As far as I know, Lionsteel responded to criticism some time ago that the hardening was too soft and has significantly improved its hardening. For example, I own a Myto Special Edition in K390 and Molletta states that the hardness is 64 hrc. It's just that there are still a lot of older Lionsteel knives in circulation and the hardening is rather lower, but the hardening should be significantly better in newer versions or models.
They always did k390 at 64-65. I bought a Moletta TRE when they first came out and it was done well. They've mainly had issues with m390. Their Sliepner, D2 and Niolox are done pretty well. Not sure about m4 or 3V.
@@ryanguldbrandsen7672 I know. Bought mine directly from Moletta 6 or 8 years ago (forgot exactly). Iirc there were 3 versions of the TRE and 15 or 20 of each one, so 45-60 knives total. I'm just saying they always did their k390 well, not just something they started doing now in response to the negative feedback.
I've watched a video (not one of yours) about a test on various knives with a hard steel (I don't remember if it was 3v but anyway a hard steel) and what irritated me was that when they discovered an italian made knife with soft steel they harshly criticized it but when they discovered the same thing about a knife made in the USA by a well known brand their take was "it's impossible they made a mistake they did it on purpose to make easier to sharpen it mantaining the other benefits of the steel". some people are biased.
I actually like the diarrhea brown/green handle lol. Wish it was a satin blade though, then it would look great! I’m honestly more intrigued by that ladder in the background, that thing looks super durable 😂. I’ve had bad luck with the ladders I’ve ordered for the guys at my work lately, they last 2 weeks and I have to get a new one. Wonder if they make em in fiberglass, and if it would be as nice. Can’t use aluminum since we do solar and work with electricity, I like all my guys and wouldn’t want them to get ⚡️😵⚡️
The "older" Lionsteel magnacut knives were 61-62.5HRC and the newer ones should be around 63HRC from the ones I spoke to. Lionsteel uses a third party heat treating company (Trattamenti Termici Todesco SAS), so they could use different protocols for different models. But I wish Lionsteel would list the range of every model, instead of listing an index with a range for the steel they use. I'm waiting on a titanium Skinny now, not a really bad price for an integral and I like the profile

This. Most of the "lionsteel heat treat bad" people are just too ignorant to realize they're getting poor performance because the edge is 50% thicker than every other knife they're used to. My SpyMyto averages 32 thou bte, and cuts like a brick.

I've seen a Magmacut 60 hrc cutting nails which was very interesting. I know that in youre testing its nicer to have 63hrc but I'm only answering to youre question why they do it.
I got a Fox Anzu in Magnacut to see what the steel is about, and I was extremely disappointed when it was completely dull after 5 cuts in thick cardboard
It looks like that model has the removable flipper. Does it seem like the knife would work well without the flipper with that opening divot, or is the divot too shallow and the face of the blade too narrow?
Interested to know where Lionsteel indicates the hardness as 63 HRC. Their site lists a general range for Magnacut of 60.5 to 62.5, but I'd love for that to be wrong.
The "toothy edge" thing is mostly a myth. If all you're doing is slicing cuts in fibrous material, low grit is gonna have better edge retention. In a mixed use/real world scenario though, I've never found much difference in edge retention between 320 and 1200 grit. I've even found higher grit finishes to strop back better, leaving a functional working edge for longer. I've tested the theory quite a bit with Elmax, 10v, S90V and asp60.
Because they can and some people buy it. It's like colours on cars. Some colours are not for everyone, but usually there are some who buy what others don't like. Many stainless steel blades are coated for no other reason.
I hear you on heat-treating steels like Magnacut. My own pet peeve is manufacturers who make a blade out of CPM 3V, and then harden the blade to 56 RC...WTF? The whole point of CPM 3V is good toughness at high hardness. Why hold it back with an inferior heat treatment? You're not getting what you paid for with a heat treatment like that. /end rant

I don't think its that hideous, but I also remember some horrors of cheap, anodised nastiness Anyway, thing with these higher end, high alloy steels is that they're fairly expensive, both in terms of the material and a little bit in terms of the heat treatment. However on a batch processing line its not really adding more per unit at a scale which is going to be wildly unprofitable either. So they may as well be super hard because most of them aren't hugely tough, they don't necessarily take an attractive finish and there's an expectation from the customer that if they're buying something like Magnacut or an M390 that it'll have some apex stability and wear resistance.
M390 is known to almost always be poor performing and low in hardness from most manufacturers, and lionsteel is known for the worst m390 in the market.
