Believe it or not Gnome, this was common practice back in the 70s. They'd spend most of their budget on a big name like DUSTIN and want to make sure that the draw did it's job. But yeah, the pitch was indeed over the top like a lot of other movies were at that time.
This movie was criminally overlooked upon it's release in 1978. I've seen it many times over the years and it's nothing short of a masterpiece. This movie, more than any other I can think of gave me an insight into why so many ex-cons despite their best intentions go right back to their old criminal ways.
It was supposed to be, Pacino and gang where competing with a similar sort of script based on true yet comical unfortunate news events from that time. Remember Dog day afternoon!

Honestly not sure, they said his name a couple times but who knows what that could mean.
Lol. I guess that's how they used to effectively promote movies even on the Radio as well back in the day. They just got people hooked on the names as if they were a product.
I think this was probably Dustin Hoffman's best performance. Like others have said, you forget that it's Dustin and believe it is Max. Rarely do actors obtain this level of immersion.

Russell looks amazing..Nasty but nice.
This is a fantastic 70's film. Hoffman is pushed by the parole officer and can only take so much, until... that's it...he breaks free and goes on a crime spree. The film has a great ambience, narrative and captures that period. I can't imagine there was a better actor to play this... Hoffman is dynamic.
Based on the career of Edward Bunker. Mr. Blue from Reservoir Dogs.

One of my favourite films of all time, you forget it's Hoffman in the film and only see the character, career criminal Max Dembo. An amazing performance and a fantastic seventies crime film.
One the decade's best. Still want to read the novel.

This trailer leaves a lot of unanswered questions. Such as: What's the movie called, and what's the lead actors name?

this is a fabulous movie. great character study. I'd really like to see what he did and where he went for the past number of decades. a new flick should be made showing what happened all those years and where this character is today... still a bad ass.
He's either dead or an old man in prison.
He got caught in Phoenix AZ holding up a liquor store. He never knew when enough was enough!
Open ending. It's up to you to decide. They did not show his latest mug but they showed his history .

I’ve just finished watching this film I really think it’s a masterpiece dustin hoffman is fantastic everyone is great in this film it’s got harry dean stanton who is my favourite actor of all time I try to tell my friends about the films I’m into mostly 1970s indie films they just don’t get it at all I do though I think they’re timeless films like this I will always come back to like an album that I haven’t listened to in a while and you realise how good it is that’s how I feel watching this film I love it

I just watched Straight Time for the first time, great movie except for the romance. Why would that woman be interested in a con and why would she want to stay with him after finding out he robbed the jewelry store and killed that cop? Still a great movie.

@@Laurencetw his legal guardian or whatever is called takes no action after he hits him and steals his car. Police never goes to the girls house even though he told that policeman he was dating the agency girl. He seems desperatw to get it sll while stealing and then leaves behind some jewels on the street. The end is awful.
@@johnsonapioras8697 you're right. very smart of you to catch those details. one other part that doesn't feel right to me was the murder of gary busey's character. Hoffman was 100% honest with every other character in the movie. but the murder required him to lie to both busey and his girlfriend. also, the murder was calm and calculated, while all his other violence was on a whim.
I know hoffman was badly hurt from the death of the shotgun guy, but the murder of busey is hard to swallow. busey wasn't an evil man, only flawed, and Hoffman knew that well. turning the wife into a widow, and leaving his son fatherless was an evil that shouldn't have been expected from Hoffman's character.
@@Laurencetw yes, its a bad scene too. Hoffmans character was to blame for all the bad that happened. The bar scene where hes looking for a sidekick was filler too if he ends up calling his old friend, which it was obvious would do wrong or something would go that way and Hoffman was not going to be the victim. And theres 1 more scene thats weird, at the end when hes with the girl in that restobar, she goes to the toilet and he starts watching whats inside the bag with the jewelry, takes a gold watch as if planning to give it to her when he leaves, and then nothing happens. Weird. Bad editing. Idk.
@@johnsonapioras8697 yeah, that thing with the watch at the end was weird. but I'll be honest with you...for all this movie's faults, it still impacted me at a gut level like few films ever have. just saw it for the first time a few days ago - but the impact was comparable to that of 'midnight cowboy' and 'one flew over the cuckoo's nest.' ...'straight time' is no way in the same class as those masterpieces. but still it hit me nearly as deeply as those other two. can't explain it.
