Interesting fact about the special effects for The Thing, that dog creature was actually done by Stan Winstons studio, not Rob Bottin. Winston asked not to be credited for the film because Bottin worked so hard on it. Poor guy was so overworked that he ended up in the hospital after shooting
Glad you finally watched it, man. The Thing is one of Carpenter's best movies; some might even say his very best. It's pretty much a master class in filmmaking. From Carpenter to Cundey, to Bottin, and entire cast, everybody was at the top of their game on that film. It's a movie that never gets old, and really only gets better the more you watch it. Tarantino is a huge fan, and borrowed heavily from it for The Hateful Eight. It would make a nice double feature.
So refreshing when a creator is honest that they haven’t seen everything. I have so much to catch up on too. I’m stuck in a comfort loop of like 25 of my favorites with just clips & reviews of the greats. 🤦🏼♀️ it’s nice when someone else is new to a movie too.
I remember watching this in a double feature with the original Dawn of the Dead back in the 80s. I am currently watching this with my 16 year old son. ❤❤❤
I JUST watched Roadhouse, for myself, as well. I had seen the Thing when I was very young but watching Roadhouse only just now was a very fun and genuine experience.
Glad you finally caught it Chris. I came to it late as well...then unfortunately it was incorporated in the top 10 of my collecting lol. The sculpting on this film is truly underappreciated.
The greatest moment for me is when they are about to use the paddles to save their friends life. Then his stomach just opens up to a mouth and eats the guys hands. Just the idea that nobody would have time to react to that made it scarier.
It's been theorized that Keith David was the thing at the end, cuz Kurt Russell tested him w/the whiskey bottle...which was actually gasoline from a Molotov cocktail. So when he drank it w/no reaction, it confirmed to him that he was the thing. You can even see that Russell gives him a kind of 'I see you' look after he drinks from the bottle...
When you rewatch it, listen out when Windows finds Bennings being assimilated in the chair. You hear him drop the set of keys... that are later used to access the blood bags.
So glad you finally seen it! An absolute timeless classic. One of my all time horror films. I seen it when I was quite young and it scared the shit outta me. Even to this day it brings back the terror I experienced when I was 11. When you go to watch it again, pay close attention to the end where it’s MacReady and Childs. Take note of their breath…. Also I recommend watching the prequel to The Thing. Same name and made in 2011. Not a patch on the John Carpenter one but I still felt like it was a decent enough film. It would have been better if it was all practical effects because cgi gore just never looks right. Anyway glad you loved the film Chris, stay awesome and take care dude!
I just did the exact same thing this week! WTF?! I was always grossed out by the Head Crab thingy and it scared the bejeezus out of me! I really loved the look and feel of this movie. I guess that I love John Carpenter’s directorial style. Halloween is one of my favorites. What a sick, interesting, strange and beautiful movie. Cheers.
I saw this years ago, it's one of my favourite horror films. there is a subtle reference in the pilot episode of 2019 Swamp Thing, during the autopsy scene and the autopsy scene in the Thing next you should try the Shinning ("you mean 'Shining' ") if you haven't already
Not going to lie guy, I only watched it for the first time like a year a go and I read this andvwas like how the hell have you not seen this? Lol. It's just soooooo damn good.
I remember vividly when I saw The Thing. It was 2002 and I was 12 years old, I was on a family snow trip and there was a blockbuster video near the lodge we were staying at. So me and dad picked up a few movies and The Thing was one of them, it was the scariest shite I had ever seen and it didn’t help that we were on a snow trip lol
As much as I love Halloween, The Thing is without a doubt John Carpenter’s masterpiece. It is an incredible film, which was criminally underrated when it was released. 1982 was the year of Spielberg’s ET, Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan, Poltergeist, Blade Runner etc., and The Thing didn’t stand a chance. Fortunately, as with Blade Runner, it’s now considered a sci-fi classic. Beautifully shot by Dean Cundey it really is a stunning film and Rob Bottins’ incredible make up effects are still eye poppingly amazing today. Practical effects are definitely far superior to CGI, which the makers of the reboot/prequel chose to ignore. I remember an interview with the guys from Amalgamated Dynamics saying how disappointed they were, that despite them creating a ton of practical effects for the film, the producers decided to use mainly CG. Un. Fucking. Believable.
This movie flopped at the box office. People were revolted by the SFX. Carpenter was set to direct Firestarter, because of this movie he was replaced. Now, the sfx are revered and it’s considered one of the best horror movies of the 80’s.
I think the best thing about the thing conceptually is how it spreads like a virus, slowly replaces the host’s cells till there’s nothing original left, the host is unaware that they are the thing… till they are. Kinda like a twisted version of the “Ship of Theseus” concept
Personally I always kind of disliked that angle, I prefer the idea that the Thing is a devious actor instead of compelling innocent people to do what it wants
@@lrrroftheplanetomicronpersei8 Part of what makes the movie interesting is that you don't really know how the alien works, I personally believe that the unaware host angle is scarier, but the devious actor also makes sense
I respect the honesty not watching The Thing, one of my personal favorites. I’m a movie buff myself and hadn’t seen The Godfather trilogy until recently
Go back and watch the fifties thing from another world. They completely changed up what the thing was but man Kurt Russell was great in this movie. McCready survived if you play the video game. Just dont watch the prequel movie from 2011, they were going to use practical but the studio insisted on the cgi monstrosities we got. I did like aspects of the 2011 movie but as whole ehhhh
If you get a chance watch the prequel that came of a few years ago and then watch The Thing . I did this one night and it's awesome. The Thing freaked me out when I first watched it . Of course I was 10 years old at the time . Even the original movie that's in black and white is worth watching . The Thing is a Carpenter classic .
IT is an amazing Film! You have to watch the ending again. You missed one important thing (No pun intended) letting you know which character was actually the THING. Macready or Childs. Take a close look at them (hint). It's a perfect SCI FI movie and probably the best Remake of all time.
I've seen 3 videos on RUclips explaining the ending and they go through the all movie to show you when they think it gives away who is the thing at the end I've seen 2 videos that say Keith David is the thing and they both go through the movie explaining why, but they both have completely different ideas on why he's the thing And 1 video goes through the movie explaining why Kurt Russle is the thing And all 3 videos are so believable with no holes in there theories its great, but I prefer to think they are both human in the end and they freeze to death cus it's poetic they died cus they didn't trust each other I will make a playlist of all 3 videos on my RUclips channel if you want to see them
Rob Bottin had a nervous breakdown towards the end of the 80's and he eventually quit the film industry. Rumor has it that he became a realtor in L.A. after he recovered.
Abit off topic but have you seen the Robosen Buzz Lightyear. Could you do a yay or nay on it and imagine if they did a Major Chip Hazard using that technology.
You should check out the book frozen hell. It's an expanded version of the original who goes there short story this was based on. In that he thing is a blue tentacle monster with three eyes
What's really irritating to me are all of these "First time" watching reaction channels. They're reacting to every movie to ever exist. Like seriously, you're like 30 something and have never seen any movie ever created??😂 It's just BS deception in my opinion.
The Thing is truly one of the best horror films of all time🙌🏻
Agreed! My personal favourite 💚

Believe in or not, The Thing is even better on a second watch. You're able to understand times frames and motivations. Just an absolute classic.
So refreshing when a creator is honest that they haven’t seen everything. I have so much to catch up on too. I’m stuck in a comfort loop of like 25 of my favorites with just clips & reviews of the greats. 🤦🏼♀️ it’s nice when someone else is new to a movie too.
So many creators are doing that. It's nothing unique or inventive
I remember watching this in a double feature with the original Dawn of the Dead back in the 80s. I am currently watching this with my 16 year old son. ❤❤❤
Same Chris watched it for the first time last weekend! I have a feeling this will be one I rewatch frequently.
My favorite Carpenter film!
I JUST watched Roadhouse, for myself, as well. I had seen the Thing when I was very young but watching Roadhouse only just now was a very fun and genuine experience.

Definitely one of my favorite John Carpenter movies
It's about DAMN time!!
I LOVE this film, so glad you finally watched it.
Excellent video. Joint favourite film of all time, seeing it in the cinema for the first time on the 30th of November.
I always thought Keith David was The Thing. His breath wasn't visible at the end
The greatest moment for me is when they are about to use the paddles to save their friends life. Then his stomach just opens up to a mouth and eats the guys hands. Just the idea that nobody would have time to react to that made it scarier.
My favourite film
And so begins your life long journey figuring out the ending🙂

I mean macready was just about to drink from it before he even noticed chile's.
If Child’s was a PERFECT imitation, he would know he wasn’t drinking whiskey. I don’t think this theory holds up
A classic
You finally saw John Carpenter's best movie and one of the best (the best ?) horror movie of all time. ;) Good Job !
You should watch the 2012 prequel, it’s severely underrated and pretty good
You'll love watching all the documentaries and extras as well.
When you rewatch it, listen out when Windows finds Bennings being assimilated in the chair. You hear him drop the set of keys... that are later used to access the blood bags.

my fav horror film ever , love the atmosphere , music , practical effects , the paranioa story , great cast
You gotta review the 2011 the thing prequel
The ending where they are just sat not knowing if the other person is the thing. Such a bleak but cool ending.
I just did the exact same thing this week! WTF?! I was always grossed out by the Head Crab thingy and it scared the bejeezus out of me! I really loved the look and feel of this movie. I feel that we need a list of other classic movies for whatever reason you’ve not got around to watching yet 😊

I finally watched The Thing... for 347 time 😂
You need to get a copy of the dvd and watch all the special features and audio commentary. The thing is one of my most favourite jc movies
This movie flopped at the box office. People were revolted by the SFX. Carpenter was set to direct Firestarter, because of this movie he was replaced. Now, the sfx are revered and it’s considered one of the best horror movies of the 80’s.
Facts…so many of his movies were flops but are now classics I watch whenever I can…the Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, the Fog..love em
You should watch the prequel and then the original again, it’s cool seeing how they incorporated stuff from the original into the prequel.
that dog puppet you keep showing- was made by stan winston- who handled some of the overflow for Rob Bottin
I think the best thing about the thing conceptually is how it spreads like a virus, slowly replaces the host’s cells till there’s nothing original left, the host is unaware that they are the thing… till they are.

@@AndreaGori Oh yeah. Such a great movie. If they gave you any more or any less information than they do, it'd fall apart.
Love this movie. Perfect for the cold season. The music is absolutely fantastic as well. Please let us know if you decide to watch the one from 2011.
I respect the honesty not watching The Thing, one of my personal favorites. I’m a movie buff myself and hadn’t seen The Godfather trilogy until recently
Yep same man
I know, right! I love this movie!

For a moment I was like” he finally watched Swamp Thing” lol
I don't think i've watched it, but i've watched so many reviews of it that i'm not sure if i've ever actually sat down and watched it or not.
the thing 2011 prequel is worth a watch for the behind the scene madness alone , they shot most stuff practical but studio forced them to cgi over it
If you get a chance watch the prequel that came of a few years ago and then watch The Thing . I did this one night and it's awesome. The Thing freaked me out when I first watched it . The blood test is one of the best jump scares of all time

If you haven’t seen Near Dark definitely check it out. One of the best, dark and grim vampire films
I've seen 3 videos on RUclips explaining the ending and they go through the all movie to show you when they think it gives away who is the thing at the end

Agreed..Spider head❤
Have you watched Escape from New York yet, Chris??
You should check out the book frozen hell. It's an expanded version of the original who goes there short story this was based on. In that he thing is a blue tentacle monster with three eyes
I was shocked you'd never seen it, that said I've never seen The Blob or Invasion of the Body Snatchers...so there you go.
One of the best horror movies of its time Cool.
Please also check out the 1977 movie The Car with James Brolin.
The remake isn't too bad
Would like to see a video of a movie you can’t watch today because it’s so scary to you. For me it’s An American Werewolf in London
HOW!?
What, you just watched The Lost Boys? Truly a SIN!!! Just kidding! 🤯
