My flat cost 120k in 2002. This is just madness! We bought ourselves 11 year old cars with low kays, and expect them to last us the next 10, my last car was sold with 300 000 kays, at 20 years old, and went on for another good few years with the new owner.
R400k for a car that is almost on par with modern entry level luxury sedan. It also comes with a massive 300nm of torque. Does a Polo GTI have anywhere near that kind of torque? Now compare that to the R200k corolla that you could buy in 2002 and you will see that the R400k version is not expensive for nothing.
And considering that Polo drivers are getting a worse driving reputation than even taxi drivers, its best to just get the corolla if you want to avoid looks of disdain and disgust from other drivers on the road.
I considered an SUV for my next vehicle when I traded my 12 year old sedan a few months ago, but remembered that at my age that there was nothing I could put into an SUV that I would have been able to unload by myself when I got home. I figured a truck, bakkie, made more sense if I wanted utility, but a sedan with fold down rear seats and a decent liftover would be just a bit better. So I bought a newer sedan. Another advantage is that its almost impossible to roll over a sedan by simply steering too hard when performance evasive maneuvers. A bakkie or SUV can roll over even from a simple pothole at the right speed.
I take all your points and agree but the biggest problem with the Corolla, in this country specifically, is that people instantly think you’re an Uber driver. And that’s not often a good thing

Also interms of space it doesn't feel much smaller than the cross and exterior looks 10x better on the sedan.
Just a correction Ciro, the Toyota CVT is actually called eCVT (electronic CVT). With over 10 years of owning/driving hybrids, the truth is the fuel-saving depends largely on the driver and his/her driving style more than what the hybrid technology can offer. No, that B mode is not bringing you more regenerated power, but uses the petrol engine compression to slow down the car even more. This way you dont use your breakpads only and overheating them. Make sure to break now and then with these hybrids, because your breakdiscs are gonna rust after a while almost not using them. Changing the breakpads is about every eight to ten years, because you break mostly on a electric motor. Also pay attention leaving a higway exit on speed, because lifting the gaspedal shuts down the ICE immidiately to safe fuel, but the car will not slow down much by the motor generator MG2.

The cars with the small boots that you are referring to, are crossovers or "XUV" (not SUV). XUV's like the Rav4, Hyndai Tucson, etc are small. My Subaru Forester XT gives me 15l/100km. Or like 7km to the litre. This thing would give me almost three times the range. Pity it doesn't also make 200kW but you can't always get what you want.
Who would want stiff springs on a daily driver? My goodness! Stiff springs is one of the major reasons owners of sporty hatchbacks never keep their cars for long. They ride too horribly. As for AWD. The fact that South Africa does not have any extreme weather, I'd rather go for RWD. But the types of drivers who drive a corolla or Polo would not even know how to drive RWD safely (Just look how many of them keep spinning out in their bmw 1 series and 3 series), so FWD is fine for a corolla.
Will be released with different / higher specs (for example the XR version, like you get in the Corolla Cross)? Some additional creature comforts would be great....
A question I keep asking myself. Why do they not also integrate the batteries of a hybrid into the floor, like they do with full EVs? That way you don't encroach on boot space and fuel tank size. Imagine you could still have that 50l tank (as opposed to the 40l in the hybrid), you could do over 1000km on a single tank, as opposed to the 800KM on the 40l tank. And perhaps you could still fit a full size spare, if you really want to. Thank you for a great review.
Probably because of the space the exhaust system takes up and the heat it generates which will affect the battery- just my guess. The fuel tank also needs to go under the back seat as well.
Hi there, the Corolla Cross will only be released in the middle of November, and we're expecting a test unit around that time. Thanks for your interest
I might have missed it, but: 1)I assume it can be plug-in charged 2)Have you driven it in EV mode, and how practical is that? 3)Have you checked what the EV-mode range is when fully-charged? As someone who installed solar as a means to pay off a whole-home UPS to beat load-shedding while working from home, on sunny days I have excess solar, and it would be great to use it to save fuel/money/the planet.
Sorry I should have made that clearer. The Corolla Hybrid is not a PHEV (plug-in hybrid EV) - in other words it is a closed loop system, where it charges the battery itself. The EV mode is only really available under 40km/h, so not terribly practical but very good in traffic. In your situation, I would say you need a PHEV or a full BEV. A good option could be the BMW i3 REx, which has a range extender (generator) in the boot.
You are making a good case for petrol-hybrid and electric against diesel, and I'm sure many tree hugging motorists will adore you for that, but let's look at the facts from a local South African perspective: Firstly, petrol prices will NOT decrease, best case, maybe stay the same, but more likely to double over 5-10 more years. Secondly, we know the criminals running the country won't be able to steal much petrol tax if everyone goes electric, so I can't see the infrastructure needed for charging going up pretty soon, maybe only W.Cape. And thirdly, with our failing BBBEE/Zimbabwe-like economy, petrol will eventually become a scarcity, then diesel engined vehicles might be our only mode of transport.
Hybrid is the Answer and Not Full Electric. ( S.A 3rd World Infrastructure and ESKOM ). Toyota are Light-Years ahead and so Lexus aswell with Hybrid Technology. Great Option.
If you happen to run out of petrol and have a full battery, you can probably coast along for no more than 120m until it runs flat. The battery isn’t meant for long distance travel, but rather quick trips, traffic, parking lots and speedy boosts when taking off, hence why it doesn’t need recharging.
I think Toyota is lazy, to keep on making hybrids instead of introducing Full BEV to markets like SA. They could easily become a market leader and surpass Jaquar and porsche from a price point.
You mention R400-000 like it's small change !!!! Thats &*§¥¢¿ expensive!!! At least it has a 1.8 litre engine, not like others with a 1.2 and still R400k!! Prices are totally rediculous!!!!
This is a great review and a nice car but It seems the new corolla cross hybrid will be cheaper than this sedan. Personally i would just get the cross assuming most features will be the same.
I have the 2017 Corolla exclusive CVT I get 8l per 100 km in town. The 1.4 Diesel gets 5 Litres per 100 and this Hybrid gets the same... Why the hell doesn't Toyota just bring back the Diesel motor and save even more money on not having a useless hybrid? I get that Diesel is more dirty, but in the greater scheme of things the biggest polluters are coal, these Hybrids will do,almost nothing in the real world to bring down emissions. I as a consumer want a low cost to run car, and diesel is the best.
And for a Honda jazz. And for a fiesta. And for a Corsa and for a fiat Tippo. And pugs. A polo 1.0tsi Highline auto will set you back up to 450k depending how many options you play with.
Id rather stick to my BMW e90 320d....timeless look, better power, better quality ride, better efficiency and also reliability....just outdated technology
Mmm... move away from diesel you say... move to hybrid you say... soon that may happen and then you will eat your hybrid food from your hybrid farmer that does/may not have a diesel tractor/harvester etc. etc. All a lot of hype!! How many has died from diesel fumes (in the open air) compared to smoking cigarettes? Go figure!

You are making a good case for petrol-hybrid and electric against diesel, and I'm sure many tree hugging motorists will adore you for that, but let's look at the facts from a local South African perspective:
Firstly, petrol prices will NOT decrease, best case, maybe stay the same, but more likely to double over 5-10 more years.
Was that a fart sound when you were removinh the wheelcap?😳😂😂😂
It's not recommended to use B mode under normal driving conditions. I'ts meant for scenarios where you would engine-brake in an ICE car.
Hybrid is the Answer and Not Full Electric. ( S.A 3rd World Infrastructure and ESKOM ). Toyota are Light-Years ahead and so Lexus aswell with Hybrid Technology. Great Option.
Please do the Kia Sonet!
I never expected to see that aftermarket alarm sensor tho ! it looks so out of place
What happens when petrol is done? Does it automatically switch to battery mode?
If you happen to run out of petrol and have a full battery, you can probably coast along for no more than 120m until it runs flat. The battery isn’t meant for long distance travel, but rather quick trips, traffic, parking lots and speedy boosts when taking off, hence why it doesn’t need recharging.
@@Nico-ge9sr thanks for the thorough answer I really appreciate it.
Actually a maximum of about 2km running at low speeds, under about 35kph.
why does he have a chapter about the price but never says how much the car actually is😂
The number of these on uk roads is ridiculous (not the sedan, but the hatch and estate)
I'm not too worried about emissions.
the car looks better with projector headlights
Should have been a plugin hybrid.
I think Toyota is lazy, to keep on making hybrids instead of introducing Full BEV to markets like SA. They could easily become a market leader and surpass Jaquar and porsche from a price point.
Full Electric........with Decaying Infrastructure and ESKOM.......no mate, Hybrid is the way to go.
You mention R400-000 like it's small change !!!! Thats &*§¥¢¿ expensive!!! At least it has a 1.8 litre engine, not like others with a 1.2 and still R400k!! Prices are totally rediculous!!!!
This drive train is more efficient then that op
This is a great review and a nice car but It seems the new corolla cross hybrid will be cheaper than this sedan. Personally i would just get the cross assuming most features will be the same.
2:40 I see what you did there
It should have been a hatch
Hub caps on decent looking alloy rims…. Interesting and weird.
Today gas is R25/L
COROLLA CROSS HYBRID
I have the 2017 Corolla exclusive CVT I get 8l per 100 km in town. The 1.4 Diesel gets 5 Litres per 100 and this Hybrid gets the same... Why the hell doesn't Toyota just bring back the Diesel motor and save even more money on not having a useless hybrid? I get that Diesel is more dirty, but in the greater scheme of things the biggest polluters are coal, these Hybrids will do,almost nothing in the real world to bring down emissions. I as a consumer want a low cost to run car, and diesel is the best.
This is a real city to city car.
By the way, it looked more like a bout of flatulence than being stabbed in the wallet 🤪
Move away from diesel? You are very funny🤣🤣🤣
400k for a Polo...😆😆😆😆 South Africans smoking Crack?
And for a Honda jazz. And for a fiesta. And for a Corsa and for a fiat Tippo. And pugs. A polo 1.0tsi Highline auto will set you back up to 450k depending how many options you play with.
@@nedyahyakcam Utter madness!
How is any normal working person supposed to afford that?
The monthly payments must be crippling!
Id rather stick to my BMW e90 320d....timeless look, better power, better quality ride, better efficiency and also reliability....just outdated technology
I can’t understand why Toyota look so crap in SA, checkout how sporty even a Corolla looks in the US.
The 1.4 D4D is more fuel efficient than this hybrid.
First one here 😅
Can you say uber,bolt,maxi taxi
Toyota quantum
Wow I
Mmm... move away from diesel you say... move to hybrid you say... soon that may happen and then you will eat your hybrid food from your hybrid farmer that does/may not have a diesel tractor/harvester etc. etc. All a lot of hype!! How many has died from diesel fumes (in the open air) compared to smoking cigarettes? Go figure!
I think it's more the reason of harmful to the environment
