1989....6am in a dark illegal warehouse party in Blackburn Lancashire in the middle of winter. 10,000 hot sweaty bodies of all ages, races, class, religion. All together dancing away as one big family at a time of tory party rule, mass unemployment n economic difficulties. No cares in the world. All people together as one big family. How society could do with a revolution such as this once again. Brought together by a common bond of music, love and ecstasy. 😅❤
The musonification of yearning: THAT bassline, the discordant piano marching up and down a spiral staircase, the nagging guitar, the swirling synths, steam-powered drumming by Mr Tony Thonmpson and Carly sounding on the verge of a total emotional collapse... The whole room just spins around you by 4 minutes in. A masterpiece.
Yes, I can remember when I spoke about the dimensions of this tune, my friends dismissed it. I enjoy RUclips for this out of time discussion about what we find joyous
+Joel Etienne You're so damn right. The collaboration of R odgers & Edwards with Carly Simon was a perfect idea & a win-win situation for everybody. I wished they did more together at these days!
This is one of my all time favourite records , and one my mums favs too! Never knew is was Nile Rodgers at the controls.. what a fuckin legend, he really is.
I remember finding this on a juke box in a bar/cafe in England and putting enough coins in to have it repeat half a dozen times! A couple of years later at an event a DJ said he had been asked to play it but didn't have it - I went home and got it for him to plaY!
One of the best things I have ever heard, this is so ahead of its time, it sounds like some disco acid house transition and 82! I mean 1982! thats absolutely fucking mental :-)
Great middle 8 where Bernard comes in with Tony and then the Chic Girls slam it with the 'why does your love hurt so much' chant ... sends shivers down my spine. The instrumental B side is just wicked!
Bernard Edwards playing his legendary 1977 Musicman Stingray bass on this cut with Nile Rogers on guitar. The two CHIC boys both wrote played and produced this track. Its a hugely underrated recording.
This song has everything. Great vocal, great lyric, excellent production and that hook, wow!First time I have heard the 12" in about 15 years. Thanks again for posting.
Yeah it's one of those drum patterns that's pretty busy and quirky but it all sits together really well. Prince's "The Ballard Of Dorothy Parker" is even an even crazier example
According to a tweet from Nile Rodgers a few years ago, this was the first time they tried having Tony Thompson play alongside a Linn LM-1 drum machine. Sounds amazing.
I never had this single Of "CARLY SIMON" "WHY" First i've heard this remix by CHIC.. I have the single of "SOUP FOR ONE" then followed by the entire album when I bought it back in 1982. Brings back pleasant memories of this album as well. 💽💿📀✅👍
Always loved this track, truly outstanding production from Bernard Edwards (RIP) & Nile Rodgers. Love the Reggae feel to this track - similar in style to, say, a Sly & Robbie production for Grace Jones maybe.
Whoa, -0.0db peak, but still in all of its full dynamic range glory. Someone did a great and quite professional job digitizing this! Greatly appreciated.
At 44 yrs old I remember my parents playing Carly Simon specifically "your so vein", but this song here for me will never get old, it sounds like it could have been recorded anytime, I like alot of music, not a big fan of pop music cause these days it all sounds the same like hip hop with autotune, but this right here goes in my Reggae collection. 2018 music is rubbish
Steven Reid I'd like to think music like this will appear again. There is talent out there, but perhaps a lot less heart and soul. People need to try to be themselves and not follow trends or imitate other artists. Fingers crossed anyhow!
@@dlamiss I actually come back and listen to it daily. You can only imagine he probably nailed it out on the second take. Genius, and so sparingly played
I remember the first time I heard this song, back in the day. My friend put the record on, and we played it over and over... 👌🎵🎶 One of my favorite songs of all time.
First time hearing this song but that bass groove sounded like Bernard Edwards from Chic. I checked the discography and I was right...great song and timeless.
One of my all time favourite songs....its just got everything it needs to make a perfect song, and nothing sounds better than vinyl by the way, Thank you so much!!!
Carly Simon a true iconic artist singer songwriter producer director yeah she is a brilliant singer Nd this track is really good disco soul funk pop and she went mega in 1977 when she sang the spy who loved me starring sir Roger Moore as 007 and the great Richard Kiel as villain jaws with his killer shiny teeth !!! Nile Rodgers has also wrote produced her !!!
Imagine playing that are the end of your set ooooft banger for sure mind they used the play it at end the raves early 90s but don’t hear it much now, would happily play that at the start of mine and the end , that baseline is heaven…
The ultimate bittersweet song.
One of the best songs ever....and written by the genius Nile Rodgers.
It’s one her best, I haven’t heard this in years!
Não sabia....top!
...And the late Bernie Edwards
Carly Simon voice, Chic baseline and back up vocals, plus a touch of reggae it had to be a hit.
Top da galáxia!!!
Yes, ideal combination
That bassline ripples like thunder across a tropical sky.....this song is a masterpiece
Bringing back the good memories from the 80s
The great Bernard Edwards
A club in Manchester used to play this at the end of the night ..it just calmed everyone down genius . Top tune .

jonnyo420 Lovely. People didn't hear the ache and beauty in this song at the time....or so it seemed. I did.
Brilliant synopsis

The unmistakable bass lick of Rodgers and Edwards..Genius.
+Joel Etienne You're so damn right. The collaboration of R odgers & Edwards with Carly Simon was a perfect idea & a win-win situation for everybody. I wished they did more together at these days!
+jazzsoulfan Nile on bass, carly's voice...............genuis
Joel Etienne you sir are quite the purist
Pete Mason Negative, that would be Bernard Edward's bass...
They made this song, that heavens. Carly singing and lyrics totally insipid.
Easily the most underrated song of the era....
God there is SO much going on in this song. So many layers/elements firing on all cylinders!
Nile Rodgers to thank for that
This is one of my all time favourite records , and one my mums favs too! Never knew is was Nile Rodgers at the controls.. what a fuckin legend, he really is.
And don't forget the bass player Bernie Edwards please
Flange a go go .

Tune danced to it many times
@@gianpolignano2632 Yes it was a big in the clubs over here at the time.
Nothing can beat 80s.

One of the best things I have ever heard, this is so ahead of its time, it sounds like some disco acid house transition and 82! I mean 1982! thats absolutely fucking mental :-)
Great rave track in the UK back in the day
Yeah end of the long night track....
Great middle 8 where Bernard comes in with Tony and then the Chic Girls slam it with the 'why does your love hurt so much' chant ... sends shivers down my spine. The instrumental B side is just wicked!

This song has everything. Great vocal, great lyric, excellent production and that hook, wow!First time I have heard the 12" in about 15 years. Thanks again for posting.
Oh my that bass line. So sparse yet so incredible. Less is more. The feel. The groove. There will never be another like him!
Spettacolo! Musica d'altri tempi! Mi fa scorrere i brividi giù per la schiena...dal primo all'ultimo secondo!
Written by Chic, but it also hit home for Carly Simon, who at the time was divorcing James Taylor.
THE perfect example of less is more. Glorious!
Perfect CHIC Production to Carly Simon's vocals!!! So un-expected... Amazing!!! Dope AZZ track.... Nile Rogers "Amazing"
IBIZA RAVE LADBROOKE GROVE 87.....Atmosphere was great.... they played this as the sun came up.
Neil Billy bob remember it well !!!
I was there!
But I think it was in 1988
Why does your bass groove so much?
The groove of the Lynn drumm and the 80's arrangements make this track even more captivating.
Yeah it's one of those drum patterns that's pretty busy and quirky but it all sits together really well. Prince's "The Ballard Of Dorothy Parker" is even an even crazier example
Jean Bruce Majorca summer 1982 !
