The Bolshoi Ballet's 11 Prima Ballerinas 2017

These are the 11 Bolshoi Ballet Prima Ballerinas as listed in July 2017. I see that since I made this video about 2 weeks ago, Alexandrova & Kaptsova have moved from the list of Principals to the list of dancers "working under contract". Could someone please explain what "working under contract" means & why they have moved to this section? Please note that the list is in alphabetical order & that this is a tribute to the greatness of each ballerina. It is not meant as a critical comparison, so please bear this in mind when commenting. Here are the ballerinas in the order shown in this video:

9. Anastasia Stashkevich - The Flames of Paris Variation 14:49
10. Yulia Stepanova - Lilac Fairy Var. - Sleeping Beauty Prologue 16:01

Am I the only one who watches the people in the background, and is amazed at how they stay in such positions for so long? Staying really still in a perfect baller pose, with your arm gracefully up in the air, for a long time, is a lot harder than many people realise!

I was open mouthed watching this. Each one's perfection is jaw dropping. Can't believe Zakharova is just one among several superstars at the Bolshoi. Thought she was singular; this video was eye opening. The unpararelled training at the Bolshoi is breathtakingly displayed in the finished product.

Correct! The teachers give NO EXCEPTIONS EVER! School of hard knocks if ever there was one. If someone cries during ballet school practices or in rehearsals, they are probably sent home for good as there are limitless other little hopefuls ready in as instant to take their places. Sad but totally true. Unfortunately this hard stance prepares the dancer for the REALITY of their profession.

Sylvie Guillem is even more stunning in this role - her arms and hands much more expressive.

The Russian ballerinas embody all the power, poetry and overwhelming beauty of the ballet!...In my opinion, NOBODY CAN COMPETE WITH THEM!... They Have tradition, great dancers that teach them and great schools... BALLET IS A TREASURE IN RUSSIA!...That's that..........................................
I am grateful that many of the greatest have brought their training to the States. The technique is so lovely and precise.The details.

Supreme dancers!! however, a dancer's life span is shorter than premier footballers for example! Amazing dedication for such limited time! But thank you Bolshoi Ballet for your commitment to showing the world the greatness of dance! Long live Bolshoi Ballet!

Many thanks to those who has made such a beautiful selection in which the dancers rub the perfection especially my favorite, the incredible Zakharova, look at the expression of his arms. Thanks to the Bolshoi for maintaining to the maximum level the art of the dance.
For me personally, Zhakarova is supreme.

Alexandrova is exquisite.. she makes every movement seem completely natural
I've heard that Alexandrova and Kaptsova have basically been removed from the Bolshoi to make way for younger dancers. Being moved to "working under contract" apparently basically means being phased out. It's all extremely frustrating and sad, especially since Kaptsova was at the peak of her career.
Thanks a lot for explaining. It is terribly sad! I agree - Kaptsova was at the peak of her career and so was Alexandrova imo.
I think Alexandrova had an injury and was already considering leaving the company.

Alexandrova left because she was pushed out by a management controlled by people who were jealous of her popularity and talent. In an interview after she announced her leaving she said that people pushed her "out of spite". She didn't have an injury and she left earlier this year.
It depends on who public like.

All ballerinas deserve admirations! My soul and heart belong to Svetlana Zakharova. I adore each her performance on the stage! Svetlana just transports me to another world. I quite often go back years and enjoy the magnificent performance of Svetlana Zakharova and Nikolay Tsiskaridze in A Midsummer Night's Dream. Very rarely can one see such perfection of two dancing bodies, such beauty and uniqueness!
The interpretation of Maria Allash in Legend of Love, scenery, direction and chorography was the best I have ever seen.
It was incredible!! She has such amazing artistry and acting skills. C 💝

Nina Kaptsova is just 38. A most beautiful and expressive dancer, her recent performances were all excellent. It's an unbelievable attitude of DA Maziev.
38 is at the top of the range for ballet dancers. 40 is the very top and the end unless you dance for private companies ( under contract ) if you can bring in the crowds and sell the tickets.
Svietlana Zakharova is 40 years old and Uliana Lopatkina is 46 years old and Diana Vishneva is 43,
Congratulations. They are all brilliant ballerinas. It is difficult to tell who is better because of the different repertoires and roles they dance. Keep going strong and good luck to every one of them.

It's really fun to be able to compare them back to back. Thanks for this terrific post. All are wonderful in their own way. Overall, I would have to say the Bolshoi dancers are doing a much better job than the Americans at keeping the drama, artistry, and musical interpretation IN classical ballet. (The Americans seem more interested in athletic prowess and outrageous extensions and high-number turn at the expense of control, lyricism, dramatic interpretation and musicality. I'm allowed to say since I'm an American...)That is why I keep coming back to watch the Bolshoi (and seeing them live is on the bucket list). May I add they the Bolshoi have improved technically and have cleaned up the open hip arabesque thing - which I never thought very attractive - they used to do when I was growing up (about 45 years ago...). C'mon America: We have Hollywood, we know drama, we can do better! Abstract and emotion-less movement may work well for Balanchine, but it's not the only way to dance classical ballet, in my ever-to-be-humble opinion...

Russia, and some other countries excel at classical ballet and have the perfect blend of near perfect technique and artistry. America is ok at classical, but we do better at dances with more natural flow, along with more contemporary and jazz elements, alice in wonderland for example. In Jewels, the Ruby roles would fit as well. But no one can quite hold a candle to the grace of Russian ballet.

Wonderful video! Thank you. Svetlana Makhaorva is pure magic. She trained at the Vaganova Institute (school for the Mariinsky) and has their incredible upper body fluidity. She is now at the end of her career. Diana Vishneva is another Vaganova graduate who is on the cusp of retirement. I will sadly miss both of these legendary ballerinas.

Russian ballet dancers are my favorite! Greetings from the USA! American Ballet theater can't compete with Bolshoi or Mariinsky! I got to get tickets to the Nutcracker this year in Syracuse NY because either Bolshoi or Mariinsky is coming to the Landmark theater! It say the great Russian ballet so one of them is coming to Syracuse NY! They came to Syracuse when I was 15 years old my aunt took me
I agree. ABT used to have cream of the cream of the ballet world. Right now any of the Bolshoi ballerinas will be ten times better than ABT principals.
Evgenia Obraztsova and Svetlana Zakharova are the best here. No wonder both of them graduated from Vaganova Academy and started in Mariinsky theater. For more than 100 years only Saint Petersburg dancers were hired by Bolshoi theater starting with Marina Semenova and Galina Ulanova. Kirov ballet and Mariinsky theater did not hire dancers from Bolshoi.
I agree. The other two Vaganova graduates are Yuliya Stepanova and Olga Smirnova.

Shipulina is one of the most underrated ballerinas around I think. Such divine quality of movement.

What a nice video. I like all the ballerinas, of course, all are really amazing. I like a lo Zakharova, for me , the best in the world. Then I like a lot too, Nikulina and Stepanova. Shipulina is sensational and Alexandrova is amazing, and Allash, and Obratszova. They are all so great ballerinas. I think the Bolshoi is the best company in the world.

Working under contract means they are now hired per production, not an official part of the company. For an older dancer, it is a way to retire gracefully instead of stopping all at once. After a while, your body can only take so much each day, and a full-time dancer is often in performance for one show while rehearsing the next one (or more). A dancer under contract can concentrate on one show at a time, and keep dancing for a little longer, if not continuously on stage.
What fantastic dancers they are.

Exquisite technique and such a wealth of talent , the Russian standards unbeatable !
...and just watch the strength in their beautifully arched feet and hyper-extended legs. They roll down perfectly off pointe even in the most difficult steps and during the connecting steps they are almost on pointe. On pointe when they are SUPPOSSED to be!!!!!!

thank you for the amazing compilation. as for your question, as far as i heard, alexandrova and kaptsova were moved from principal list so that younger and more prefered dancers can take their place. i am sure there are more knowledgable people around to explain the situation, but it looks like they were kind of forced out by the management to make place for other dancers

There is something naturally graceful about a small-framed woman (with small feet) that makes the dance so visually pretty to observe!

Of this dias it is Alexandrova , although she doesnt have the ideal proportions required of todays ballerinas she has an aura you cant keep your eyes off of her , She is a very regal , confident and highly musical dancer , There is an authority in the way she balances strength with softness that's unsurpassed . I love her in the Pharaohs Daughter solo which I think show all of these qualities . In past Bolshoi primas I am blown away over Gracheva . If she were dancing on the stage today with her talent , technique and body type she would be on this current list .

Alexandrova and Kaptsova have been removed from this list of principle dancers at Bolshoi. Ekaterina Shipulina is only a year younger than Kaptsova age 41. It is confirmed that Shipulina not long ago gave birth to a baby daughter. The father is the internationally renowned Russian pianist Denis Matsuev.
