VW Beetle Floor Pan Installation Chassis Tips & Tricks | 1959 Vw Beetle Ragtop Restoration

- The full restoration of the forgotten 1959 Vw Beetle continues! I found this old car sitting in a garage back in 2019. It had been stashed away since 1994 waiting for a full restoration. In 2021 I met Larry at a vintage car show and he asked me if I had any ragtop Volkswagen Beetles I would sell. So we pulled this one from it's soon to be grave, a crumbled HF garage and Larry brought it home. Follow along on the journey of the restoration videos as this car will be 100 % restored by Larry....and a couple tic tac welds by me haha :).

A masterclass in restoration!
Larry is the man.
💯, thank you RR
I like the locating "jigs" super good idea. So you make the jigs before, cut off the old pans. Thanks for the video.
These repair videos are a real treat. So nice to see things being done right.
glad you enjoyed it, more soon with Larry and his 59 full restoration
Nothing like watching Master Larry at work, awesome vid👍🏻
yes! more soon on Larry's 59 full restoration
FYI my buddy is installing new pans on a vert.....He told me a new technique. you use a tig welder to do the spot welds. turn over the tungsten of course have the metal clean. Hold the cup flush to the surface with the gas on. pull the trigger and wait 2 seconds. Full penetration weld with no drilling. Looks factory. must have really long tongs on your vice grip to hole the metal tightly together. Double the amperage and hold for 2 seconds depress the pedal fully.
I like this….
look up spot welding with a tig welder. there is a video. @@DubWerks
Man, those WW pans are NICE! I wish every vendor took the time to ensure a good fit out of the box.
yes they are , i wish i used them on my 58
A true craftsman, even the bits people aren’t going to see get an extremely high level of attention. Fantastic
👍👍, appreciate the kind words for Larry
@@5150mxVW your not to bad yourself 👍
Lucky you Jason to have a friend like Larry to learn from. It’s awesome to watch him work. Thanks for sharing. Yes, even I enjoy these videos. 😊 I can’t wait to see this Beetle fully restored.
very fortunate :)....me as well thank you Deb
Jason this is a good vid with Larry covering the install on the pan.
You should cover the welding part of the install, the part of cutting the pan open, and the repair of the tubes inside. Most people don’t know or just won’t repair the tubes while the pans are off and this is something that should always be done.
Please get a mic. The echo in Larry’s shop makes it hard to understand what’s being said.
Can’t wait til the second part.
Can tell Larrys done a few of these over the years, 100% top workmanship.. Really enjoy watching these types of videos Jason.. Big thanks for taking the timeout to make them :)
Larry's good, I liked his idea of making a jig to line things up.
Glad you enjoyed it , thank you 65’
Nice to see you back at Larrys ! Thank you !
always nice to be there :)), we thank you
Larry IS Mr. Metal! Jason is beginning to look more and more skilled at the metal/body side of things!
He is …now let’s not get crazy 😂😁
Thanks J! And a very special thank you to Larry! Always a pleasure watching him work his magic. Very informative and interesting. A true craftsman.
We thank you Glen , 💯
I don't think I have ever seen a pan fit that well on the first try... and those jigs confirm the fit! BTW, if anyone is interested, I have a bead blast cabinet for sale like the one in the background here, complete with the vacuum system. For some reason the paint is peeling so not as pretty but make a reasonable offer. I'm in lower Ct.
I can tell my when we did my 58 I didn’t show how bad off they were , wow , they fit horrible . They were the cheap pans I got along the way of buying cars .
Soak it in Grasshopper 😁 Thank you once again Larry and may the Force continue to be with you. Thanks Jason for all your hard work and the extra hard work it takes to provide us with the videos. Take care and best wishes friends. John here, from the back-roads of Northeastern Tennessee.
Always a fascinating watch when Larry gets to work! Just goes to show how much skill and time goes into a proper restoration.
I can watch fast forward Larry work all day!! Another great video Jason!
👍👍👍…we thank you
I havent finished watching the video yet and I love the jig idea. GREAT.
Wow I like those jigs, excellent idea! Plasma cutters are convenient!! Looking forward to more!
Wow! Larry is a great friend to have! So knowledgeable!
So curious about that RX7 I spotted......lol
Larry knows how it's done. A glossy chassis is a must for that perfect factory appearance!
Yay! A Larry approved video 😂
🤣🤣👍👍
Nice information. Larry is a professional.
Thank you 76
The jigs are priceless …. Awsome tip thank you.

👍👍, thank you for dropping in Tom
I'm back an it fits like a glove very skilled is Larry
Liking the videos of Larry's work and tips on restoring the beetle.
Larry does amazing work, he has restored trucks & cars in museums and you would never know it chatting with him.
I think that's what I like about him, atleast from watching the videos. Willing to give advice if your willing listen. Soaking it all in before I start my 61 ragtop.
Awesome!
We thank you
This is legitimately the single most helpful;l video on replacing floor pans that I have seen on RUclips. Very much appreciated, as I am just about to start this job on my 1970 Ghia.
Great work, thanks for sharing! 👏
Thank you for checking it out
Super informative video Thank You.
We thank you Gary
Glad your back at it
Me too , thank you
Awesome video keep it up
We thank you 👍
Good stuff!Thanks for sharing.
We thank you
Having done one myself (Bug on a Budget: on FB) I can appreciate the care he took to accomplish the tasks. Slow and steady is my motto for everything VW related. Better to take your time with removal and installation so things go smoothly. Nothing worse than getting to the install part and things are either cut off and shouldn't be or are in the way and should be.
I've always wondered how this was done. Thanks for sharing.!
Hell yeah Rad Dude!!! Get re done!! Next do the 1960 you picked up recently?? Haha I tell you hwhat, after 30 years of welding on beetles, I never pull the body! Too many variables!!
Thank you for the great video and sharing your experience.
Thank you to Larry for all his tips and tricks. So easy to follow if you have never worked on a car before.👍👍
Larry is simply amazing!!!
👍👍
I love it. I also think if you just add handle bars and pedals it would be an interesting quadcycle built for four. Just can't take it put in the rain. I'll just show myself out.
Thanks guys for the video. Although I don't have a VW, the content helps me with my 68 Camaro
Nice , I have a 68 Camaro as well …
a master at work...
👍
Very cool tips and tricks 👍👍
👍👍
Loves these videos, man.
We thank you
Nice Work ! Its nice allso Not to here someone bitching about somethig all the time !!!!! Thanks 5150 and Larry ! Think Good Thoughts ! Dont Feed the Negative ! ✌😎
The bolt hole locators is a good tip 👍👍👍
👍👌👏 Very well done. That's what I call an ingenious and experienced expert. 2) Excellent quality floor pan.
Best regards, luck and health in particular. To both of you of course.
hii CC, yes Larry has decades of restoration experience :). You as well
Unless You want to keep factory, You can do like I did and fabricate the floors, and in my case a good portion of the rear seat/luggage area with much heavier gauge material than the replacement floors. I used an old 275 gallon fuel tank . My floor was like this one, just the floor pretty much gone, but the outside edges were in great condition. And yes, my method added a bit more weight , but much more strength. And I got the tank for free so that was a good deal. Just had My time and welding materials in it, but I enjoy doing it, and I coated everything top and bottom with 2 coats of Herculiner . Came out great! And now back to the new wiring harness installation, which is a much less enjoyable task.
Fix it with what you have 👍….Larry does 100 % correct restorations
awesome content for those of us aspiring to restoration but without the knowledge! I cant tell you how much I appreciated the editing. Reducing the volume while using the tools and raising during talking is something missing from most videos. Thanks!
Afternoon guys
Larry, he don't push cars around. 😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂❤️
1:37….. just the best idea ever. Ask me how I know….ha ha ha
Nice to see how Larry made those jigs for the pan, and how he goes about doing them. I have one project that requires the same work, so I am quite enjoying this. And the only useful thing I can add, is don't use cheapo floorpans. Just say NO!
Jason isn't surrounded by trees and getting eaten by mosquitoes, yaaaaay. But he is still in rust.
haha!
great vid, educational, i need to restore my wifes 67
We thank you , yes you do 👍
@@5150mxVW i brought it back from germany when i let the army

I like him better than that other guy, Callhan.
👏 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👋
Could you please ask Larry to say “hey, I’m walkin’ here, I’m walkin’ here”. #midnightcowboy 🙏 🇬🇧
The jigs are a fantastic idea! Are they available for purchase?
Is there a way to follow the progress of this build? I've got my 60 ragtop up in the air today removing the pan which is how I found this video. Curious to see other aspects of this build if available. Tried following the Instagram Link at the bottom but do not believe any more information is available there. Thanks
Hi , Larry has made a ton of progress and I definitely need to get an update video out . I’m going to try and film some of his work on a couple other new Beetle projects as well . He is a great teacher and has decades of restoration experience
👍👍👍👀👀👀🙏🙏🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🎉🎉🎉🎉⚒️⚒️⚒️⚒️
Are the pans spot welded in? Or do you weld a full bead all the way around?
is removing the body on a 56 oval the same as removing the body on a non oval? I can not find a video on an oval removal.
How long did it take to get the first side off and ready for test fit?
The sawzall worked fast , air chisel worked well , not long , maybe 40 minutes ? Probably less if Larry just got after it with me not having to film . He’s always waiting on the camera guy haha
Does Larry have a channel?
He does not , we have talked about it . He doesn’t have time to spend on filming , editing and uploading . Most vids take about 8 hours to produce ( from start to being live ) that’s 8 hours of labor he wouldn’t get on a car restoration.
Hi, Larry Channel?
hi , Larry does not have a channel . I talked to him about it but he doesn't have the time. many people do not understand it takes hours to create a finished video uploaded to YT. that is hours Larry could spend towards finishing a car .
@@5150mxVW
I understand, thx 😉👍
70's method... Step 1- find old mattress, Step 2- roll car onto mattress, Step 3- replace floor pan.
proper microphones inside a large hard surfaced room should be a priority, mmmkay.
