  • In this video, I do a quick touch in on the Section 179 deduction since there has been a lot of chatter about it on the internet lately. Yes, you can buy cars for your business and section 179 the whole cost of the car. Yes, the car needs to be over 6000 lbs. But because you CAN do this, should you? I talk a little more in depth in this video.

      Thanks for the great video. Still looking into to doing this. I currently have a truck lease that I write off but Im debating on getting a sprinter van. I have a restaurant and do almost all of my driving for business use. I have a home office as well. Would the best way to do this be to buy the van under my LLC like you mentioned near the end of your video? Then if I ever happen to use it for personal use just claim that as Personal Income use of that vehicle? Also if I eventually retire that vehicle do I have to pay back all those write offs if it’s been more than X amount of years?

    im trying to figure out what 179 is in relation to "bonus deduction...."also to these guys starting up,TAKING TOO MUCH 179 ,COULD MAKE YOU SHOW A LOSS.....it may pay to use 5 or 7 year depreciation .instead...

    Could you choose a less expensive heavy car for retail businesses and deduct that? Perhaps being less suspicious because it does get used for the business a lot

  • @HuskyMike
    @HuskyMike Год назад +2

    One important distinction- Section 179 6000lb requirement is based on the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating- curb weight plus allowable payload) of the vehicle which is different (more) than what the car weighs (curb weight). GVWR can be found in the specifications of the vehicle on the manufacturer's website.
    Question: How does the IRS define "use" of the vehicle? Is it mileage or days of use etc? e.g. I drive the vehicle I use as the section 179 vehicle for 4 days a week for short trips to customers or the bank, PO Box etc and total mileage for those 4 days worth of trips is 50-100 miles. On the weekend, I use it to go camping where total mileage for the weekend might be 200+ miles. For that week, I've used it 4 days for business and 2 days for personal, but total personal mileage is twice the business miles. Which one takes precedence?

    • @Yusuf-ep6yz

    Thanks for this, it is a great explanation and if I hear one more person on Instagram promoting 179 as a way to a "free G-Wagon" I'm going to lose my hair. One question though: if the 179 deduction brings the LLC's income below zero does that loss not pass through to my personal income? And if the business's income and my personal are both wiped out to zero in the first year does the loss not carry forward to the next year? Assume legitimate reasons for all of the above

    I traded a vehicle in that I used the 179 write off for. I made zero on it overall (the new one cost more) but because I had paid my loan down on the old one the amount I traded it in for benefited me in that they put it toward the purchase of the new vehicle. I can find no answers on how to deal with that. Just pay back what was credited on 179 from three years previous?

    My question is, if you buy it as a company vehicle do you have to still pay monthly payments for the whole year and next year they return the money with your taxes? Or is getting paid for then and there and you don’t really pay out of pocket. I have always wondered

    • @kellyanderson3826
      @kellyanderson3826 Год назад

      Your payments have nothing to do with expensing/depreciating the vehicle. Payments are NOT on the income statement - they are recorded ont he balance sheet against the loan. Two separate things. Not related to each other - depreciating and deducting the cost of the vehicle have nothing to do with how much your payments are.

    So 179 can't create a loss in your business income but with partnerships, partnerships are pass-through entities, in this case can you get a deduction on your W4 income? I bought 10k of equipment worth of equiptment, made no income on my business but made 55k at my 9-5, can I take the 100% depreciation on that?

      @Nguyen CPAs sorry, just wanted to clarify your answer to Kyle's question in particular. In the referenced case, you'd advise leveraging BD even though his business didn't generate any revenue? Is it because it's a pass through/disregarded entity that he purchased the qualifying asset(s) through, he would still be able to reduce his tax liability on his W2 income for the full value of the asset?

      I'm not a tax specialist, but I started an LLC, and perform services like yourself. I was able to have them pay my LLCs EIN instead of 1099 to my SSN, this allowed me to do a 179 write off while the company shows profits from the work I do. I don't believe a single self employed person on 1099 gets the write off, I think its for "companies" so you may need to LLC up. Again, I'm probably wrong because I'm not a tax specialist.
