16 years ago today, Hong Kong Disneyland opened its gate to the public. I grew up with the park, and it will forever hold a special place in my heart. Although Hong Kong Disneyland has never received the love it needs from Disney or the public, I would like to believe there is an alternate universe where Hong Kong Disneyland shines. 00:01 - Prologue
We arrive halfway down the middle of Main Street USA. In the background plays the first song, a rendition of “Goodbye Broadway, Hello France!” from the original Euro Disneyland Main Street Loop. This song was originally written for a film, and was revived during war times when American solders needed to leave home to fight overseas. I’m using this song here as a transition from the usual Broadway content I put on this channel to this passion project. This song takes us back to a time when Disney was putting the most effort they ever would to invest in a market they didn’t understand. The result was an insanely beautiful and detailed park that was not appreciated enough, which directly caused Hong Kong Disneyland to be built as it was. Disney just copied the soundtrack to Hong Kong Disneyland despite of all the references in the songs. This is the soundtrack I grew up listening to and associated with Main Street.
01:34 - After the fireworks announcement, a snippet of “Fortuosity” from The Happiest Millionaire starts playing. At this specific moment in the song, the lyrics say, “Sometimes castles fall to the ground, but that's where four leaf clovers are found”. This song is here to foreshadow what’s going to happen in the show, and also to set a tone to the audience that this is not a negative thing, sometimes we correct our mistakes in order to move on to a brighter future.
02:07 - Home
As the lights slowly go out and the Illuminations score rises, searchlights fill up the sky with the strong opening beat. High-launch fireworks at the top of the new castle are echoed by lower sparkles along the roofline of the original castle, shifting the perspective between the two different levels. The back and forth between low and high, old and new, shows us even though a lot has changed, some still remains.
02:51 - Celebration
Eight comets with tails shoot up towards the top spire of the castle as the Celebration segment begins. More fireworks are launched forming different patterns in the sky. A fun fact about this part of the show is that during the 5th anniversary special fireworks of Shanghai Disneyland, I noticed some new firework launching patterns and techniques they tried, but a lot of them were blocked by the chubby castle if you were watching from inside of the park. I found those patterns worked really well with the slender profile of Sleeping Beauty Castle 2.0.
03:50 - Meaning
We are taken back to the groundbreaking ceremony of Hong Kong Disneyland where the first plastic mockup of Sleeping Beauty Castle fades into the completion of the top spire. We see the multiple iterations this castle has been through over the years, from the elaborate fifth anniversary TinkerBell Castle based on the straight to DVD TinkerBell movies, to the 10th anniversary dark gold projection castle. This part shows us that Sleeping Beauty Castle has always been the heart of this park, and the decisions made about it have always been questionable. This segment eventually leads to the ultimate “Magical Transformation” event on January 1st 2018 (I was there), where they officially dimmed the light on Sleeping Beauty Castle. Then the new castle spires rise from behind.
05:26 - Departure
This point of the show marks the separation of this version of the park from the real world. As the castle slowly transform back into its former glory, we move on from what’s happened, to a brighter alternative. The shot of the newly reborn castle first lighting up from darkness with orange comets shooting out from behind is a tribute to the clip of the former firework show “Disney in the Stars” that Hong Kong Disneyland used in most of their opening advertising campaigns.
06:23 - Epilogue
We exit the show with the song “Promise”, from Illuminations. I really hope you enjoyed this show. No matter what Disney do to their theme parks, the best versions we love will always live with us. Even when the two are so far apart from each other, we go on. Oh there’s an ester egg of the SIEMENS logo at the end. Hope you got that.
