  • ACU Senior Research Fellow Kevin Donnelly slammed the “out of field” teaching in classrooms.
This follows statistics showing a decline in students studying mathematics at school.
Only nine per cent of Year 12 students are studying higher level mathematics.
“Up to one or two teachers in secondary school have never had the training in mathematics,” Mr Donnelly told Sky News Australia host Peta Credlin.
“What happens then is students are not taught by committed, knowledgeable teachers.”
“They [students] don’t get that background…that they need to be confident to do Year 11 and 12 mathematics”.

How remarkable. Anything to do with driving out the men decades ago, just like in the legacy Churches. It's called fathers, the rod, the strap. 'A man that does not discipline his son with the rod does not love him' Book of wisdom

30 years, it's been an issue. Teachers made to feel its their fault. I achieved good results, and it was a battle. Every day. One day, I answered a student mobile in class and set the caller straight. The student's mother. I was reprimanded by the principal. Public High Schools are nothing more than teenage social clubs. There are exceptions. 80% of new teachers are interested in paperwork, process, getting promoted, and wouldn't know if learning was actually happening.

State of GA in USA schools still had paddling in late 90s.
Eldest graduated high school in 2010 in VA. Cellphones could not be used unless on break between classes. Could not have in classes. Caught having a cellphone in class, it got taken away until the end of the school year.

The parents are responsibility for teaching their children discipline, self control and respect. This shouldn't be the teachers problem. Send those children home for remedial training.

In our Asian culture we always teach our kids to respect their teachers and the elderly! We will be angry if they don’t and will discipline them if they don’t!

@@user-pk5ri5wz8ythe teachers also have to be worthy of respect. If they are political activists they are not worthy of respect.

Too little too late. Discipline is only a small part of tne problem. Teachers also need to be able to engage students in genuine efucation. Boredom also undermines discipline.
