i would absolutely LOVE a video breaking down the style of The Holiday. its one of my favorite christmas time movies to watch, and i rewatch it almost every year 😍✨
I used to really enjoy this film until my then boyfriend broke up with me right after we watched it because "we just didn't have what they had in the film"😂 I was like "it's not that deep but you're clearly not the guy for me"
We love Nancy Myers because her films are welcoming. They are easy but with substance, escapism without the vapidity. They are *agreeable*. The styling of sets and characters is absolutely key to that effect. I remember when my mom would come in as I was watching movies as a teenager -she'd always say "I don't want to watch anything ugly, aggressive, or depressing". I used to think that was shallow and uncultured, but now at 40+ I find myself in that same mindset.
I loveeed the Parent Trap as a kid, Elizabeth James was always so chic but never “sharp/restricted” but classically comforting x I loved that so much 🤍
I think one of the reasons nancy meyer films are making a comback is because Hollywood is in a decline and they stopped making good films so its no surprise that ppl are looking to the past. theres a trend in hollywood where they put out these raunchy, dark, films with a sleek-looking cast that lack talent and its just not working. I miss when hollywood was more laid back and they made more films with substance and warmth. nowadays the films that get greenlit have to have some shock-value, the edgier the better. but nancy meyers told realistic stories in her films that were relatable and heartwarming. also the cinematogrophy: its such a style that is so quintesential of the 90s and 2000s. I think during the mid 2010s Hollywood decided to let go of that entire style cuz I havent seen films like those in a while. nowadays were only seeeing rawnchy comedies, dramatic, romance films, edgy dark films, and lots of comic book adaptations. even the book series-turned franchises are pressured to make the series more edgy and dark.
I agree with everything you said! Just the other day I was lamenting the lack of nice, simple, feel good movies/rom-coms. Modern Hollywood has lost the art of storytelling, it's that simple. And to tell a story you need all those elements that you mentioned are in Nancy Meyers films, the cinematography, the costuming, as well as the soundtrack, good actors and an actual storyline. I miss good movies. At least we can re-watch old ones.
@@frangipanisandgirl I think they also lost their art of picking good talent as well. It’s like nowadays looks trump talent when back then atleast the good-looking ppl they picked also had talent. idk what it is about the 90s and the 2000s but there were so many talented actors that had the look and talent of course now they’re older but Hollywood has done a horrible job at picking talent to replace them. They think if you’re trending on social media and are the subject of countless twitter threads you must be great in the box office. Like Timothy Chalamet. He’s funny but he’s no Mathew Macaunahay or a Jude Law. Same with actresses, or maybe I’m just biased Timothee is literally year older than me but I’m just not impressed with these new actors and actresses they don’t hold a candle to Kate Winslet or Natalie Portman. Another thing I notice was actors didn’t mind joining on small or big. They’d do a big film one moment and a small flick another. They could do a big blockbuster film and small Romantic comedy back to back they didn’t just hold off for a big role so we saw different sides of them. These actors lack so much depth it’s annoying
@Dreamergirl-lx5zb I think the reason you don't see as much talent anymore is because people don't want to part of Hollywood (also the music or model industries) anymore because all the toxicity and horror stories that has be coming out. Like what has happened with Britney Spears, Marilyn Monroe, Brooke Shields, Megan Fox, Aaliyah, Selena Q., Janet Jackson and her brother Michael, Whitney Houston, Judy Garland, Ana Nicole Smith, Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Bynes, Shirley Temple, Emilia Clarke, the Olson twins and Jennette McCurdy. No one wants to be harassed by the paparazzi and toxic stans (Stalker), be sexually abused, deal with the toxic beauty standards and eating disorders, or deal with such a horrible schedule that you have to rely on drugs and medication, or be the next victim of a horrible predator. We saw the power of these predators and how long it took for them to be held accountable, such as R. Kelly, Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, Kevin Spacey, Dan Schneider, and a lot more. How powerful organizations ( scient*l*gy, Nickelodeon,& victims own family selling them out) keep the victims silence by threats, money, lawsuit, NDAs, blackmail or ruining their reputation or credibility.
Ah something good came out of the screen writers and actors strike then. Not everything is so "deep", basically old films are coming back the last year because nothing new has been made.
@@frangipanisandgirl Well, this is just how it is, each generation think that the films/songs of their own time is better. Every single generation is the same.
"The Holiday" I love that movie. And I can identify with both leads. And they don't go against each other. Love that movie! Yes, please, do that video! 🥰
Nancy Meyers has such an iconic vision. I watched this one movie that felt SO Nancy Meyers that 10 mins in I had to look it up, and it was her daughter’s lol. Clearly there was some influence there haha
Loved the analysis. You hit it perfectly when said the outfits were timeless, simple, elevated, and expensive with an undercurrent of coziness. It's worth noting that the costumes share these same qualities with the interior settings that Nancy Meyers is so well known for. Love Affair is not a Nancy Meyers movie but Annette Benning's and Warren Beatty's outfits have a similar feel.
I love Nancy Meyers. The Parent Trap is my favourite film of all time! The twins' outfits are actually my favourite, though. Would love to see an in-depth video on The Holiday around Christmas time
My grandmother went to Bermuda every summer in the 1970s and wore very big, loud, bold, tropical patterns in very bright colors -- orange, hot pink, yellow, turquoise, lime green -- with huge chunky jewelry and big hats. When I hear "coastal grandmother" I think of her.
My mom looked so lovely in whites and creams. It set off her silver/ gray hair beautifully. I tried "cosplaying" as my mom and felt like a marshmallow lol
Please do an in depth analysis of “The Holiday”! 🙏 The outfits in the film look so beautiful. They’re very much 2000s looking yet timeless and chic. The style of the characters adds so much to the general aesthetic of the film and I would love to hear what you have to say about it, from a professional’s POV. Lots of love and support from Guatemala! 🤍🇬🇹
Oh also, in a similar-ish vein (I feel their movies have a similar tone) would love to see an analysis of Meg Ryan’s style in Nora Ephron’s movies, esp in When Harry Met Sally. Ie. what is it exactly that makes her whole look in that film work so well
Aww I’m so glad you got sponsored by Vivaia, I love their shoes. I can wear them all summer long and I’ve worn them for years and they’re still comfortable. Best thing is that I can throw them and the soles in the washing machine x
I absolutely love that did a deep dive on the style in these movies! I’ve always been obsessed with the interior design in all her movies (but particularly these three!), and could talk for hours about the spaces she’s created. But back to clothes-I also noticed how she uses a lot of teal (in very subtle ways) in The Holiday, which is a trick cinematographers use to make the skin tones come alive. The shoes you’re promoting look amazing. I’m definitely going to check them out.
I love this style but it never felt very me. I have a strong earth style root. I wouldn't have expected this to have an earth root but with you explaining how it does, I feel inspired to take ideas from the earth section. I'm a fan of bucket hats and patterned scarves so this feels fun. (I hear stripey scarves will be trendy).
This was great! Would love to see a more in depth video on The Holiday. Also, would love to hear your thoughts on Angelina Jolie's style in The Tourist.
PLEASE PLEASE Do an analysis of Cameron Diaz’s character in “The Other Woman”… It may not have been an incredibly popular movie. BUT her fashion in that movie is styled exactly as I fantasize about having my own style! I’d love to know what you think her style roots are in that movie?! Pretty please. ♥️♥️♥️
Another unpopular opinion: Danny McBride is working with some genius! All his shows are crass but the wardrobe person knows how to capitalize on essences and colors so well, there is a character with a permanent lollipop that I never noticed bc it’s fits so well with his stature and feel❤
Classic movies are the best, especially in the fall and winter 🧡 I guess I need to re-analyze my style roots... I never pictured myself as earth, but I love wearing knits and all things denim. I always thought earth was more crunchy/outdoorsy than what I prefer!
I loooove e Nancy Myers universe and vibe, and I looooove your videos so this was lovely! And informative, thank you. I would be thrilled if you did a video about The Holiday!

Fun video! I do wish you were off to the side so the photos could be a bit larger. It’s probably OK on a computer, but I find them rather small watching on my phone. 😊
Can you please do a Practical Magic analysis? I love the style of both Sally and Gillian Owens (mostly Gillian) and would love to get a better understanding of their style.
I’d love to see your breakdown of the outfits in The Family Stone! Diane Keaton made me think of it lol. Every time I watch it I’m always struck by Rachel McAdams style change at the end of the movie.
Loved this video!! Nancy Meyers movies are some of my comfort films ❤️ do you think you could analyze Annie from Father of the Bride? It wasn’t technically directed by Nancy, but she produced it and I think her style is very prominent!
I still struggle to fully grasp the concept of style roots and which elements belong to each. Like here you're relating knits and practical items to earth but I'm pretty sure you have associated practicality with stone before and it's kinda hard to understand what is mushroom then if most elements are already covered in stone or earth. I feel like sometimes they overlap and it's hard to really understand the system in a way that can be applicable... I wish you made maybe in-depth videos of each root as a basic step before trying to find combinations? Just as a suggestion, it'd be great 😊
Hi! Yes both stone and earth are practical style roots, it's a trait they share - just as mountain and fire tend share a formality and impracticality! But earth is more rugged, more grounded, more natural whereas stone is more of-the-city, more sporty, more urban - I hope that clears up the difference!
@@elliejeanroyden Thanks for replying! It does help. I'm still puzzled about mushroom though. When I see examples I think it's something I'm drawn to, but then I see that many of those elements are also present in other roots so I'm a bit confused 😅
@@eykyrathe way I understand it is that the key word for mushroom is "simplicity". It's very clean lines and simple shapes, not a lot of patterns or crazy colors. In general, I think the easiest way to understand the roots is to describe the elements they're named after and those descriptions would be the style they represent, if that makes sense. For example, mountains are strong, imposing, and rigid. Therefore the mountain style root encompasses elements of strong tailoring, and more traditional styles that give the wearer that air of power. Flowers on the other hand are soft, delicate, and detailed. So, therefore, those are the types of clothes that go with that root.
@@RachaelTheRed I totally get your description and that's how I understand it but that just makes the lines between mushroom and stone a bit blurry like it's easier to tell them apart from other roots but not between each other and it's puzzling because I know that I gravitate towards one of them as one of my style roots but I can't tell which one it is exactly. When I did the exercise I got keywords like "cozy", "comfortable", "effortless" and also minimal in accessories.
