"All the prophets had the Melchizedek Priesthood and were ordained by God himself.” (TPJS 181).
"What is the new and everlasting covenant? I regret to say that there are some members of the Church who are misled and misinformed in regard to what the new and everlasting covenant really is. The new and everlasting covenant is the sum total of all gospel covenants and obligations, and I want to prove it. In the 66th section of the Doctrine and Covenants, verse 2, I read: 'Verily I say unto you, blessed are you for receiving mine everlasting covenant, even the
fulness of my gospel, sent forth unto the children of men, that they might have life and be made partakers of the glories which are to be revealed in the last days, as it was written by the prophets and apostles in days of old.'156. 14 More definitely stated is the definition of the new and everlasting covenant given to us in section 132 of the Doctrine and Covenants. Now I am going to say before I read this that marriage is not the new and everlasting covenant. If there are any here that have that idea I want to say that right to them. Baptism is not the new and everlasting covenant. Ordination to the priesthood is not the new and everlasting covenant. In section 22 of the Doctrine and Covenants Lord says that baptism is 'a new and an everlasting covenant, even that which was from the beginning.' Marriage in the temple of the Lord for time and for eternity is 'a'new and everlasting covenant." (Doctrine of Salvation; Joseph Fielding Smith)

Great discussion. But I have to disagree with the statement that "there is nothing you can do to increase or decrease God's love for you. The only thing that changes is your experience of that love." Are we really to believe that God loves Satan just as much as he loves Jesus? I think our submission and obedience to God has a huge impact on his love for us. God loves virtue and so when we become more virtuous, he loves us more. Sure, God may have an endless and unconditional baseline level of love for all his children. And we can't change that through our disobedience. But I think the scriptures are clear that God's love and the way he manifests that love to his children increases as we become more like him.
I guess, perhaps, it really matters how Todd is defining the word "love".

1 John 4:19 We love him, because he first loved us.
      Don’t confuse love with “favored”
1 Ne 1:1 …having been highly favored of the Lord….
There are many other verses to study this principle of favor.

In Hebraic thought, there is a distinction between universal love (ahava) and covenant love (chesed). Undoubtedly, God has infinite, eternal love for all beings, despite our choices. That does not mean that we will be the beneficiaries of covenant love, however. I will say this - submission and obedience are key, but His grace is what saves and exalts us.

@@coreynasfell1095 so does God love Satan just as much as he loves Jesus, but he just favors Jesus more? Why doesn't he ever refer to Satan as his beloved son?

Good question, however this leads to the realm of conjecture….
Lucifer is a common enemy. But the God of love commands us to love our enemies. Surely because he has full capacity to do so himself.
Does God just stop loving the son of the morning. Did not the heavens weep over him? D&C 76:26
Why weep save it be for pure charity?

@@coreynasfell1095 I wasn't questioning God's love for everyone. I just believe that he loves those "who will have Him to be there God", and who love and serve him with all of their hearts, more than he loves those who murder babies, for instance. This makes perfect sense to me and I think it is backed up abundantly in the scriptures.
