I really find it fun watching Chris do these videos knowing that he knows everything in the book, but making sure to not give anything away, even with his facial expressions. But then as soon as Jeremy reveals something and it's considered "public knowledge" he springs into action and we get that deep analysis we all love. Very much looking forward to all his reaction videos that'll be coming out as more is revealed, awesome job!

Along with hiding, Surprise is one of the most often misruled rules of 5E. I've seen everything from attacks 'outside of initiative because you're surprised' to 'surprise rounds' nonsense. Hopefully this stops some of that nonsense, but I doubt it.

      @nyanbrox5418 3 месяца назад +3

@odie4495 spellcasting in dungeons and dragons is uniquely strong and versatile compared to other games
There was no martial/caster divide in 4e, that is what it would look like, all casters are identical, and they have the same number of spells and abilities as every other class in the game.
Oh and then D&D could never print new spells either, only new classes and new subclasses, which I personally hate the idea of
The other way would be what Pack tactics perports, give martials martial slots and martial casting, in super human ways which has no real distinguishing game mechanics to spells
There are ways to differentiate them in other games, but those all have very strict things that spellcasters can and cannot do, and it culls their versatility into the ground
My favourite class is wizard, i would very much dislike that outcome.

So at level 9, a fighter can choose to use a weapon with the Graze property. Which will have an effect no matter what the roll result is. However, on a hit you can then choose to use one of the push, sap or slow. That seems pretty powerful

What they were saying is that you can use a weapon with a property that only works on a miss, which thus does nothing extra on a hit, with the new level 9 thing where you can add a dofferent property if you hit. I'm very happy to hear about Epic Boons and how they work. Them allowing scores to go above 20, but only giving you a +1, means you don't necessarily have to max out your important stat ASAP, if you're playing that far. That means you can be more flexible with the feats you pick as you level up, as opposed to hinging upon Ability Score Improvement specifically.

    • @Shalakor
      @Shalakor 3 месяца назад +3

With all normal feats now giving +1 (as per the playtest), you probably should still be at 20 in your most important stat before reaching level 19, though. Taking the ASI feat for +2 will probably be a much rarer pick in 5.24E than it was before, since feats are still roughly all 5E full-feat power (other than eliminating the -5/+10 mechanics of Sharpshooter and Great Weapon Master) level while also being what 5E players would refer to as half-feats. ...All of that is to say, it's no longer a choice, you can make just abut any fun and thematic feat selections you want and still favor the mathematical side at the same time.

... still think that they could have incorporated the champion into the base kit and give the subclass something new. Increasing the crot range, while nice, only really gives you additional 5% chances. So with a 19-20, you have two 5% chances.
Weapon mastery helps branch the fighter out, but how many players are actually going to use multiple weapons instead of just sticking to one? (Either great sword or rapier depending on build.) Granting the three masteries to all weapons is neat, but diminishes the appeal of mastering the weapons with those traits.
The spell school restrictions I didn't mind because they made sense with the subclasses.
Using two attacks for a 1-2nd level spell, with your limited spell slots, seems kind of meh but neat to me.

I either need to have the enemies be far more numerous than normal just so the combat isn’t a cake walk done before enemies take a turn, or (and this is what I’ve started doing) is making it so enemies aren’t really able to be surprised because they’re standing guard or otherwise aware they might be attacked, so players can start unseen and be untargetable until they’re seen and also get the benefits of being seen for their first attack, but they don’t get an entire round first.

not super accurate to relegate maneuvers to 1 subclass
and to not give fighters many switchable utility/social tricks at each level
and then compare fighters/martials to any caster class in terms of versatility.
even in this edition it still seems fighters don't have many non-combat mechanics for using knowledge that a career soldier or mercenary would have.

I feel them saying they didn’t want to put a bunch of maneuvers on the base class is a little contradictory when they implemented weapon mastery… but it’s not a system just for them, but for all martials. It just seems weapon mastery is a more limited selection and limiting it to weapon type. You could have done the same for fighter base line manuvers. They could have only had a choice of 2 maneuvers out of 5 or 6 pre selected manuvers. The battle master could have just owned that mechanic of the fighter and have a much wider array of manuvers at their disposal. I’m not mad we never got manuvers for baseline fighters, just disappointed. The weapon mastery is still a system a player has to think about, and it adds some depth, it works, just isn’t what I wished for.

I like Tactical Mastery, although it slightly makes weapons that already have one of the three masteries worse for Fighters, as you basically miss out on one Mastery Option. I guess the best weapons to use from that point are weapons that don't trigger their mastery on a hit like Graze or Nick. Lots of fun new theory crafting :) also I'm totally gonna play a Fighter 1/ Monk X with a Nick Weapon giving me three attacks every round at level 2 (unless they change something from the UA so this won't work)

As a mad champion fighter enjoyer, I am completely delighted with the changes. If i wanted to look at a menu I wouldn't have picked fighter, and advantage on athletics checks to my eyes is the kind of versatility I always wanted. I always got tempted by a barb multiclass just for that ability, as it lets you wander around the battlefield basically doing shenanigans. A few rerolls on top and it actually might be worth toppling statues or shove-kiting for example, and to me more attacks = more shenanigans = more versatility. so champ has more than any other option in the game, at least if the fluff-versatility that I enjoy coming up with

I used to play this game called Earthdawn. the way they handled the martial-caster divide was twofold. first off, all classes were somewhat magical in nature, and secondly spells, although powerful, usually took a couple of turns to set up. you might cast a minor spell every turn, or you could work up to a bigger spell that might take 2 or 3 turns before you can cast. things like crits would speed things up.

I would disagree with what you said about 2014 Assassins and the new Surprise. In my mind, 2014 Assassins might actually need to be nerfed because: if I have an enemy roll initiative with disadvantage because of 2024 "Surprise", then that enemy IS Surpised. And that "Surprised" state doesnt go away unless they have some way to change their initiative roll after the fact. So a 2014 Assassin would just be guaranteed critting on every hit all throughout combat.
That's just how my mind interprets/rules the interaction at first glance.

I have to say that I'm a little upset that they opened up the Arcane Trickster's spell list. I kinda liked how playing it had you feeling like a normal rogue but with a focus on illusions, as opposed to just taking all the best spells. Can still be played that way but it's hard when optimizing to not just take all the best spells instead of grabbing a handful of fun illusion spells because you have no other options

They indicate rebalancing and buffing some maneuvers, which I'm a bit confused by. Sweeping Attack has been a joke forever, and the playtest retained it the exact same. If they were aware of that, and agreed it should be buffed, why not do it earlier? There's a lot that could be done with it (scrapped in favor of Cleave mastery, mimicking that effect, do SD to all creatures around you etc.), and I'd expect playtesting to help figure out which direction to take it. Definitely hopeful that they've struck a good balance in the final version, but the playtest material doesn't give me much faith on that.

  • @laioren

I love your stuff, but I'm 100% not a fan of the surprise nerf. It takes like 30 minutes for players to decide on how to stealth and to come up with interesting tactics and placement and to finally make all their stealth checks, and none of that is worth it for enemies getting disadvantage on initiative checks. You certainly don't have to make everything in a game "realistic," but the single greatest advantage in any real-world combat (besides technology) is surprise. So this much of a nerf makes it feel like DMs are just going to say "We don't 'waste' any time on surprise checks, so just rush in and start fighting." Even if they'd granted a reflexive advantage to surprisers and disadvantage to the surprised to initiative, that'd have been better, but dang. First big thing I've heard of in this edition that I really don't like.

I dislike the new 2024 "surprised" rule, which is just disadvantage on initiative roll. I'd hate to see a surprised enemy roll double 15s and beat everyone in the party to the attack. I'd rather see it be -X to initiative, meaning that if surprised, there is a good chance that some of the opponents will beat the surprised enemy. So what value for X would be appropriate? I don't know. Or maybe have the surprised entity be affected like Slow for the 1st round?
Right now I'm thinking that the entity that is surprised could be given an option: Take a 1 on initiative and act normally or roll for initiative normally but suffer the affects of Slow for the 1st round. This gives the affected individual a tactical decision to make based on their immediate assessment of the situation. I'd like to play-test this at some point and I'd love to hear alternate suggestions.

One theme that I think is a bit... hm ... not sure how I feel about this: Every expendable resource (second wind, sneak attack damage dice, Ki, ....) now us universalized. Now every class can now do... pretty much anything. I feel like that steals the uniqueness of classes a bit cause if everyboda can do anything, then noone is really special. So you just end up with one or two classes that you can just optimize the shit out of and... thats it.

I don’t think I’ll ever play a fighter. Why on earth would I ever play someone who bonks someone with a stick. In a fantasy game. I want magic. I want all the magic. But. There is an argument to be made that it’s a good thing a low complexity class to exist. I wouldn’t ever want it. I don’t believe Chris would ever play it. But there are more than a few players out there who don’t want to get down and dirty with the rules of metamagic or 790 different wizard spells. They legitimately just want to run around with their friends and bonk shit with a stick. And that is absolutely valid and it’s important that it’s there.

I was hoping we finally got an actual surprise round to ACTUALLY have useful asassins. Besides, if players getting surprised makes them sweat, the better, it adds depths to the game IMO. I love the new barbarian subclass, and the weapon masteries are cool, but i feel like most of the changes they did that are not popular houserules are a step back, in the cool factor at least

I really find it silly that the level 9 feature is linked to weapon masteries. So now I never want to be wielding a weapon that inherently has one of those properties.
Just give it as a feature independent of weapon properties. "When you hit an enemy with an attack you can choose to:
    - push it 10 feet
    - give it disadvantage on the next attack roll it would make, that wouldn't otherwise have disadvantage, this benefit is lost if the enemy does not make a qualifying attack before your next turn
    - slow it 10 feet."
All these stack with weapon properties. Now I can go all in on pushing, or I can push and slow etc.
Anyway, pity they did it like they did.

This would make the champion a more versatile fighter to go with the theme that they are the most fighter fighter sub class. You could change from a more offensive fighting style to a protective fighting style to defend an important npc, or to an archery fighting style if you are planning an ambush, essentially your fighting style would become like a prepared spell.
