    I think Chris is really pretty amazing in his work and presentations. I have is DVD and several train people watching it with me were impressed with clarity and editing skills (including a professional cinematographer). The narration was excellent and I hope DVD #2 is soon forthcoming. I would be happy to contribute towards the next project as I am sure others are. The "Britannias" documentary was excellent.Please more sir!

    I agree that they can be frustrating! I have had similar situation like yourself that mean I get to the filming location to find a diesel on the front... But the two or three times I've seen these engines on the mainline it has been a site to remember. Great stories by the way!

    I know how you must have felt about Cromwell being pulled from the railtour the night before. I came back from a weekend at Silverstone in 2014, we went to "my local station" to see her. we were there in the "freezing cold" for about an 1 hour maybe before being told the train was terminated at Clapham Junction.

    A great insight into the difficulties of producing videos.(See 'When linesiding goes bad' by Linesider). ps I won't tell anybody the name of your local station unless they happen to ask where I often got off after missing the previous stop due to falling asleep on the train home after night shifts at Bricklayers Arms over 40 years ago. Happy days and once again, many thanks for your highly informative and well produced videos.

    At least you have multiples of some engine classes. Over here in the States, your lucky if two of any class was preserved for some engines. This mainly regards in steam engines and omits any that are left on static display. Many have been saved that way, but there is just some thing about seeing live steam that gives them the alure that people love.

    Really good video Chris...most enjoyable. I particularly like your narrative...it gives it an altogether 'Human' feel. Perhaps you'll do more like this in the future. We have 70000 'Brittania' coming down to our WSR Spring Steam Gala at the end of the Month...she will be masquerading as Sister 70021...'Morning Star'. Last time she was due here at a Gala she failed unfortunately, but this time i feel confident that she'll be fine....just gut instinct ! ..I am looking forward to this visit a lot, and hope to get some good footage of Her !! Fingers crossed all is well eh !! Best wishes.....Steve.

    A very interesting video, thank you! Your comments in the fourteenth minute resonate with me: it is easy to have one's opinion on a class be coloured by personal experience, or from stories of certain poor performances ('Nunney Castle' and 'King Edward I's underwhelming displays in Northern England during the '90s spring to mind). There is more than enough literature from the likes of Cecil J Allen, O S Nock et al, and 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe's recent exploits, to show that the 'Castles' and 'Kings' were very competent machines. Apologies for being so verbose, I have thoroughly enjoyed your videos and, if I find your DVDs on my travels, I'll snap one up! Best regards.

    2:24-2:45, £200 an hour! Boy, the Mid-Hants Railway really tried to rip you off big time! I recall "Britannia" being stuck at Ropley Yard due to her dodgy wheelset. She was due to take part in the Western-themed Autumn Steam Gala in October 2014 posing as No. 70025 "Western Star". Sadly however, as she was out of action, she didn't take part; the Mid-Hants Railway didn't even bother changing her identity for the gala even if she was going to be on static display, hence why THAT autumn steam gala wasn't very successful despite the other Great Western Engines visiting the Watercress Line.

    Sounds a lot like the American tale of woe regarding the attempted restorations of Pennsylvania RR K4s Pacific #1361 (hint, still in many pieces after over 25 years of restoration efforts following a brief revival in the late 1980s). I have to laugh when the host talks about "only 2 or 3 examples in existence". Were that true with U. S. steam, where we are very fortunate to have even one example of most preserved locomotives.

    Hey Chris.
    I've got a question about that handrail shot... Maybe this might be seen as a bit of cheating, but couldn't you illustrate it with one of the 9Fs? I know, I know, the Brittanias are 4-6-2 Pacifics and the 9F's are (England's ONLY) 2-10-0 Decapods... But aside from the drastic difference in wheel arrangements, they do look very similar...
    Just curious... :/

      WD 2-10-0s?

    • @Jimboliah3985
      @Jimboliah3985 2 года назад

      Nope, the 9Fs were based on the Britannias. And none of them had modified deflectors with hand holes, retaining the original handrails that were believed to obstruct the driver's view and cause that derailment.
      PS: I completely forgot about the WDs at the time.

  • @FlyinBlaney

    Dang, Britannia and Oliver Cromwell are unlucky. Coming off the rails, faulty wheels, bad tyres, the existence of 78019, the Mid Hants' asking £200 per hour for filming, they are unlucky in preservation.

    Considering all the different classes of locos, and that some classes have more than 1 survivor, it makes me want to know how often do steam locos run in England? By that I mean, what are the chances of just being at a train station when one randomly comes chugging along?
    I'm asking this because where I'm from, we only have 3 locos that actually go on excursions, and 1 that is still being used in a coal power plant because it runs on compressed air.
    The rest of our locos are either rotting away in hidden sidings, left unattended as static displays at stations (and re-rotting again) and a select few are restored in our 1 railway museum. I know, it's sad.

    This is why I don't think anyone can do a proper SLIP with US engines. There are so many sole or dual survivors across the country it's not even funny. It's very depressing, especially since the nation loves the automobile too much to even support a good HST outside of the northeastern corridor but even then they wouldn't have it if it weren't for railroads that used electrics in big cities like New York, Boston, Washington DC, etc. Nor would they care.
    But I digress, I love commentary and behind-the-scenes videos like this. They are always so fascinating to hear the stories behind what made the final product.
    As for that heritage railway that charged £200\hr, they're nuts.

    I'm quite surprised that the MHR wanted so much money for filming in the yard - after all it's public access. They generally seem quite receptive towards that sort of thing. Then again... management - in any case, anywhere - can be a funny bunch...

    • @MDHGames
      @MDHGames 7 лет назад

      VehicularBrit You have to take note, the MHR is a preserved railway like the GCR etc.. and does not recieve a continued income unlike mainline stations, so they need any sort of income they can get to help for overhauls, purchases, bills etc.. Sorry if I didn't make much sense but the high rates are due to possible low income levels, the Railway needs to break even or make a high profit in order to survive :) And by charging high amounts of filming in their yards for "profitable reasons" it may offput potential customers but could allow a high profit

    • @VehicularBrit
      @VehicularBrit 7 лет назад +1

      I understand where you're coming from and I don't disagree, but also by pricing so high and putting off too many people they're not going to make any money at all, because nobody will go and film there. It presumably doesn't cost the railway anything as far as allowing a film crew into the yard is concerned (albeit maybe some paperwork?), so the margins for profit surely don't need to be so massive. Just a thought, if you get where I'm coming from.

    • @MDHGames
      @MDHGames 7 лет назад

      VehicularBrit I understand what you are saying and you are not wrong :) The reason I think why the railways charge to film in their yards is because if they didn't charge, Chris could be making loads of profits on his DVD's and the railway might feel robbed off profits. But yes, they shouldn't have to charge £200 for filming in their yard, I understand they want to make as much money as possible but yes, £200 is too much..
      Yeah I get where you are coming from and I understand it :) I think the railways need to reconfigure their ways of making profits :)

    Perhaps the BR could keep after things better for these engines than the very overstressed preservationists. Current rail systems may handle the loads of steam operation differently than the steam age lines. Either way things are very different from when they were in mainstream operation. It is quite amazing they remain in as good running condition as they do now. My hat is off to you and those hundreds keeping Steam alive in Britain. I look forward to news of both old and new British rail events. God Bless You.

    • @MDHGames
      @MDHGames 6 лет назад +1

      You don't quite get the video do you?
      This video is explaining why it took so long to edit the video and to release it. Chris isn't moaning in this video, he is simple trying to put across the point about the amount of troubles he has had putting this episode together. This video is basically explaining to the audience what issues Chris had whilst filming such as: his illness, reliability, and availibility.
      Trust me, if you were Chris and in his position trying to film the Britannia's, you would feel the exact same way.
      And before using a stereotype, why don't you take a minute to actually watch the video, and try to understand it. I can tell you don't understand the video from the lovely comment you left.
