If you are watching this vid because you just got an Omnibot and you need new tires, I highly recommend the ones that Randi is selling on eBay. I just ordered a set to restore my rare MKII and these are better than the originals! They are going to last a very long time and the grip on them is better than the originals, too. There are 3D printed versions on eBay, but there is no way a 3D printed version is going to last as long as Randi's cast versions will. They are definitely worth the little extra cost.
I like them so much, I will probably slowly work my way through replacing the tires on all my omnibots with these new casts.
Thank you, Randi, for making them available.
what is name of her eBay store?
You are so badass! I just picked up an Omnibot from a garage sale; I really only clicked on your video to find out if the replacement batteries on eBay have to be modified to work, but ended up watching the entire video because your work was so fascinating. Now if my guy still has issues, I’ll know how to fix it! Thanks for the awesome vid.
Thank you very much, and what a sweet find. Why don't I ever find stuff like that a garage sales?
Randi Rain Garage sales are like dating; for every 10 duds, you may find 1 good one. LOL. Just have to get out there!
Randi Rain Also, I just realized he’s missing 3 of his wheel tread rings! ☹️ Are you still selling them, by chance? (That was also brilliant, btw!)
@@steven_ryan - 10?
@@steven_ryan - I have the mold and will be making more soon. Right now I'm making Omnibot 2000 tires.
Well done! I just found an Omni last week. Just like you I’ve wanted one since I was a kid and now I own one. Will be taking a similar route to refurb.
Thanks for the vid!
Thank you. Hope you get it going.
I just downloaded your tire stl's from Thingiverse, and I'm FDM printing them in grey Polyflex TPU-90, solid with no infill. Honestly, in terms of color and material they are almost spot-on for the originals. I'm sure for the amount of use this ageing machine will get, they'll be hard-wearing enough. Thanks so much!
Hi Randi Rain, I Love Omnibot. I was in Saudi Arabia back in ‘85. I ve always Wanted to have Onel. I remembers my supervisor have One and I envy him. By the way you are great in refurbishing tops, I admire you !
Thank you very much.
Absolutely superb, great refurbish, you must have been very pleased with the results, I enjoyed watching the Omni's make over and being rightfully restored to good as new.
Glad you enjoyed it
Finished the video and you obviously got a manual, Ha! You are truly a wonder, Madam! Wish I had your fix it/refurbish knowledge!
Ah.. Shucks. Thank you very much... but I am much older than I look. 47 if you really want to know, and I've been building and making stuff my whole life. It's what I am best at.
Still very impressed whatever the age...loved the light bulb trick also! I'm an entertainer also, a Sinatra style singer, but you are indeed unique!@@RandiRain
Nice refurbishing. Kinda like converting it with all new solid-state circuitry and stuff like that.
great video where can i get wiring from the battery to the back insert of the robot
Just buy a power cord that that has the plug and cut it off. Buying just the plug will cost the same.
@@RandiRain do i run it from positive post on battery. nothing gets attached from the negative post?
thank you for reply
@@karlnielsen4035 All Tomy products are center negative. That's very important. Because most of American products are center positive.
thx for the info . i just need to know with two posts on the battery am i just running one wire from battery to robot and which post is it from
The Sears catalog is where I drooled over the Robot.
Great video..Got one off ebay everything works but the cassette player and the battery section for the clock has two broken negative battery terminals..part of them are missing.. i can see part of them..i have no idea how to repair them..Any helpful hints? Also were can i find a replacement battery with that plug that connects to the robot?
Any advice would be most appreciated.
Check out my other OmniBot, Robie Sr, and OmniBot 2000 videos. I remake the battery terminals in a lot videos. Somewhere I explain it, I know. As for the battery, you just have to buy it on ebay and put your own plug on there. Just do a search for OmniBot battery. They still make ones that work.
@@RandiRain thank you..im just hesitant to open up the robot to make and install new terminals as im not to knowledgeable when it comes to things like that..is there a way to make the repair without taking the bot apart?..As for the battery do you have a tutorial video as to how to make the plug onto the replacement battery? Thanks
@@gfan1972ss TOMY products are very well thought out and straight forward. They're very easy to work on. Like I said, I have several videos on the OmniBot range. The Robie Sr is just an Omnibot with a Hearoid head. The Omnibot 2000 is just an Omnibot with a bigger head, arms, and drive train. Check out my other videos. They go into batteries, terminals, taking it apart, etc.
awesome videos, awesome channel! do you think i could safely use a plastic headlight restoration kit on the dome?
Honestly I don't know and I've often thought about it. It's not acrylic, I'm pretty sure. I think it's just some sort of polycarbonate. I don't know if it would work, but it's not going to hurt it. I can tell you a light heat from a torch doesn't work, and did very little. That's why I don't think it's acrylic. So a restoration kit can't hurt.
Hello Randi, i just recently bought the Tomy Omnibot 5402, it's in rough shape and the plastics are all yellow, I'll be following your directions on retrobrighting, hopefully it comes back like yours did. Although the clear dome on mine has a dimple on top :( tried pouring hot water and pressing it from the inside to get the dimple out; it worked a little bit but you can still see the outline of the dimple on the dome :( any ideas on how to get that fixed?
Not sure... Maybe more heat like from a heat gun, but that could be dangerous.
@@RandiRain i just tried pouring hot water on the inside and let it sit for about 30 seconds, then i used the rubber side of a hammer to gently massage the plastic back to shape.... IT WORKED!! the caved in portion of the clear plastic is now back to it's original shape!
Awesom piece of machine. Awesome fix. Thanks! More power!
Hi, I know this is an older video now, but I just got my Omnibot 5420 and I found one of the brown capacitors was loose. How do I wind and replace it?
I'm not sure what you mean. I've never heard of winding a capacitor. Sounds like you need someone to help you with the electronics.
i am still waiting to get one!!
So how did you put the arms in? Do you simply just pop them in or is there more to it?
I don't think I understand. What part? The arms slot in to the body, but I think you mean something besides that.
by chance do you know the gadge/thickness on the brass for the battery contacts? thank you
I forget what they call it on the package, but it should be about 0.4mm or 0.018".
.010 brass sheet. Drill out carefully the rivets and replace with 2/56 - 1/2”L steel machine screws plus nuts and washers. Cut with scissors as per Randi.
Also double over the part in the battery area for good tension.
Tried for years to make tire treads & eventually printed them out of TPU. Very slippery. Quite a down payment involved in using Vytaflex 60.
None of it is cheap, that's for sure.
I would just like to echo Scott's comments below. Just received a set of Omnibot tyres from Randi that I purchased on ebay . If you have an Omnibot to restore I would thoroughly recommend these tyres that Randi makes. Thanks Randi, my Omnibot is now back in action 👍👍👍🙂 Cheers, Alan.
Awesome... Glad you like them. That urethane is some strong stuff. You will be fixing other parts of the robot before you ever need new tires.
very impressive, even more so very time consuming, editing it must've taken just as long! Thanks for filming and detailing the entire process. Subscribed!
Thank you. My videos have gotten better... I promise.
Do you know where we can order replacement domes?
No... I have plans to build a vacuum former to make them, but it keeps getting pushed back. So far, I haven't had the time.
@@RandiRain right on. Thanks for the reply.

Great video. What is the product used to remove the yellowing from the plastic?
It's developer for dyeing hair. Just get the strongest you can. Usually 40. It's the peroxide in there that is being used.
Its usually 12% h2o2. Clairol or get from England.
Agree about 40, a chemical supplier???
Just ordered the wheels from you. Would you have any idea where I might come across the supports for the arms on the Omnibot Jr?

Hmm.. No, not off hand, but I bet you can find one close enough on ebay.
Hi Randi. 😊😊😊How could I fix the "tread" on a Tomy Dingbot..easy?

OK thank you. shipping to Germany possible?
Yes. I can do that.
Great Video! Just one thing though! You have a nice set!
Hi Randi. Love vids watched many times.☺☺ My omnibot 5402 is in all working order, the remote, drive train the cassette plays music. The eyes light, Mic works.....
Yet the program panel stays dark, can't program, as you demonstated...how can I fix, this ONE, issue..that makes it perfect. Thanks. Pls help😊
I would have to look at it again. Not sure what's the problem.
@@RandiRain it works the whole robot..for exception of the programing, display didn't light up do. No program. Now 44 got in original box just recently on eBay all work but....awe program was the best part.
@@phlpsideslinky6690 The clock is powered by the 2 AA batteries. This is attached with the skinny wires going from the back of the robot to the circuit board. Make sure you have 3V there at the connector on the circuit board. The power to the clock is on the black 3 pin ribbon cable coming from the clock and plugging into the circuit board. Make sure that is also plugged in and none of the wires are broken.
@@scottmcdonnell7559 thanks. I'm still confused. Not tech savvy. Lol. Just collector of old robots
@@phlpsideslinky6690 This is a picture of the circuit board. The connector I am talking about is labeled CN3 near the bottom. The 3 pin black cable directly above it is the other connector I am talking about. Wow, thanks
Hello, I also have an Omnibot like this I am working on and I am having some issues. Is there a way to contact you or just post questions here? Thanks, Jason
My facebook pages or my websites all have ways to contact me for discussion. I'll be glad to help in any way I can.
Someone gave me one of these when I was 12 years old in California. It was amazing technology at that time haha!
Aha your comment about the difficult wire connectors probably saved me from breaking the board getting mine out 😂
Good to hear!
Best to unsolder and just hardwire to board and leave enough wire for connectors down road .
Awwww... lovely. I had one and have many memories of him.
Fantastic! Always wanted one too! I may have to hunt one down! Thanks for the video!

@@RandiRain Thank you. Does anyone know the size of the tape deck belt?
I have one sinse 40 years
I enjoyed that refurb! I have a Omni and would like to get him back in prime condition. I also became a new owner of ROBIE SR for $99. But the treads are shot. I don’t have access to a 3D printer, but would you sell those if anyone has asked you?
You're in luck. I am making some tires for someone else and I plan on making several sets. If you're on facebook, I suggest you follow one of my pages and watch for when I have them ready. It will be awhile. I only have one mold and the rubber takes 16 hours to cure. And thanks for the kind words.
Good looking and knows how to fix things.....Great job!! Just got one, going to fix my bot now!
Awesome.. and thanks.
Randi Rain, is it possible to build an Omnibot from scratch using today's technology and maybe a wooden carved frame for the body? I would love to do that but I would want the hands to work on mines if I did do one.
Umm... Technically, of course. It could easily be done using any kind of programmable microcontroller. But if you mean to make all original and exactly how it was done, I doubt it. There is at least one microchip inside that was propitiatory. You would have to recreate that.
@@RandiRain , thanks for your input. I just found your channel and I think it's great. I was 7 years old in 1984 and I always wanted the Omnibot as a child. In fact it was one of the top 10 toys and or games I wanted as a child but never got. Today in 2019 I'd rather build my own considering how simple the technology was for him in 1984 and plus an original is hard as hell to find complete and working correctly. I wouldn't do a 100% exact recreation of him mines would have some major differences like with the following:
1. The colors and the configuration would be the same.
2. I'd change the eye color from red to something else.
3. I'd get rid of that antennae.
4. It wouldn't have a tape deck in his chest any longer but a digital screen and an MP3 player would work just nicely.
5. He would have to have working claws to actually grab things.
6. He would run off of an R/C car battery pack.
7. Digital LED clock
8. Sensor's
9. R/C wheels perhaps 4 instead of 6 or however Omnibot originally had.
10. I like the dome but I'm not too sure how to do one just yet.
But anyway, just thinking out loud and typing. Thanks, you've given me inspiration Randi.
that was awesome, thank you and good work
It seems we are both on an 80's robot kick lately. Working on two Omnibot 5402s right now. Just wanted to let you know that those terrible connectors can be replaced with JST XH (2.54mm) connectors. You can buy a kit of them on Amazon with various numbers of pins. A PA-09 crimper makes working with them easy. The big connector that connects the lead acid battery can be replaced with a two-pin screw terminal. Fits perfectly. Finally, you may be interested in a mod I just did. I installed a rechargeable lithium battery in place of the two AA batteries for the clock. I have the charger wired into the charger for the SLA, so both are charged at the same time. And while it is charging, the clock stays powered, so you don't lose the alarms.
I wanted to update this comment for those thinking of following the above to do the rechargeable battery. On some of the Omnibots, the voltage to the clock is only 1.5V using just one AA battery. On some, you install 2 AA batteries, but they are wired in parallel, so the voltage is still only 1.5V. Some are 3V with two AA batteries.
For those that are 3V, the 3.7V rechargeable battery mod works fine.
But be careful and check! I took it for granted on a Robie Sr. and the clock IC got very hot and made a black spot on the LCD. I assumed it was 3 volt because it used two AAs. Thankfully, the black mark went away after cooling down and the clock still works. So check the voltage first. You can step down the 3.7V rechargeable to 1.5V with a little extra work. The current needed is very little, so even a 1.5V 3 terminal LDO voltage regulator like the MCP1700 will work fine.
I had this and the damn thing never worked
Hi Randi! I am a fan, but not very handy. I would love to buy a refurbished Tomy Omnibot (2000 ideally or 5402) from you, if you're willing. I am a child of the 80s and still love these, but want one that's clean and in good working condition. Please let me know if you would be willing to sell one to me, it would be well loved/cared for. Thanks!
If I had one... All I have is one of each, that are mine, and a junk one for parts.
Hi, there is a great one waiting for you offered by ebay seller CLAIMITAMERICA. Hope you enjoy!!!!!
Good job. 👍
I just saw this video and I thought it was great content until the last minute or so. So irresponsible. How did you let the robot get it's own remote? We must remain vigilant as to not let robots have too much control. This is how Skynet takes over and kills us all. I am looking for the Omnibot and 2000 myself.
I personally welcome our robot overlords.
Awesome..
Great, now I also want one!!!
I have searched everywhere for an answer before bothering you with this question . - -I have a mint condition working Omnibot 5402 never out of the box until today - even when taking the cellophane off the toy still had that new smell. All the rubber on the wheels and claw grip feel brand new with no rot or deterioration. Well everything works on the Omnibot except the cassette deck. I can hear a faint hum when I press "PLAY" so I know it's getting power but the rotor won't turn (neither with or without a cassette). Since the tires and the claw are still fresh I doubt the belt could be the problem. I've gone through the manual step by step several times but: nothing. I got 2 of these Omnibots in 1984. ( one I played with and recently sold, and this one I kept stored away) I had the same issue with the used one as well. CAN YOU ADVISE ME? Thanks for letting me bother you with this question.
KM
My advice is to first check the belt. There's no law that says that just because everything else is good that the belt will be good. You're going to have to open it up no matter what the problem is. I've also done a video on the Robie Sr which is basically the same robot. It's a later video and might be more helpful.
Agree about belt, just replace and clean guides(pulleys) with Q tip and 99% ETOH. This removes any old rubber residue. Also buy some super lube and check all push buttons and Casette trolley so they are freshly lubed. A can of plastic safe silicone applied with a tiny brush on bearings helps. NOT on the surface that the belt comes into contact with. Only alcohol to clean them.
Don’t get lazy , change belt! Also renew surface on the Rubber pinch roller. Apply some rubber Renu on a Q tip and rotate roller against it until clean.
I really wish I could find and afford a bunch of these Tomy robots from the 1980's. For that matter even the toy robots that were copycats and knock offs of these would be cool too. In all the time I've seriously been collecting toys I have only ever seen one in an antique shop. Otherwise I only see them on Ebay or in videos like this. Amazing work making this one live again. On the stickers, have you ever tried glossy photo paper for them? A toy refurb guy I watch uses them to make stickers for toys. In fact he was using them to make replacement stickers for the Maxx Steele Robo Force toys.
I've tried a few things. I've had them professionally printed before.
The guy I mention is Toy Polloi on RUclips. He has a small website and you can download some of his replacement sticker images he's made. I'm going to use his image for the Robo Force stickers to replace the ones my Robo Force robots need. I'm also working on making some replacement stickers for a Mattel Shogun Warrior robot I have that needs a lot of work. But I still have three robots I need to open up, figure out what's broken, and get them back to working order. I just followed you on Instagram and most of my toy stuff is posted up over there.
That was awesome wonderful job!!
this is so goddamn rad, i've always wanted one of these.
Damm you are good. I was too poor to afford one when I was a kid.
Me too... It took me 35 years to get one, and it was broken one.
Very good movie, very good robot...dziękuję bardzo za mile spędzony czas:)
I need a tape player belt :/
www.amazon.com/Blackweb-Bluetooth-Cassette-Adapter-Microphone/dp/B07659T5B6
This works fine to play Bluetooth music
Put it into timer mode and hit play. It will run the tape player head without running the motor if yours still works and has a belt issue. Sounds fine. You can still use it in the other modes but the tape motor will still and may damage it plus is makes a grinding noise.
Go to ebay... You can buy a bag of various sizes of belts for a few bucks.
