Varied opinions are good; I think this conversation has some healthy debate... That said, your hands won't be any hotter if you line them with spandex/lycra.
A couple of points from my perspective: one thing you forgot with the head lining is if you've used white foam it can help with vision the same way painting the backs of eyes black helps, so there's less glare on the white foam. (And that it keeps sweat from direct contact kinda like underarmor, that foam gets pretty gross pretty fast) Can't really argue about the teeth, that kinda depends on style to. I would actually advise against sewn in digi, pillows make it sooo much easier to wash and pack/move. With the eyes Id simply advise that you try and get clean pupils and highlights, that's it. Depending on exactly how you're doing your eyes you can easily make yourself a stencil from a cereal box or other thin cardboard :3 You line paws for the same reason you wear underarmor and sometimes line the head, it protects the fur from direct sweat contact. Although I do not understand why people use minky as even though it would be soft it would also be hotter then a thin fabric or lycra
BLESS THIS COMMENT- I'm working on a premade rn and i just tried out that 'painting the back of the eye black' technique you suggested and it works so nicely aa♡ thank you for mentioning it!
I actually have an unlined head and it works extremely well! I'd say just as well or even better than a lined one! It's still comfortable and it's a lot less stuffy than a lined one. I can wear my head for over an hour and I'll hardly be sweating though that might just be me. My suit also has only two teeth (Toony head) and it sells the personality of the suit a lot more if you're going for a more bubbly or cutesy character.
Most of the reason people line the heads is for comfort partly, & foam can grow mold and all that nasty stuff if it’s moist for too long, this can easily be fixed by wearing a balaclava tho, so I agree with you!
I use lycra as my lining which is a far better material than others that people sometimes use. The one that scares me is when someone uses fleece to line the inside which can make it so hot and stuffy and smellier. While a Lycra one is just... So much cooler as in temperature and feels smoother. Doesn't rub as much as unlined foam does for me. I actually... Got a rash on my face from that once if you can believe it. But lycra or just using a balaclava made of a stretchy nylon or lycra material just really works super well for me. Also FAR LESS SWEATING with lycra lining. Found it easier to clean especially with spot cleaning the inside.
I agree, you dont have to do any of it, and especially not all of it. Reason makers these techniques, because its a selling point and it makes their suit different and more unique. But noone will actually notice the difference, its all for your own comfort. The sown in padding inside of the suit and lining inside of your fursuit head for excample. :3
Tbh lining just helps keep the head cool. I line my heads with quilted broad cloth. I can take the same head and wear it before and after it's surprisingly much cooler with the lining. It also helps channel fresh air through without getting into the foam pores, especially if you use a fan or ear vents. Plus, cleaning the head and ridding it of sweat is much easier
I have been practicing making sewn in digi padding.. it is really tricky.. but it's really cool once you get it down.. it makes the suit so much easier to put on.. and I'm not by any means a professional fursuit maker.. yet..
Lining the inside of the head is really beneficial not just for cosmetic reasons but also to protect the foam and inside of the base from sweat.. that extra lining is important
First fursuits I made were brutal. Entirely hot glued head, hand sewn hand paws and pads. No lining for anything besides eye sockets and mouth. I was 12 years old and my dad taught me how to sew lol. I'm 25 now with a sewing machine and made alot of improvement with my suits
Wow this made so much more comfortable with my fur suit making recently I’ve seen people line practically everything and the way I make suits makes it’s extremely difficult for me to line them! Currently I have a digigrade example of my work and I am working on a plantigrade suit so I have examples of both when I open up for commissions late 2019 but I’m really struggling on what would be good pricing any advice on that I could really use it a ton!
Plantigrade should be at least 1,500 or so. Just heads about 700+ Digi around 2,000 to 3,000 Partials is near 1,000 to 900 Just paws or other small parts is your choice, but no less than 30 or so. Hope this helps!
Depends on your skill level really! Obviously start above the raw cost of materials,, then incorporate your time extra expenses. I recommend asking those familiar with your work (ie past commissioners or social media followers) to help you figure out pricing!
3D eyes are very easy, but I see many like the more round shape that only 2D can offer plus it has a straight look rather then looking at every angle wich scares few people.
For digi legs: for some beginner makers out there, try using light leggings and glue the foam/pillows onto them, then try branching out to more complex techniques if you want. :)
I would only line the handpaws if the back of fur is scratchy or someting - so basically for comfort like you said lol, this a really great inspirational video for new makers as well! Knowing they don't have to do everything the way the pros do it is good ro hear for sure!
personally, im not drawn into a fursuit maker by what the eyes look like, im drawn in by the shapes and by the cuteness, mainly the muzzle, ears, and eyebrows. i really like big puffy cheeks, a kind of triangular muzzle with rounded edges and angry looking eyebrows. idk simple eyes are adorable to me. and complex eyes look fine to. this is just my opinion so please dont start bashing me on it in the reply section.
Another video! Yay! Thank you for this video, it will help me and many others. I even thought some of these things were kinds like, 'ehh.. do i have to...?' LYSM ♡
For Christmas, I’m getting a sewing machine! Until then I’m working on hand sewing techniques and then im gonna gather all my materials :) although my character’s species is pretty difficult, I’m still excited to try
Soon I’m gonna start my first suit! I just need to get a mannequin head, then I’ll start on the base and buy the fur later. I already bought the eyes from a really talented person who painted them beautifully, and I bought the paws as those cheap cosplay ones.
Personally I do line my handpaws with a cotton, it’s not much hotter and it keeps the stuffing from falling out lol. But I don’t think it adds much more than the fact it keeps the fingers stuffed.
I made my first pair of puffy feral paws and the fur backing was stiff enough to not need stuffing to hold the rounded shape. I have sensitive skin tho so we’ll see if irritation from the seams will be a problem
I dont make suits for anyone but myself but i dont line my heads or paws, as a super newbie at it, its really hard and as you said, "no one knows but you". I also use pillow padding cause easier to make and clean
Instead of lining my hands, I make lycra gloves. It's easier than attaching the lining to the paws in my opinion, and provides comfort if you find the backing uncomfortable. It also gives you an option of whether or not to have the lining there. :>
I automatically line my paws with gloves because I use Sparky's puffy paw tutorial for my fursuits, and that's like the first step. Its actually not much of a difference in heat for me. I use the dollar gloves have lots of tiny holes in them and are sewn pretty poorly anyway, so there's plenty of ventilation through the glove at least. :)
The reason people can’t ignore a kitten crying or a cat screaming at the top of its lungs is because their cries are of the same frequency as an infant. It triggers a response that we can’t really control because of our protectiveness of family. So, due to our protective nature of our offspring, we can’t help but accommodate the needs of whatever is making the sound. I read about it somewhere... or was it a video explaining it?? I can’t remember. Either way, you can’t ignore the cries of cats and kittens. Cats use it to be assholes and get fed more than they’re supposed to while kittens use it to call for their mother. Correct me if I’m wrong.
Ugh that's why I had to turn up my fan and put on music so I could sleep, poor Elektra wanted to come in my room but she can't. Too many things she could break--not safe for a little baby!
im confused on the puffy paws thing. do people just put some stuffing into the fingers and call it a day?? ive only made one puffy paw set but i sewed a pocket into the top of the finger for the stuffing. lining it would never make a difference because i already sealed the stuffing into place
i personally prefer to do all the things on the list, i like my stuff to be high effort and look professional but its definetly fine to not do these things, even if you want to hot glue instead of sew thats fine, it wont last long and probably wont sell well but it doesnt mean its ''wrong'' so if you hate sewing, its okay
Many people use balaclavas to line, but most use lycra. You can look up tutorials on making head lining and they'll usually say what material was used.
The way you talked about paw lining made it sound like you didn’t do it, so I’m curious, how’d you make those l paws you’re wearing look puffy without lining the fingers and stuffing them?
Same as well. I've heard some people make small pillows to stuff them with, but I don't know what shape they make it in and if the fingers go in or under the pillows. Haven't found any instruction on them :(
I like lining my heads. But I have to do liner AFTERWARDS since i don't build on a balaclava. It's basically a huge custom lining. Also something random. I don't add tongues 90% of time because it cuts off my ventilation. And for teeth, I do fangs tbh. It's hard to do a full plushie jawset. I've done suit making for nearly 3 years. People shit on me for some of my methods. But it makes mine unique in my eyes lol. Like how i don't glue fur (very very very very tight seams), non glued in following eyes (theyre made incredibly fragile so makes it easier to replace and set in). Also pillows have slid around like crazy for me so im not a fan of pillows lol. Sorry for the rambling. There's so much craziness when you do your own methods I swear.
May I add adding the eyes before or after furring?! I personally put them in after wards for reasons since I could never do before furring... but yea...
I don’t line my stuff either as long as it’s not necessary because it otherwise would cause the wearer to heat up much more (yes lining blocks ventilation)
I tried to line my second suit and I regret it so much, it made the head more scratchy and kinda tighter than I wanted and it was just much more comfortable without it. And I accidentally got a bit of glue on the eye on the inside and it made a blurry spot
I've always hand painted my eyes with pretty designs and basic designs. Yea people like the pretty ones better, but in the end they all function the same
How to make diggy padding 1.get a good pair of pants mainly leggings 2.glue on foam to your thighs in front and calf’s in back 3.glue or stitch on fur Boom I got easily put on diggy legs

I can relate to the cat thing. When I’m trying to sleep my giant overweight adorable 4 year old cat tries to wake me up, and if I close the door it’s just “meow... meow... meow” for like an hour.

Remember:
If your fursuit head isn’t lined and you want it lined SUPER BAD, then just buy a balaclava and put that on
A ski mask basically, if anyone doesn't know that term.
Balaclava is also the name of a Turkish/ Greek food
Oh wait it’s baklava oop
Yeah and you can wash a balaclava after every use; keeps the head much cleaner
I like how your cat is just crawling in your lap and playing with your sweater and your acting like nothings happening. It adds to the comedic affect XD
You don't line your puffy hand paws? Why? Puffy hand paws are so much more comfy when they are lined. The stuffing stay in place when you line them.
