If you do not have time to watch the video. In short, Sony decided to get into the video game business and used the deal with Nintendo as a "Trojan Horse" so they could get a easy in. They were going to do this by taking all the licensing profits from the CD games sold on the Nintendo Play Station. Nintendo makes the vast majority of their money through developer licensing fees and selling cartridges to 3rd party devs. Nintendo was sloppy and accepted a bad deal from Sony that could have left them ripe for a Sony buy out. Given 3rd parties loved CD because they had more data storage and are cheaper to produce than cartridges you can see where 3rd party dev would put their support. i just bought another PS2 for 30 bucks with 20 games last week from a flea market and ive never been happier with gaming right now. Im so tired of these online only games with micro transactions and season passes....
The PS2 is the greatest console of all time. As you said branding is everything and Sony with the PS was able to establish themselves as cool at a time when video games was considered "for geeks and nerds." The PlayStation 2 sold tons of software but that was because Sony flooded the market with games hoping to flush Nintendo out of the market. Almost every PS2 release was in the clearance bin in a couple of months at Walmart regardless of how good they were or were not because their was too much product and not enough shelf space.

Yes, its the goat if we're talking about sales. I loved the ps2 at the time. They had a few bangers. GTA, Oni, Twisted Metal Black, FF10, Kingdom Hearts, Dark Cloud 2 etc, but Xbox came out and that hard drive was a game changer they just couldnt get that Sony fanbase. You should watch those video game documentaries on the history channel.
@arkitekmrj I probably would've never jumped over to Xbox. That combo would've had the best platformer, best party racing game, best open world and rpg games. Best wrestling games. They would've had gaming on lockdown.
@@Shinjiduo it definitely worked out for Nintendo but just imagine had they stayed. The market probably would be slim. Would only be 2 consoles instead of what it’s been.
I think the SNES is the greatest console of all time. You may think I am old and you are right. But the SNES game library is so diverse and there are so many gems on this system. You have the Nintendo games plus all the 3th party games. I don’t think the PS2 can match that.
@@arkitekmrj Back then Nintendo was just like Playstation is today. Sure they are strict with the kid friendliness, but every game will release on that platform. There was also the Megadrive/ Genesis, but the games on SNES was superior. So you have the classic Nintendo games on it like: Mario, Zelda, Starfox, Metroid, etc. And you have the 3th party’s games like: Streetfighter, Mortal kombat, Castlevania, Megaman, Final Fantasy, etc. I didn’t mention other classics, but each of the games above were a huge hit. The only games that were not supported by the SNES were the Sega games. And we are talking about 1991 when gaming wasn’t so big as when the PS2 was released.
