    Excellent helpful work again,. many thanks. The clarity of your voices, the pace and repetition as well as the graphics and humour all combine to create a very effective immersive form of teaching.
    Too often in the past Hebrew was taught as dead letters on a page. The living voice that expresses the words in syntagms also helps the learner to understand the natural rhythms of the language and to make grester sense of the grammar.

    Great! In this lesson we start practicing the niphal verbal form for the first time in this course, and the verb שבע is an ideal choice to begin with. Learning the niphal form has been surprisingly straightforward, especially considering the complexities of the Biblical Hebrew verbal paradigms that often pose challenges for learners. This approach is highly instructive, making it accessible for anyone to grasp this new form with minimal effort. Thank you once again for all your hard work. May God bless you always

    I am not sure to understand the exact meaning of: hai iahwe im sheker be fi. Can you please give me the litteral translation? Also, the old man's formula and the long formula given by Avram when he swears not to eat the baby s food is unclear. Thanks in advance! Marion

    • @AlephwithBeth
      @AlephwithBeth  Год назад +4

      For oath formulas, the literal translation is not so helpful: it won't make much sense translated literally, we just have to recognize and understand the formula. Literally it would be, "lives YHWH ...if falsehood is in my mouth," but we should understand it "As YHWH lives, there is no falsehood in my mouth." Likewise Avram's oath should be understood as "As YHWH lives, I will not eat this food." Literally it would be, "Lives YHWH... if I eat this food." Scholars think that perhaps part of the formula is understood in shortened oaths. So the full form would be something like "As YHWH lives, [may he do so to me and multiply to me [the curse]] if I do x." Then shortened oaths take out the phrase in brackets, leaving an 'if' clause that doesn't quite make sense without it.

    It looks like שבע uses a niphal form, since swearing has a passive/reflexive sense in which the speaker puts himself under an oath. Is that correct? Hence the 'n' being dropped in the yiqtal form? Thx
