How to remove a name and number from a football shirt

  • The nature of football is that players move from club to club. This often leaves supporters with replica shirts with unwanted players names and numbers on the back, this can often be expensive and once the player is gone the shirt becomes redundant.
Here are 3 methods on how to remove those names and numbers and make the shirt wearable again.

Thanks for posting, just removed names and numbers off two old shirts with felt lettering done by the football club using the iron method, carefully applying heat straight to the lettering slowly peals them away and lifts the glue residue also. Def one for the less heavy handed but does work nicely, thanks again

I have to tell you- THIS IS BETTER AND QUICKER: I JUST did this and it worked PERFECTLY- take a steamer and apply it directly to the letters/logo that you want removed, repeatedly brush over and over and eventually you'll see the material start to peel and roll right off!!! I figured it had to do with heat and after trying several other ideas, I saw my wifes steamer across the room and I'M TELLING YOU- IT'S AMAZINGLY FAST AND EASY! Anyway, give it a try, let me know.

    USE NAIL POLISH REMOVER
if you use heat you run the risk of burning your shirt or permanently melting the letters on your jersey
    STEPS:
    1. acquire nail polish remover and cotton balls
    2. DAMPEN cotton ball (you'll need a good bit of it)
    3. FROM THE INSIDE OF THE SHIRT rub where the letters are, if you rub from the outside you can bleed the ink from the letters onto your shirt and then staining it (i learned this the hard way), from the inside you can get to the root of the glue much quicker
    4. rub until the area of the shirt is damp with the nail polish remover
    5. once damp remove letters by GENTLY rubbing the corners (rubbing too hard will make ink from the letters stain your shirt), it should come off easily. If it does not come off easily use more remover and repeat the steps above
    6. wash your jersey like you normally would
EXTRA: if you stain your shirt you should be able to remove the stain using conventional methods

  • @sexydoughnuts

Hi, I think it should be possible using this method, you may need to apply a little more heat/pressure, but be careful not to burn or mark the shirt doing it.
I have heard of spraying carburetor cleaner (get from halfords) on the reverse of the name/number, this works by melting the glue, and it might come away a bit easier, but it does leave a smell and possibility of a stain. All the best.

The logo was flock printed (same technique with player's name at the back).
I recommend this technique but be aware that there will still be a tiny tiny tiny barely noticeable mark where the logo used to be. But even though, I really prefer my shirt now with no commercial !
    Thx again

  • @sexydoughnuts

Not really sure, I haven't seen the new shirt with Wonga sponsor up close. If it's a felt like material, you could risk it, if it's a plastic type of print it may not work too well and end up ruining the shirt long term.

    Hi !
I've tried your method with the front sponsor "betclic" of my 2011 olympique lyonnais football shirt.
It worked pretty well with the iron.
Almost no residue, the only thing is that the fabric become a little bit slack where you use the iron but it's barely noticeable.
I've put the shirt in the washing machine hoping that it will solve this issue.
Anyway, thanks a lot, great tutorial.

  • @noway2570

methylene chloride is a solvent specifically for the removal or vinyl-based adhesive iron-on graphics. it takes just mere seconds to remove the graphic AND the adhesive. it loosens the bond of the adhesive.

Did he mention what setting the iron is suppose to be on? Low or hi or about what temp?

    • @ScheherazOdd
      @ScheherazOdd 8 лет назад

I would suggest starting at the lowest setting on your iron. If that doesn't have an effect, turn it up to the next setting and try it again. Repeat until you notice that the lettering/image is starting to pull away, and once it does, use that setting on the rest of the shirt.

I can make a video response if you want so you can help to see what I'm talking about, the number is originally yellow, I have a barcelona home jersey, but on the blue stripes, the yellow of the number turned green, and on the red stripes it stayed yellow so it looks dumb

To be honest I haven't tried that, it would be a trial and error I think, some may be easier than others as some are printed, whereas some are raised felt. Would recommend buying a shirt with a similar type of sponsor from a charity shop/car boot and trying it before actually doing it on your own shirt. Let me know how you get on.
