    Haha, love the ending Thomas.
    Very true, seldom a necessity. For myself. Only factory ammo I buy is .22lr. I haven't brought centerfire factory loads in 15+ years.

    • @THLR
      @THLR  7 лет назад +1

      Something like that myself (well, excepting the cheap 6,5x55 match ammo). I bought one packet 6,5x284 just to see what a factory load would do in my barrel and I bought one packet hunting ammunition 6,5x55 just in case I was caught empty on my way to a hunt. Enden up giving away the hunting ammunition. But I have now just made a decision that enough is enough and I will reduce my reloading as much as possible and in the process shift over to calibres that's less expensive to shoot (17 HMR and 6,5x55).

    Weighing powder is alot more accurate than throwing powder. This is because throwing powder relies on gravity and weight of the powder ontop of the charge being thrown. As you throw each charge the powder ontop is reduced causing the proceeding charge to vary.
    Powder throwers are good for pistols in a multi-stage press.
    For precision reloading single stage presses are better as you also dont have plate shift.

    • @beavism305

    That reminds me... I need a new or more funnels. I have just one that works great for some calibers but others it can spill. Mine is plastic but looking at yours it looks aluminum with brass end that bottom weight it. The optimum set would be aluminum funnel with brass ends of different throat sizes to fit different calibers.
    I don't mind reloading. I can listen to the radio. The focus is sort of relaxing. My problem these days is finding the time.

      I use the Satern aluminium powder funnel sold by Sinclair International. It was one of those understated items that look so simple but do so much to improve the work. The brass weight holds the funnel in place and let the powder run into the case and leaving my hands free to set the pan back on the powder dispenser. It has really been worth the money for me. www.sinclairintl.com/reloading-equipment/powder-handling/powder-funnels/aluminum-powder-funnels-prod33260.aspx

    Why are you doing a full resize instead of just neck? Surely for long range the fire forming of the case would be a benefit...plus neck sizing increases the life of the case.
    Also...what brand is that auto scale/trickler?

    • @THLR
      @THLR  8 лет назад

      This barrel will die somewhere in this ammunition batch. By fullsizing I can just put in the new barrel and continue shooting. I normally just necksize when the ammunition batch will be inside expected barrel life.

  • @Ouwkackemann

    I am new into LR shooting and got me a rifle and a scope.
    Now I´m testing for "the load", and my question to you is:
    What do you call an "accurate ammo"?
    What must an ammo be able to do or hit, to be accurate enough for you?
    Precision, speed, consistency,....?

    • @THLR
      @THLR  5 лет назад +1

      I use this method for finding the load sierrabulletsblog.com/2017/01/03/how-to-find-your-absolute-best-load/. For me a precise loads would be bullet holes touching or better. Anything measuring 20mm edge-edge (100m) is considered good enough for this. Speed and consistency I don't really measure. I do take note of ES and SD now that I have a chronograph, but it is only considered supplementary information - for example if two groups on target are roughly the same, I will pick the one with lower ES.

    Another great blog just wondering what type of dies do you use are you full length sizing ? .l have a R8 with a 6.5x55 match barrel and will start reloading for it soon l have reloaded quite a bit for other calibers and have used bushing neck dies with great success .What would be your advise for Reloading the R8 .?Neck sizing or Full length with neck bushing ...

    • @THLR
      @THLR  8 лет назад

      I try to necksize only to keep the work involved to a minimum. Full lenght sizing requires case lube and degrasing, if I can avoid that I will. Neck sizing only requires graphite and no degreasing. For many years I reloaded 6,5x55 with a Forster Neck die (no bushings) and later upgraded to a Redding bushing die (as I read that was better). I honestly can't say I noticed any difference in my end result. For neck sizing/ dry lube, I highly recommend this product (just dip case mouth in box and you're done) www.sinclairintl.com/reloading-equipment/case-preparation/case-lube/imperial-application-media-prod33148.aspx

    • @fisherhunter66
      @fisherhunter66 7 лет назад

      Nice video, that's a huge impressive efficient effort. So you don't believe in chasing the lands as the throat wears? you just test seating depth for accuracy with each new barrel and go with one setting for the entire life of the barrel? How many times do you use your brass, are you bumping a small amount 0.001 inch? Do you anneal after a certain number of firings?

  • @redfoxlr6090
    @redfoxlr6090 8 лет назад

    Yep. Case prep sucks. But then you get to shoot more....
    How did you determine your bullet seating depth?

    • @THLR
      @THLR  8 лет назад

      With help of my cleaning rod. I put the cleaning rod in via the muzzle and it will stop on the closed bolthead; put a pencil mark on the rod. I then drop a bullet into the chamber and use a rod to push it against the barrel lands. I then insert the cleaning rod again, it will stop against the bullet and I put another mark on the rod. The distance between the two marks are my cartridge lenght, and I adjust my bullet seating die so the cartridge to be shorter than this. It is not a truly precise method of measuring, but it is sufficient for what I'm doing. Sinclair Internationals/ Brownells sells tools that can make this process more precise.

    • @jasonmpd2946
      @jasonmpd2946 8 лет назад

      +THLR.NO
      I use the same method. A variance of +/- .001-.002 seating depth isn't going to show much effect through the more glaring obvious human error factor of shooting and environmental factors.
      While there is no reason not to have a .002" accuracy in seating bullets (because with modern loading equipment it's very feasible) I don't think even .005" variance is going to make much difference (unless you seat .005" compressed into the rifling lands).
      Powder charge accuracy and case neck uniformity is most key in having precision ammo.

    • @THLR
      @THLR  8 лет назад

      Sounds very right to me. Considering how well quality factory ammunition shoots in a wide range of factory rifles, I have never been too worried about seating depth other than maximum lenght.

  • @roarh1
    @roarh1 3 года назад

    Which equipment would you recommend for reloading?

    • @THLR
      @THLR  3 года назад

      I would avoid it. First make a realistic assessment of how much you will be reloading, if you will be reloading ALL your ammunition or just some of it. Any single stage kit topped with good dies (I prefer Redding and Forster simply because I'm so familiar with them) will do a low volume job, if you're into pistol cartridges a progressive press makes more sense. As it is, I am simply unable to find a lot of time for reloading so I buy my bulk practice ammunition and I reload the odd calibers plus hunting ammunition. To buy a minimal kit with ambition to expand or go overkill (rarely any economy in that) is both poor approaches and you'll be wasting a lot of money that can buy factory ammo. So start with identifying your actual need and assess if you have the time to do it. Reloading in itself is a very uncomplicated process, a bit scary at first, but just read the instructions and follow them.

      I put the empty cases in an outer pocket on the backpack. My tumbler is in the garage, so I dump the cases straight into the tumbling media before I enter the house. I also bought a power supply timer, so when the tumbler has enough cases, I simply start the tumbler and it cuts off by itself. When the cases are clean I bring them into the house and put them in a ventilated mesh box where they will lie until it's time for re-sizing.

    @baron30001 8 лет назад

    Hi Thomas. Do you full length size your cases every time?

    • @THLR
      @THLR  8 лет назад +2

      No absolutely not, I try to neck size only as much as possible. That is a much cleaner reloading process, as I can use graphite powder instead of wax lube. I FL sized this batch because I expect my current barrel to die somewhere in the next 1000 shots. So in order not to have any surplus ammo that cannot be used in the next barrel (as would be for necksized cartridges), I simply full lenght sized everything. This way I can just switch to next barrel and not having to worry about reloading new ammunition as well.

    • @baron30001
      @baron30001 8 лет назад

      I thought that may be the case. I also only neck size unless there is a reason as its way faster and cleaner.

    • @THLR

      On the local shelves in Norway, you'll find Norma and Lapua. As for match ammunition, any match brand locally available. Price & availability is a huge factor for me when selecting ammunition, much more than a theoretical ballistic benefit. Hei! Lader du fortsatt likt? Hvis ikke hadde det vært kjekt med en ny blog på emnet!

      RUclips har lagnt ned forbud mot å vise hjemmelading, så det skjer ikke. support.google.com/youtube/answer/7667605?hl=en

    Hej, är det "redding big boss 2" du använder?

    • @THLR
      @THLR  8 лет назад

      Usikker. Det er ihvertfall en Redding som er beskrevet som "stor" for å håndtere lange magnum patroner.

      Ja, det var Redding Big Boss jeg har.

    Du gör verkligen bra videosnuttar, Thomas! Lite roligt med historien om "Thomas & A-max´arna"...:-)!

      Mange takk for det Robert. Hornady har jo sluttet å produsere Amax nå, så dette ble en midtlivskrise helt på høyde med en overraskende skilsmisse for meg! :D

      Jeg håper det. Billige & ekspanderende kuler finnes det ikke så mange varianter av...

      SST? Skjuter mkt bra i min R93 308..

    • @THLR
      @THLR  8 лет назад

      For dyr. Amax kostet kr 2,10 per kule. SST er kr 4,91. Må nok gjøre papirarbeidet og importere et større kvanta av den nye Hornady ELD kulen.

      Thank you for your concern. I think I'm fine. :) It was some nice pice of educational distraction to watch after 1-2 hours of studying. I even found some time to watch LR from scratch at night. A very well made film if I'm allowed to say so.

      Do you see it, because I do not? It was one quite long regarding reloading and optimisation of the process. Best regards and thank you for your reply.

    1000 in one go? Dont envy you that...

      In time it's actually spread out over a week's spare time, but it is one "go" and one batch of ammunition.

      I'm batting boredom after 50, god only knows what preparing 1000 cases must do to the mind :(

      It is destructive, especially if the weather is nice outside (not so much the case here, but still...)

      Very true! Familiarity with the trajectory and good windcalls are worth a lot more than a 0,2 MOA increase in precision.
