People should be livid how quickly I-95 was fixed, meanwhile transit and other infrastructure projects get stalled for months on a whim...
I personally believe we should reopen the Sunset Limited to Baton Rouge by rolling over CSX's line with glass aggregate and building the Amtrak route on top of it. Not only will it survive rising sea levels, it also requires level boarding at all stations! Free grade separation! Win-win for everyone.
what year of delay are we on with the Roosevelt Blvd Subway?
I mean im pretty sure that that part of i95 carriers many more people per day then most transit lines
To be fair to Septa, the "not all cars being opened on the trains" thing is, atleast if they are anything like the computer rail operation I know and have mixed feelings about, almost certainly due to the train crews not wanting to put in extra work of working cars with noone in them. And/or not having enough crew...
I've seen NJ transit trains with closed cars that seem to be opened as the travel down the line, likely to encourage people actually using the seats efficiently instead of sitting by themselves in the 3 wides.
Hi Alan! You might be interested in a piece published in The Atlantic yesterday called “The Battle for I-95,” which examined the unusually rapid execution of the repair and compared it to the sluggish pace of similar transit projects like the repairs to the Surfliner in CA.
I was a little irritated to see this melodramatic Economist headline: "Pain and pride around a vital American highway: The collapse of a section of Interstate 95 highlights its importance." I mean, does it really?
Freeways around megalopolises tend to have this Ship of Theseus quality in the way that traffic can be easily rerouted to redundant, parallel routes. Minneapolis has I-694 and I-494, and it's basically one continuous ring road with two names for no reason. Theoretically there's no reason for I-295 in New Jersey to all of a sudden be dubbed I-95, at least when talking about a freeway in terms of its regional or national importance for getting goods between points south of Delaware and points north of Newark. There's so much excessive redundancy in the American Interstate Highway network, and so much disruption due to routine maintenance and expansion that one high-profile incident like this doesn't affect life anywhere near like the volume and breathlessness of the media coverage would suggest.
This, like all things, would be improved with a class analysis. It's really quite difficult to get much of worth without considering the power imbalances and class interests inherent to class society.
Why don’t you have a zoom video of all the mass transit creators. Just a discussion of how you all came to be urbanites. Maybe all involved can into the video in their feed. My nephew Matt has recently joined your community. He is hoping Columbus, Ohio can be connected to high speed mass transit network.
The unholy contempt & annoyance in your voice & on your face over the noise pollution, especially when mentioning cars, is a sanctified vibe. #FvccDemCars
Appreciate the video, Alan! I had the same feeling about all the attention I95 was receiving. While I am glad the Governor and President made it a priority to repair a critical piece of infrastructure, I was also reminded how had this been a train line or bike path it would be out for months. Such a shame the lengths we go to in order to allow car travel yet completely neglect more efficient and environmentally friendly modes of commuting.
possibly the background noise was more distracting for you than it how comes through?
yeah my phone surprisingly did a good job at removing it
Would tracing the length of the abandoned Fox Chase Rapid line to Newtown be considered good enough for "stupid things to do with a scooter"?
Sorry off topic but having lived in south Philly for ten years up until 4 years ago, but IMO south Philly doesn’t start till Washington ave
As a grad hospital resident I’ve been saying this for years
Stupid idea or smart idea? Ride the scooter on 95. All the way down to Florida
Government AND corporate have BOTH developed a hatred of EMPLOYEES!! 💥🇺🇸
I heard septa is going to buy a whole bunch of Alstom Citadis trams, any comment on that already?
Wait, you have a PU-wheel scooter? In Philly??? Pneumatic kickbike owner here (one Swifty, one Mibo), far better over uneven surfaces. Okay, okay, you want an idea of what you could do: On a Sunday morning when it's empty, pace a bus down the Ben Franklin Parkway.
Replace the broken bridge with a rail track!
All these agencies dropped everything to tend to this Very Important Project (VIP). All other projects will suffer a little bit in the name of headlines.
Scooter idea. Go outrageously fast in a bike lane (no one around)
It would be nice if we could fix transit projects when they mess up. You know they all fix that road faster than they'll fix the aging tunnel for the subway line. They'll take their sweet sweet time putting the tram back in service. And then it's never done right.
Flipkick video on the scooter. Do it.
A laudi you could say
I would be shocked if there wasn't a large amount of political pressure for commercial interests, such as FedEx, Amazon, UPS & other trucking & freight industries, to move Heaven & Earth to get the section open again
