@@Trangent I'm currently working my way through the new videos. I've got about 6 rolls of 120 film that still needs to be developed from summer vacation up in Northumberland England. Hopefully one of those would be worthy of sending in! 😀
Great video! I will try this method, this man is a star!
Thanks Joan Gili!! Glad you like the video :) Good luck!!
Bravo! Really good series about film photography!
Thank you Martin!! Glad you like our videos! Good luck to you!
Professor Agar + Large Format + Historical Buildings = AWESOME! Could I entice him to come to Florida during the winter do to a workshop? No snow to shovel! Would love to take one of his workshops. Is there info available on these? Thanks and keep the videos coming!
Thanks Spencer!! Florida is definitely a lot nicer than Minnesota during the winter!! Professor Agar does not have workshops-the trip to Lily is one that he attends as a guest photographer almost every year. I don't know if I can provide the link, but if you Google Highway 12 Road Trip Photography Workshop you will find it. If you go, you'll be glad you did! Thanks as always for your kind words!!
Useful video as always :) keep up the good work! This one was particularly helpful since I’m trying these days to photographs nights scene with large format camera. Thanks!
Thanks Robin!! Awesome :)) Professor Agar loves his large format camera! Hope you get some amazing shots!!
Thanks another great class. You mentioned your spot but what to meter off the lights? Thanks,Jose
Yet again a very educational and fun video to watch. Hope you're all well and making more content :)
Thank you Jason!!! ❤️ We are well-thank you for caring :) This is a crazy time of year for all of us, but we did make a video recently. Have you gotten a chance to see it? It is our first "In the Classroom with Prof A" video. It has a fun assignment plus contest (with prizes) to enter! We are also discussing recording other short assignment videos as being in "quarantine" allows us some spare time to try new things. We hope you enter-there are still several months to perfect your entry! Good luck!! -L
You are way more fun than Ansel Adams would have been.
Thanks J.P.!! To be compared in any way to Ansel Adams is quite a compliment!! :))
Great technique and approach to low light photography. Everyone else is "pushing" film for low light -- under-exposing and then over-developing. This technique is the complement: over-exposing and then under-developing. It will be interesting to see how the two techniques differ in their look.
Just ran into this. Looking forward to trying this. Great explanation about the development time.
Thanks for watching and enjoying our video! Hope you've had excellent results with nighttime photography!!!
I wish I had you for my Photography teacher.....excellent job....
The balance of irreverence, seriousness, and excellence is without equal in these series of videos.
I can see why the Tice image inspired; there's just so much about it that compels. Our tiny burg here has two water towers ... I think they'll be featured in some of my upcoming attempts at this!
Thank you Next Hobby! I'm sure you will find many interesting things to photograph in your little burg! The towns I thought were boring (mine in MN and all of WI in general) are actually not once you really look. I bet you'll come up with some great shots of those water towers. Good luck to you!!
You are such an inspiring person! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Greetings from Portugal :)
Thank you @Nikitatomic!!! You are very kind!! Greetings from USA! Hope all is well with you and yours in Portugal! :)
For a township of 4 there is certainly a lot of movement.
Too funny!! It is an even smaller town now... Stay tuned-we'll be visiting Lily again this year and bringing you another video. Thanks for watching! :))
This is awesome!!!
Thank you Ivan!! Thanks for watching our videos :))
I like the presentation.
enjoyed this guys. Good practical advice Will.
Thanks Steve! Glad you liked our video! Thanks for watching :))
Could you make an episode where professor Agar explain how to "read" a negative? You know under/over developed, under/over exposed providing some examples and how obtain a good print in the darkroom with "problematic" negatives. Thanksssss!!!
Thank you for the suggestion Gianni!! That would be a great lecture! I will add this to the "To Do" list :))
He's funny and entertaining and I learnt more about exposure watching two videos than from any other resource online. I wonder if he talks about how one could handle and expose color film at night?
Thank you so much Aficionados9!! Glad you find our videos helpful! Professor Agar doesn't use or teach color film. Color processing uses different chemicals and equipment and is very precise-much more so than black and white. It is extremely important to be accurate with temperatures and agitation control. Here is a helpful article on color film processing at home: petapixel.com/2012/10/26/how-to-process-your-c-41-film-at-home/. I’ve seen photos developed by one of our viewers using a C-41 processing kit and they were amazing!! Professor Agar says, "With black and white I find that you need more exposure and less development to counteract the highlight build up. With color you face the same problem but with shift in color needing filter. I have never made long exposures at night with color film but shoot digital on a tripod using Photoshop to color correct." Hope this helps! Good luck to you!! :)
Great instruction. Thanks
Thank you!! Glad you like the video :))
Obviously, expert. The final print is inspirational
I suspect you may have gone with the 20 second print exposure to get the jet black in the sky and restrained street lamp, and maybe some dodging to keep the house lighted for the contrast, but I don't know.
It's interesting that the light meter couldn't read the light, the digital camera recommended F11 for 4 seconds, but the photos were taken at 30 seconds and one minute. I'm assuming the choices were from experience; possibly with the intent of having a negative better balanced to work with. Fortunately, you didn't have to worry too much about density issues.
Thank you
"since it's ah raining lets abort" haha so funny. love.this channel
THANK YOU @FILM SHOOTER!!! We're thrilled you like our videos :))
Hello Professor Agar, what tripod do you recommend students buy when they are starting out?
I found late this video. Can someone tell me, do i have to expose for the shadows? If i do not have a dslr.
great video thanks.
ive a question on pulling film. if you are pulling development by 1 stop (n-1) what percentage should you subtract from normal time given for box speed? im pulling tri-x to 200 in id11 and there is no data on it only 11mins for 400asa.
Professor Agar advises to subtract @ 20% as a start and build upon that. Good luck to you!! Thanks for watching our videos :))
thank you for you reply! your videos has been very helpful with my darkroom process.
You're welcome! My pleasure. Good luck to you!! Hope you have a lot of fun and amazing things develop!
What lens did you use for the photo at 16:20.? I've been trying to photograph that composition for a year or more.
This is fantastic. Quick question: How do you focus at night? Was it on the pump walls under street light? Thanks
Thank you Chirag! Professor Agar says, "Yes, illuminated walls of pump house were focused on and small aperture used for depth of field." Hope this helps! :) Have you seen any of our newer videos? We're having a contest and encourage you to enter: ruclips.net/video/IPbS7K0Wmfw/видео.html, ruclips.net/video/Qzyfgz0nl0Q/видео.html, and ruclips.net/video/hXJYErB22VY/видео.html.
