out of this set.
Legends sat on shelves for a while in Australia (well at least canberra) till at least 96 though it was always more expensive than later sets
Been excited for this to come out, and big props for being able to get in some Italian Legends boosters!
Love it, guys, this show has been my new favorite thing in the magic community, thanks for all you do!
My winner for the set is Dakkon Blackblade. We all loved it in '94.
I loved it a couple of years later in Chronicles.
Started playing in Revised, I never saw a Legends pack in the wild. My brother and I got tons of Chronicles packs to snag up some of these cards.
The thing about the Banding lands is: all the legends in the set were all multicolour so you would very likely give banding to all the legends in your deck. if you happen to have 2 in play. So it did work better than it looks.
My roommate had a Chain of Meph mono black deck mill deck. It was sick. He had howling mines and anvil of bogardin in it. So, with 1 chains and a howling mine, you draw 2 discard 1. With 1 chains and 2 howling mine, you draw 3 discard 2. With Anvil, it was even harsher. 1 chains 1 anvil made you draw 2 discard 2 cards. When you had 2 chains and a howling mine, you draw 2 discard 2. 2 chains and an anvil was draw 2 discard 3. And if you didn't have enough to discard, you milled cards from library. Factoring in things like nether shadows and hypnotic spectres, it was very oppressive. Interesting to see it work.
Love these, love the unsleeved stuff you guys rock
13:41 ive only been playing magic via arena since the pandemic and this statement couldn't be more true...i feel like ive been playing the game since i was a kid, but i havent, so i super appreciate these amazing history lessons with every episode of the Resleeveables...thank you gentlemen
You never quit Magic, you’re just on an extended break from it. You’ll ALWAYS come back.
Shout-out to Force Spike and Chain Lightning for not being OP but being solid and strong workhorse cards that are readable and still playable
Wow I've never heare of Tales of Adventure, but I live in Eastern PA so I'll have to check it out
1:17:20 Dude, Ced, you freaking LIT UP right here, man!😂
That killed me, and how Patrick was just like _uuh, oh, okay. This is happening._
Yeeeeeeesss! I've been hoping it'll be back!
I really appreciate the amount of cards you showcase during the show, regardless of their quality or playability.
So funny, Heaven's Gate now has a new synergy sith spirits and its price moved for the first time in 28 years! Nice video btw, very interesting
You guys should talk about Spectral Chaos!
The audio levels on this episode seem rather low to me. thanks for the content.
Just started watching, but as someone who was there and opened Legends, when it comes to the uncommon collation issue, it is notable that, at this point, completing a set of Magic was a legitimate challenge. Much like sets of baseball cards, some people were trying to get one of every card and build the set. It was difficult because product availability was so tight. The LGS I shopped at in Pennsylvania ordered 20 cases of 10 boxes and only got two cases. The Dark was more available and it was easier, and then Fallen Empires was common as dirt and set building ceased to ever be a serious challenge again until Urza's Legacy and people started trying to build foil sets.
I remember reading somewhere that Rampage X originally let the creature attack X extra times per turn. It was decided very late in the process that this was both too strong and too much of a rules headache to do. Maybe the set was already being printed or maybe they just thought it was too late to change the cards as written, so instead they changed what Rampage did to something that sounded like rampaging.
Edit: Aha. I guess they cover this in the trivia section.
Love the play test stories. I used to play over aol instant messenger around 2000-2001 😂.
I believe Bands With Other works now, based on the current rule 702.22c: "As a player declares attackers, they may declare... that one or more attacking [quality] creatures with “bands with other [quality]” and any number of other attacking [quality] creatures are all in a band." I always assumed bands with other meant "you may make a band out of this creature and up to one other legend", but this is even better: now it means "you may make a band out of this creature and any number of other legends".
Patrick and Cedric are the best magic commentators of all time.
Oh yeah inject a new episode directly in my vein
Re: Cathedral of Serra at 1:06:10, in a Sullivan’s Satchel column, I asked about getting my daughter into the game, and you mentioned the art as a jump off point, and pointing to that card.
One day my daughter saw me sleeving up some foil basics I got in the mail and wanted to see what I was doing, so I found some appropriate ones and we talked about what was going on in the artwork.
Now, any time I get a package with cards, once they are sleeved up we go through the names and talk about the art (if appropriate - I’m not showing a 4yo core set Duress)
Oh man, since I grew up with a smartphone, I get a mini panic attack whenever the internet goes down lol. Living before the internet itself must have taken nerves of steel
Loving this series. Thanks for the awesome content! Would love to see you guys do a companion series - face off in a sealed match or 2 on mtgo as you go through each set.
1:40:09 I am kind of amazed that you didn’t take note of the odd templating in Floral Spuzzem. The way that it is worded, the card itself decides which artifact to destroy, which was always a fun joke in my early play group.
The colour change cards were very relevant in the sideboard of local tourneys back in the day according to a few players I know who blew out the creatureless maze of ith deck turning their maze of ith black with their pro black creature for lethal.
Okay but those cards specifically say "creatures" so these specific cards could not target Maze of Ith. So yes, I suppose they're great if you're cheating or just make up effects because you don't know how to play the game, but I don't think that makes for a valid conversation topic when all of us are playing cards as they're printed and intended to be played.
@@StarkMaximum specifically target permanent becomes this colour like the laces etc... were able to target lands and enchantments giving huge advantages in competitive events back in the day
@@kingfuzzy2 Then why don't you go to the video that has the Laces in it and say this there rather than in a context where the thing you said doesn't actually work?
Anyway while you're having fun turning my lands orange or whatever I'm just gonna keep Lightning Bolting you and we'll see who wins faster
@@StarkMaximum I don't understand but okay hope you enjoy life one day
45:59 World Enchantments 🤝 Questing Beast
This would be a way better design if you just added "The" to the name
Or Vendilion Clique. I always forget it’s Legendary
1st time viewer of your channel. Loved this content. Keep up the good work. I subscribed.
Time stamp all the Cedric memory games nestle here!!
“SEVEN!” *click*
Thanks for that story; best laugh I’ve had in a while!
Unless I’m mistaken, the bands with rules were updated to allow an attacking band to consist of a creature with bands with (x) and any number of (x-type) creatures
Yaaaay! Hope the catalogue of these doesn't dissappear one day like this podcast I used to like...
We own it now
@patricksullivan9194 ahhh guess that makes sense. Too bad it's gone. The show is fantastic though!
guys you're doing great work! love these insightful banter podcasts!
Don't forget about Unnatural Selection from Apocalypse being a premium piece of blue removal due to the "they both die" rule.
Chromium was my favorite card as a child, and when I taught my best friend to play his was stangg
I can't wait until Homelands and the discussion on the only asymmetric Enchant World, the glorious Koskun Falls! Let's hear it for a different colored Propoganda before Propoganda with an upkeep cost to stay there!
I think rampage was designed specifically to counter how powerful banding multi blocking was
You missed a misprint! Imprison has all copies where the circle that goes around a number 1 in the text box is shifted upwards! Really obvious once you see it.
I love this videos! I watched Homelands first (the last that came out) and now I'm watching all the series. Little clarification, the Enchant Worlds still exists, they didn't make new ones, but the old ones still work in the same way as they did back then, there can only be one in play at the time!
Yes
Very excited. Tried to watch on patron but the video lagged incredibly hard
Make sure to include Shields of Velis Vel in your sand deck.
"If you're going to be playing a lot of Glyphs, make sure to off your opponent's Ichneumon Druid first." - InQuest
Right on! The love for the gold cards is strong.
I had a Chronicles printing of Chromium that got stolen from me when I lent my deck to a (former) friend in 8th grade. Was so disappointed. They also took my Feldon's Cane, and tried to replace the cards with junk from their own collection, thinking I wouldn't notice. Never did get the cards back, even though I knew who took them.
In the trivia section, for "Range strike" there are actually four creatures in the set with that ability. You all neglected to mention Tor Wauki and Lady Caleria.
Along with Tetsuo, Bartel Runeaxe was also immune to Auras.
I picked up my fourth borderless Boseiju from TOA after this video. I told them thanks for sponsoring. It just came in. The packaging was crazy good for a $50 single.
If I was in the market for higher end cards, I'd definitely trust them.
lol at the "2 years of Armageddon" request. Looks like it might be 3 now..
No respect for angus mackenzie :(
Also, love the show, guys. You both are incredible.
TOA is in my wife's hometown! Skaff Elias went to that school district too!
Oh yeah her dad is named Chris page too .. but he's not that Chris page
I find it interesting that you mention multi colour and legend and two liked mechanics that are technically downsides, because those two "downsides" are made into upsides in commander.
Finally!
I believe R&D has said that Legendary is added to lands solely for gameplay balance reasons now. I'm not sure when that started but that philosophy goes back at least 15 years. People have asked why Valakut isn't legendary--it has a very specific place name and seems like it should be a legendary land based on that. The lore explanation is that a land card represents harvesting the mana from a place and a place can have multiple mana taps and this is the explanation that has been given for Valakut. I've always wondered if the Champions of Kamigawa lands were Legendary strictly for flavor or for gameplay as well; I guess being untapped basics with all upside in formats without Blood Moon might be too much? It's not really clear.
Can we hear more about this chess cycle that didn't make it into the set?
Proud of myself I got TIrassic Egg and Voodoo Doll 😂
The final grade section was so funny
I bought a copy of divine intervention just because I love looking at the artwork. Thank you for giving it a little spotlight. It is my favorite terrible card.
Your instincts are right that Karakas is a good EDH card. Its banned in the format 😂
Shouts out to Ground zero comics, Cedric knows what’s up with the sticker on his laptop 😂
Most serious set design ever? 1st card: Magic Donalds- U+G+1 Instant -Force target player to eat target card.
Flavor text: "Hey Timmy! Bah-dah dah-da Da-Dahh."
Definitely played over the phone as a kid.
1:32:26
R&D Intern: “Guys, I got it! The set is perfect! All we need to do is reprint Mana Drain!”
*Gets hit by a bus driven my Mark Rosewater*
MaRo: “Any other bright ideas?”
R&D Intern B: “Um, Eternal Masters in paper cards?”
*Gets grabbed and dragged off to Hasbro Jail*
MaRo: “You don’t know how many times I’ve tried kid.”
Please use this comment as the official petition to reprint Armageddon into standard. 1:12:51
Craw giant was my very first magic card
Best card name in the set; "Axelrod Gunnarson", IMHO.
20:30 this is the real line of demarcation for the generations of magic players.
I remember phone call magic games!!!
For trivia you skipped over Equinox, it’s the only card in the game that looks into the future and does something based on what will happen if the spell resolves.
1:48:33 that laugh was so infectious
When you guys get to set blocks, are you going to be doing single block videos or each set within the block gets a video?
Each set within the block gets a video
I would give the worst card to the Bands With Other Legends lands. Besides banding being an ability that makes attacking impossible, as Patrick said they also do not actually work the way someone would assume they do by reading them.
Thoughts on Sylvan Library? Bummed your guys didn’t really discuss that one
You guys have me thinking; was Rampage an ability designed to combat banding? Rampage introduced in a set with the bands woth other concept seems to say so. Previously, you explained how banding was very good when it came to choosing blokers. IDK?
That’s a reasonable theory, but I think it’s a coincidence. I remember reading that Rampage originally did something completely different, but rather than changing the text on a bunch of cards late in the process, they changed what Rampage was to something that sounded “rampagey”.
And while Banding is a strong ability in theory, it only helps you in creature combat, and early competitive Magic wasn’t really about that.
I definitely played magic on the phone with friends, but we didn't have copies of the other decks or proxies so you just kept their board state in your head and I credit that with my ability to multitask during magic
Cedric's reaction to Glyph of Destruction was hilarious. I started laughing just because he was laughing so hard. I totally understand his reaction though. +10/+0 seems so random. Many of the super old cards will leave you scratching your head in disbelief because the designs are just so astonishingly terrible.
Loving the show btw. Easily my favorite (and most anticipated) podcast at the moment.
I believe you’re making this “discuss design over phone” thing more difficult than it actually was. It’s very easy to type out the information of Magic cards, print some pages, and send them through mail to the other place. Or you could even just send a floppy disk over the mail. And then when everyone has the information you call about it to discuss.
I really hope they didn’t actually describe cards over the phone; that would really be a waste of time. And if they didn’t trust the mail or it wasn’t quick enough, you could first call with a professional typist (designer reads up the cards, secretary on other side types it out) and then when that is printed out you call to discuss everything.
You missed one misprint. All Hollow's Eve was misprinted with the type "Sorcery" when in fact it was supposed to have been an Enchantment. On the Italian version the type is "correct". But since the English printing is considered the default correct version they just went with Sorcery as being the correct version. Which is too bad, the card as printed makes much more sense as an Enchantment.
Edit: sorry, posted this comment before watching the trivia segment.
That’s rad.
🔥
hey fam, love the show, i would suggest putting a limit on the number of times a card can show up in the awards, makes for more talking points
Not gonna give an award to something that doesn't deserve it.
Did they make the teased legends tournament decks video?
1:40:41 how did Floral Spuzzem not make the misprint list? After all, it is the only magic card to have agency and to be allowed to make its own choices based upon the wording when it was printed.
In my play group back in the day, we pretended that the card was sentient and had to make up its own mind
Because they intentionally wrote the bad templating. Misprints involve error in transcription such as spelling errors, wrong artist names, wrong art, missing icons, wrong casting costs, ect. Having written the correct thing down for playtesting and in the file but something getting messed up in the process of getting the file set up for the printer.
It feels like they thought that being a mulit colored card was actually a bonus rather than a drawback.
Imagine if Sand tokens were like an early Amass
THE GOATS
Those bands with other lands wasted some beautiful Tom Wänerstrand art.
Would you consider Mutate a better version of banding in some ways?
just wish it was a lot longer... lots to cover, prob would have been good to milk considering the views longterm .... but really great stuff
