    As I've said several times, Bojack has to be animated because no one would watch it if it were live action; it would hit too close to home and it would be too particularly depressing for most people. The mask of the animation is brilliant for this reason! Plus it's great for all the puns

Do you expect a teacher who is in charge of all the shit students are going through in the already shitty school to chase after a student -which will look very strange- that has given him half a story. I like how in Bojack Horseman when P.C. says "you should've stayed" and Ralph is like "you told me to leave" and it's true. You shouldn't expect people to do the opposite of what you say just because of the situation that they have no idea about.

    The #1 thing I've learned from Bojack is that not everything in life needs "closure". If you fucked up and ruined a relationship, it's sometimes best to just learn from your mistakes and move on instead of trying to fix it and potentially making things worse.
    Or on the flip side, revenge is a waste of energy. Bojack finally got "revenge" on his mom, but it only made him worse.

  • @swifty1147
    @swifty1147 6 лет назад +289

    I noticed that after Butterscotch passed away, Bojack lamented to Beatrice that he had so much to say to his father, thought he had the time, and missed his chance forever. With Beatrice, his main goal of getting her lucid enough was just to tell her everything he wanted to say since she won't be alive much longer, and he'll miss his chance just like he did with Butterscotch. I honestly thought it was pretty touching and beautiful that he willingly gave up that opportunity to comfort her instead, despite everything, giving her a moment of happiness with this fantasy of eating ice cream with her family, all happy instead of the tragic truth, even though he didn't know that truth.

    • @damonhinson4005
      @damonhinson4005 6 лет назад +26

      Hate to kill the good times, but there's a small depressing detail that people seem to miss in that scene. Bojack tells her they're eating ice cream and asks her if she can taste it. If you pay attention you can see her struggle to describe the taste because she has never had any before. That question brought her back into her depressing reality, sort of.

    • @swifty1147
      @swifty1147 6 лет назад +25

      I still find it pretty touching, he's created a fantasy for her where her family was alive and happy and was free to eat ice cream. When she struggled to describe it my heart sank for a moment, that she would break down to the crushing reality, but she just let it go and believed in her fantasy that it was real and as delicious as she imagined. That's how I interpreted the scene anyway, but it's more Bojack's gesture that I found moving.

That at anytime they'll turn against you. That you don't deserve happiness or love. You just feel empty and false yourself, because in reality your the one who doesn't love you. Your the one who doesn't understand why you deserve happiness.

      @@KaneK1234 wtf dude? People do come back from deep depression. Its possible. Bojack said life is a series of closing doors. Which is true. Time's arrow always move forward and the doors that were open will close. To not feel like life is slipping way, you have to make new doors to open. New experiences, new skills to learn. Anything. Take up guitar, or skiing. Seriously. A sense of growth is what makes people happy according to some psychologists. There is only growth or depression, not some steady thing called happiness. Just my opinion. Working on dealing with the closed doors in my life myself. And I have to make new ones, but I'm caught looking longingly at the ones that are closed. Look at Jim Carey's stuff on depression and joy its pretty inspiring.

    I disagree. I don't think the show asks us to forgive Bojack or Bojack's mother because of their past. They show their past so we understand, not so we forgive or show compassion. Bojack never forgives his mother, until she finally behaves like a kind person. The show tells Bojack's past is not a good reason for Bojack should be an asshole, and other people are not responsible for Bojack being an asshole, Bojack is the only one responsible, because everyone is responsible for their own actions, whatever bad their past was.

    No one ever gets Diane. She, like Bojack, is self centered. The whole point of her friend that she has lunch with is to portray this. The way she will be happy, is when she stops caring how others see her on the inside, and focuses on helping others. The only time we see her happy is when she is actually helping kids in Cordovia, and feels unhappy because of the self centered attitude of St Claire, and she sees herself. Because she did not find someone for the prom and so they gave hera hobo to make her like she is unworthy and low as dirt, to make fun of her. To feel useless and lazy even though she is not. If you have been abused in your family, you will feel like you do not have a purpose and down the line you will feel unhappy. She suffered from emotional abuse from them like Bojack. You do not know what you want due to cost and benefits and pros and cons. After she knew that from being married to Mr. Peanutbutter, that is how she reached her despair. Her life is not perfect. She is not perfect. No one is except God. That is why she is not happy. Those sacrafices. She has to take depression pills. She just feels...numb. indifferent. Unhappy. Being smart kills you literally. I am a Diane. I understand her perfectly. Her brain was damaged from abuse. Depression destroys your brain. It was not her fault. I didn't like this analysis. Don't get me wrong it's well thought out but it misses some vital details. For one thing we see Bojack trying to connect with his mother in flashbacks (going to lunch, inviting her to the taping of his show, etc) and all he gets is venom, saying he doesn't try to know her as a person rings false because she didn't want him to know her. The only time we see her acknowledge her faults is after Bojack's book is published and by that point Bojack's in his fifties, it's too little too late. The thing is, I've tried to connect with my abusive mother. She's in denial about what she did to me, and questions about her past lead to her screaming that it's none of my business. Everything I know about her I had to pick up through snippets of rants and conversations over the years and stories from my aunt. Poor Bojack doesn't seem to have even the Uncle he mentioned. I've always been curious to see how young Bojack interacted with his grandparents tho. Did he used to sit next to Honey because she was at least the only adult who didn't yell at or criticize him? Was Joseph at least happy to have a grandson? Like if you want to see that too.

      But in Season 4, with Beatrice being seriously demented, that old personality has been muted. She was a terror but now she's as helpless as a child and can't hurt him anymore. The dynamics have changed, and Bojack continuing to react to the memory of her as the abuser has nothing to do with preserving his mental health ("cut out toxic people" is helpful advice if said people are still being toxic)

    This is a very interesting show, and your video is something I scarily resonate with. Even scarier was that before I opened up my laptop and found this in my subs box I was thinking about my own father.
    I never knew him. I mean I knew of him, but never met him in real life. He was a real bad man, tried to kill my mom twice: first time she escaped with my sister and I (I was a new born) and second time he tracked her down. Mom never hid the truth of him, what he did, or her past from us even as little kids. He was a drunk, a drug addict, and a man who was only out for his own self interest. When my mother filed a restraining order he didn't even try to fight for us.
    I was about nine when I decided to forgive him for what he did. What was the point of hating a man who I never met? I prayed for him all the time, asking God to show him the way and to heal any wounds he had. I wanted him to change his life around not for me, but for himself and everyone around him.
    As I got older I asked questions, and mom answered them honestly. His dad, my grandfather, died when my father was three. He was drunk when he fell through a glass ceiling and bled to death. His mother, my grandmother, was a Sioux native who was taken from her reservation by my grandfather and became pill popper/alcohol abuser. His older brother was a man who was in and out of prison for violent crimes, and his sister was an IV drug user. It wasn't until I was in my early twenties that I truly learned to pity him, as he was set up for failure from birth.
    He passed away in 2011. I found his obituary a month after he passed. He was 55 and was in the hospital for a month with RV failure, mitral stenosis, CHF, and ultimately died of respiratory failure. All of it brought on by year and years of severe alcohol and drug abuse and he died alone in a hospital, gasping for breath. Don't get me wrong, everyone makes their own decisions in life as to how they react to situations when they're adults, but we as parents set up our children with life lessons on how to react. His parents set him up for failure and he knew no other way to break out of that cycle.
    However my mother did. She saw the writing on the wall and made her escape when she could. She raised us with the ability to handle stress without turning to destructive habits, how to deal with difficult people, and how to let things roll off your shoulders. From an early age I decided to let my anger go and direct what energy my birth father let out into something good. I'm now raising my own son with a man who is the opposite of what my father was, and I am happy knowing that my son will never feel the ripple of what my grandfather did to my father, or what my father would have done to us.

      It's a great show.
      But there are so many great shows out there that provide new ideas and perspectives; just take a look at ScreenPrism's other reviews.
      Nothing against watching a show multiple times to find something you previously missed.
      But is there really so much to gain from a seventh viewing?
      Watching the same thing dozens of times can be comfortable since you already grew fond if it, but seems more in a way like clinging to something for comfort the same way Bojack clings to his past, missing opportunities of so much things that could be explored instead.

      @@LinkEX Ist there a series you would recommend instead?

    • @LinkEX
      @LinkEX 4 года назад +1

      @@sadfreak761 Off the top of my head, here are my four top picks:

      *Breaking Bad.* Another series I consider close to perfect.
      (Even if you're not usually into life action or non-fantasy series, odds are BrBa will make you discover an appreciation for this genre. At least it did for me. As the name implies, the MC has a reverse character development compared to Bojack, which can be even more gut-wrenching at times. Nonetheless, )

      *Monster (2004).* Equally great storytelling with believable characters that deals with the question of nature vs nurture. More mystery and less party than Bojack.
      (Although there have been multiple plans for a life-action adaptation, the 2017 series on Amazon Prime is something else. Though judging by the reviews it looks like a promising murder thriller as well, haha.

      *Futurama.* Looking for something more light-hearted? If you like Bojack's character-driven yet somewhat episodic storytelling, as well as it's way of delivering serious topics in humorous or absurd situations, here's another candidate with smart writing. Despite the premise of taking place in the far future, it manages to illustrate timeless struggles and cultural dynamics that range from everyday life to existential philosophy. (The writers have actual math and physics PhDs, so the scientific references are generally smart and far more than mere technobabble.)

      *Can't Hurt Me.* Lastly, if you're looking for a different medium and genre entirely, there's plenty of amazing audiobooks that you can listen to while doing chores.
      I'm currently listening to Can't Hurt Me by David Goggins.
      This guy had a pretty rough childhood as well. So if you're looking for a real-world counter-example to our fictional horse with a shitty upbringing, this guy is as inspiring as it gets.
      (As with every autobiography, it is probably 'embellished' to some minor extent. But I'd consider that artistic liberty to amp up the delivery.
      Last but not least, that guy is a Navy Seal, ultramarathon runner, and word-record holder. So as opposed to many motivational coaches, this guy definitely puts his money where his mouth is.)
      Do you have a series you could recommend in that same vein?

    I was well aware of everything my parents went through as a kid. And they were aware of what their parents went through, but it didn't make them less abusive. or justify their abuse. They chose not to go to therapy.
    In fact, I probably gave her more compassion than she ever gave me. We have to be careful not to have more empathy for abusers than the abused.
    I'm kind of tired of people telling me that I have to forgive my abuser because I don't. I don't have to do the emotional labour of that relationship.

    • @oncefighting
      @oncefighting 3 года назад +3

      I wasn’t as abused as bojack or beatrice but I agree. Some of my problems stems from my parents treatment towards me as a kid and its really hard to excuse everything they did just cause they suffered through the same thing and so did their parents.
      They could’ve reflected on themselves and chose to be a better parents but.. they didn’t. I also think that even if we break the generational curse of this cycle of abuse, our kids will suffer through something terrible too. Or maybe I’m just thinking too much about it just cause I also have childhood trauma from school that haunts me to this day.

    • @wordforger
      @wordforger 2 года назад +1

      Exactly. You don't have to forgive people who mistreated you. If they screwed you over, it's on them to fix it, not on you to forgive them for it. If they feel guilty but make no actual effort to be better then you do not have to forgive them. Did the person who made this video NOT see Bojack's attempts with Herb Kazzaz? An apology is meaningless if it's too little too late and with no actions behind it.
      At some point the words "I'm sorry" become meaningless because it's clear the person is just going to keep doing as they've always done. That's Bojack's main problem. He may feel sorry. He may apologize. But then he'll fall right back into the same old pattern of behavior and ruin someone else's life irrevocably.
      In the end the only way to escape that cycle is to cut that toxic person out of your life and work on yourself. That's what everyone around Bojack has done, and the thing Bojack never fully managed.

    This is great advice for I hope a majority of cases in relationships, but I'd also like to add, some people can not see their own flaws. Even if Bojack could know what his mother went through and understand, if she isn't willing to see what he can see in his own life, that he was raised by abusive people with their own baggage, then that's a toxic person who isn't your responsibility.
    Some people are Frodo, others are Gollum and it's very important to see which one the person is before you waste time trying to repair something that will always just fall apart and chip away at you.
    My mother has NPD. She's extremely damaged as a person, and she can not see that she has faults. Everyone else is the problem, not her. I know this is because of her less than stellar, but socially accepted type of upbringing (abuse can be subtle, it can be the little jabs and derisive moments that make a shit person, because it's light enough to not be obvious later in life just how damaging it was. Many heavily abused people get out, because at some point they see others with healthier relationships and question their own. Subtle abuse that chips away becomes normalized easier and therefore is harder to see, both in and outside of the situation.) I have to cut her out of my life. I tried to have rules for treating me as person, things she does that aren't okay, but she can't keep boundaries, she can't understand and me asking her to look at herself and what she's done is like asking someone with out legs to walk. She doesn't have this capacity and it's not fair for me or her to continue trying to ask for something she can't give, love, acceptance and forgiveness. She also has nothing to offer but drama and martyrdom. it's a sad creepy existence that isn't my responsibility to deal with. She will likely die alone and bitter and there isn't a damn thing I can do about that. I tried, I wasted 23 years trying.
    I feel for her, I empathize, but it's one sided. I see, while she is blind and always was and she's proud of her blindness. She's a Gollum who sometimes wears mask of Smeagol, but Smeagol is dead, because for her, her Smeagol never even existed. There is no secret good person underneath such damage, because that person never got to develop. A person lacking person hood is a husk with the face of a normal person. It's important to see the rare cases where there is no one better underneath, there is no one to save, it's just damage, anger, fear, denial and abuse. Some personality disorders effectively cause this, and many are entirely untreatable, To date, there is no person who had diagnosed NPD and ever got cured, or even really all that much better. It's an irreversibly damaged person. And it's not anyones responsibility to futiley try to fix something that actively tries to break itself.

    Great analysis; I hadn't thought of it in terms of addressing the past to make forward. It makes sense, though, given the theme of history repeating in this season. I think Hollyhock has a more important role than you acknowledge, though. I think the reason Bojack is FINALLY able to make some progress with her, is that he sees a lot of himself in her. He doesn't want her to make the same mistakes he's made, and... It's less about redeeming himself for his own sake, and more about helping someone he cares about. He's not so hung up on what success or failure says about his character. Anyway, thanks for getting me hyped for season 5! Well, more hyped.

    This show made me feel better about life than years of visiting my therapist ever did. It's like while I was watching this show my somewhat lingering depression was gone because I can relate to how much everyone struggles with their mental issues. Todd is probably the most relatable character for me. I constantly distract myself with media to hide how much of a worthless burden I really am in general. Just like how he constantly gets into shenanigans to hide how much of a slacker he is.

      The way i felt about reading about your mother denying her abuse in your later years as an adult.. it felt like i was reading a chapter out of a book that depicts my future. It is already happening. This show is so amazing at not just creating funny raw content, it depicts mental health so accurately, it hurts even with my detached emotions. It brings real life everyday people with different backrounds together with impecable story telling and writing, i could just see myself in so many characters. This and Rick & Morty have to be my favorite adult themed post modern cartoons, their depth and originality is what intrigued me, the characters and emotional storylines is what entertains me and keeps me hostage. Tv shows and movies as brilliant as this show always serve as reminders as why i love movies ect and writing so much.

      I have asked my mom about her childhood. She says she had a good relationship with her mother and grandparents. She and her siblings grew up without a dad and times were rough in her old country back in the 80s. Not sure how she learned to be an effective manipulator.

    god i wish i was able to do shit like that however my mom is a lot like Beatrice in so many ways.
    she did so many drugs that ruined her mind by the time she hit her 40s so she can’t even remember something we told her a second ago, let alone remember her past.
    so even if i wanted answers i could never get them from her,
    honestly this show has helped me open up in my thoughts about a lot of things and i relate to bojack in a lot of ways, aside from the fact that he drinks and i don’t even touch the stuff.
    honestly this show definitely makes you think in a lot of ways, and i can’t wait to see more from it, something that helps bojack become happier somehow maybe even.
    either way i’m gonna continue watching regardless.

    Although I perfecly know that part of BoJack’s unhappiness is due to the way Beatrice raised him, I cannot help feeling bad for Beatrice due to her childhood trauma. After her big brother died in WWII, it’s shown how her mother (BoJack’s grandmother) cared so much for Beatrice’s brother till the point she started to behave strangely, ending up with that “lobotomy” (or at least that’s what I remember it being) operation. Afterwards, Beatrice’s mom tells her not to love nor care for nobody the way she loved Beatrice’s brother never. That’s why I emphatize so much with Beatrice.

    Okay so. On Bojack's relationship with his mother. I find it incredibly damaging to say that we should try to see things from our abuser's side (like his mother, for example). SHE ABUSED HIM! What miscommunication is there? What does understanding matter when he was brutally psychologically abused and neglected as a child? As someone who studied psychology to try to understand her abuser, I think this is such horrible horrible segment. I understood, eventually, why I was abused and where my abuser came from. Did it matter? Absolutely not. I'll be damaged for the rest of my life, they ruined me and I'll be forever trying to keep the pieces together. Bojack, with regards to his mother, was perhaps a little too generous but I know where he comes from at least. Loving her, wanting her approval when everything she ever was to him was a trainwreck. But her having been abused herself doesn't excuse being a monster. Her shitty life isn't an excuse to treat the only thing she really has like absolute garbage. In real life, past abuse doesn't excuse the abuser. That holds true here. "Understanding" your abuser doesn't do anything, doesn't change it. And they don't deserve for you to try.

    I commend whoever put this piece together for what seems like a lot of work. Good for you for taking the time to sort out your thoughts. My impression of the central idea of this video is that it missed the point of the point of BoJack Horseman, but in a really thoughtful, caring way.
    My reading is BoJack Horseman describes some hard truths that may not be so popular in therapeutic circles. This video's narrator seems to hold the relatively optimistic truth of there being healthy responses to family trauma that lead to enhanced feelings of happiness; she mentions taking the opportunity to talk to elders in your family to get a sense of them as whole people rather than as perpetrator's of one's own soul damage.
    I find it interesting that the therapists we see in Season 5 possess many suspect qualities. Diane's therapist of many years both dumps her for BoJack (uncool) and routinely violates her clients' confidentiality.
    I'm not sure I see the point of looking for messages of hope from BoJack Horseman. That seems a little too optimistic, insufficiently paradoxical, to resonate with the true spirit of the show as I see it. Nonetheless, I genuinely applaud your effort to construct an argument that you present on youtube.
