Sam is waaaaay to hard on himself. He did incredibly well, given that this isn't something he's practiced and trained his hands to do. In fact, there were some details I liked about his best of the three.
He does also have that bit about "you know, I'm not that good at D&D" despite stunts such as "going to 1 hit point because there was only a 1 in 20 chance of his character dying."
Probably has something to do with his success. Might help him focus on improving and if you're him and think you are good at everything, it would be hard improve. He has said that he loves himself on multiple occasions as well so doubt he is serous.
I like how the show displays the beginner's dread of Sam constantly doubting if he's even capable AND Marisha's advanced dread of "WHAT DID YOU DO PHOTOSHOP WHERE'D MY PROGRESS GO".
Sam's Nott drawing is great. The sunken face with the uneven cheekbones and the nose. It fits her backstory way better than all the fan art where Nott is perfectly symmetrical, cute or even objectively good looking. She has to look a little tragic and worse for wear imo.
The new seating arrangement for having a guest works SO much smoother with babs in the middle! I also think that Sam has a lot of potential since he seems to know what is wrong with his mistakes he just hasn't learned how to process them yet. if he continues to try and learn how to draw i think his biggest obstacle aside from time would be perfectionism.
Sam's doodles and the "I SUCK AT ART" (which he totally ended up not) and the Liam in a heart/the S+L a little further down honestly gave me life. How is it possible that so much blessing can be contained in a single man.
He really did pin point a mid-schooler scribble book to the T. That man may not be a professional drawing artist, but his comedy is worthy of gold. (and by that I mean the balance in it :) )
58:35 I love how Sam goes back in forth between "I'm crap at this" and "I'm great at this." It's so Sam! His final drawing came out so well. He had help but did most himself, and it was great seeing how he just kind of went for it at the end. This was very inspiring to see. Well, done to Babs and Marisha for these episodes!
As an artist myself, this is always so fun to watch. You can really tell Marisha is developing a style in her drawings!! Go Marisha. And honestly, Sam?? This is seriously so good for his first time. Like that is REALLY good. I hope he practices and will gain some security in his work with art. Keep it up guys!
One of the things I love about this is seeing Marisha progress and talk about how she's practicing between shows. It gives this really nice like...camaraderie with the show with those who are drawing along
My one request for this show is that the person switching cameras would be a little faster and err on the side of showing all canvases. This episode is a step forward in that than the past few.
Oh geeze I'm so proud of Marisha's progress, and Sam adds such a delightful energy to pretty much everything haha, that this was by far my favorite episode.
Sam being on here was really helpful. He did all the "I'm so bad" and "sorry" comments so that I didn't have to. It meant I could just focus on drawing.
I love watching you all figuring out that you CAN actually draw, all you need is a little direction. Great job Sam, you did really well!. I kinda want to see Babs teaching the whole cast all together how to draw wire frame skeletons when we get far enough to have full body poses.
Sam's is actually my favourite of the three, the nose he gave Nott was really cool to see as someone with a bump nose! I still really liked Babs and Marisha's, but I feel like Sam got closest to how I picture Nott!
Having been drawing properly for over 8 years now, this series is both frustrating and beautiful to watch, I love to see people start off with art, having no prior experience! It reminds me of back when I was first drawing ♡ But then I find myself face palming at times haha. This was just so fun to watch, especially with Sam's chaotic energy compared to other guests haha
I have to say Sam makes me jealous how well he picks it up especially doing it on paper where you cant easily erase a mistake huge respect looks amazing
I don't know about the rest of you, but I AM LOVING THIS. Babs and Marisha are so fun to watch, and having Emmy Award Winning Sam Riegel on was just icing on the cake. I hope this goes on for more than one season!
Thanks guys!! This segment is loved! Really fun! I like Sam’s suggestion for sure. I’m getting really into digital drawing but I can’t afford Photoshop AT ALL... so I’ve been using Sketchbook. I’m so happy because I draw in realistic lines and learning comic style is killing me. This was a lot of inspiration for me to head into fantasy characters. I love Babs! That’s like, my dream skill level right now. I Need to win that tablet too! I have a Huion tablet right now and feel spoiled on that, but man! I want to draw right in that screen! Thanks for posting ladies! Double thumbs up!
Sams image is really good, he has pen and paper and has less experience! As he said, he can't draw but can see when it looks wrong, Imo that is a good step in the right direction to becoming good at drawing!
I feel like he is seeking more ideas and examples from Bab's drawing than others, but he also is genuinely trying and paying a lot of attention to details. He seems to have a slightly perfectionist streak? I can recognize the feeling: usually he seems so happy-go-lucky but here we see a much more critical side of him and that's actually refreshing to see :)
ok so a bit of criticism: babs job in this series is to encourage inexperienced folk to learn and build courage in their skills. I feel like it doesn't help the case when she's just like "that's wrong" and draws something for them to continue from. It kinda feels like she's not allowing the "students" to do something their own way.. I don't know her and maybe it came across wrong but that's the vibe I'm getting I mean babs is good at art, but maybe that's an aspect of teaching she could improve on. sorry if that sounded a bit harsh, I still like the series ^^
think the problem is she's a better artist than teacher, and the time limit doesn't help. She's internalized everything, so instead of saying "It needs to go up at the eyeline and curve down at the chin" (obviously just making something up here), her reaction is "do this". I think getting rid of the time limit and then having her only explain without drawing on their paper would really help.
I've been an intern teacher. Going to do a study as a full teacher soon. But I've experienced that it's really easy to do the work for them, because that makes the progress a whole lot faster. And if you're not an experienced teacher, then you'll do that sooner. It's really hard to keep your hands off someone else's progress. Sadly if she's doing it for them, then they will not learn. It probably has to do with the short time as well and that she wants to speed up things. But it doesn't really help with the learning process. Aside from that I think she does great on the other aspects!
@@LucilleFlowerFairy Sorry to butt in--I understand this sentiment, but I do think it would be beneficial if there was correction paired with explanation? Rather than just correction/saying "that's wrong." That way they actually know why it's wrong, and they learn something; they also relax more (in Sam's case it was evident that he definitely didn't) because they know the focus of the mistake and can learn from it, rather than just hearing that they did it.
@@thistlepatch I didn't mean it like that. It would be good to make an example. Like, grab a different paper. And show how it is done. But don't draw over someone else's drawing and do it for them.
@@MiaDraws Teaching is pretty hard, especially to stay patient. I remember I had to teach 6 year olds how to fold paper in special figures. They kept asking me how to show how it was done and I just had to fold an example over and over again until they finally got it. Eventually I even stopped giving examples because they didn't even try. Sometimes I even wanted to grab the paper from their hands and do it for them haha. I think as a teacher, folding was the hardest thing to teach. They needed to learn to flip the paper and put the half exactly over the other half and uggghhh so frustrating!! Babs is trying and she does a pretty good job. Just the way to show how it is done and give examples might need some improvement. And yes the gaps are quite large as well, I agree. Sam did pick it up nicely though! He looked well at what babs did and tried to do his best to do it like she did. Marisha is doing great too! She's trying to do her own thing and thats very good! :)
I started doing Orly with Matt and Babs, and was so inspired. This starts and my drawing within 30 minutes is a train wreck and I notice I'm a tense ball of anxiety. Hard no on passive aggressive teacher Babs for me xD
First Impression of Episode: Babs has amazing hair!!! Again! It's pink now! So cool! Makes me want to try a pixie cut (I have never ever EVER gone that short, but man does *she* rock it!)
Based on the heights Sam gave, her original proportions were good as is. The shorter Nott looks close to 3 feet tall, which is supposed to be the average height of a halfling in D&D, so still quite reasonable.
Nystul What Sam said he saw nott as 3 and a half feet tall, so a little tall for a goblin, but still a decent measurement. But then babs makes her shorter, she was accurate before she changed it!
Babs is nice but she's not explaining Sam's mistakes well. It's frustrating because I do the same thing when I teach and it's hard explaining something that seems so simple to the teacher but not to the student.

Sam: "What if I came every week"
Babs: "Maybe, Nott"
Me: Looking forward to seeing Sam every week
Sam's Nott drawing is great. The sunken face with the uneven cheekbones and the nose. It fits her backstory way better than all the fan art where Nott is perfectly symmetrical, cute or even objectively good looking. She has to look a little tragic and worse for wear imo.
Sam: IM NOT GOOD AT THIS
Sam does a very pretty good job for his first time.
Having watched some of the All Work No Play, it seems to be his norm.

its crazy that sam can draw SOOO good for no experience
Sam made a deal with taliesin and matt to use their godly powers to make him good at everything, at the cost of servitude
Haven't watched yet, but I hope Sam pulls out one of those giant novelty pencils at some point.
I totally forgot Sam was going to be in this this week. This is going to be fun fun fun!

Sam doesn't have "zero skill" at drawing! Remember the Fantacore?!?!?!
I own that Fantacore!!! 😆
YES YOU DO! :-)
Oh! And one other little suggestion that I think would really make the show sparkle...
Three Mimosa Minimum!
He also drew all of Vox Machina(somewhere in the 80s of C1) and gave them away as part of his promo..
