I feel like I should add that the first Creatures game was a huge leap in artificial intelligence when it was developed and long before nintendogs there was the Petz series by P.F. Magic (developed almost 20 years ago and still has an active modding community)
Petz is amazing! I didn't know about it when I made this video, but I've downloaded and played it recently. Creatures too! very important to virtual pet history, maybe I should do a new version of this video?
Then there was 'Black & White' - a god game with a virtual pet at the centre of it. I remember petting my creature; teaching it not to eat people; giving it tattoos... I'd like to play that again but I don't think that EA is going to re-release it any time soon. >_>
If i miss something about early virtual pets (at least the ones i played), is that they feel more like life simulation games. Although early virtual pets can be sometimes some of the least accessible games for someone who starts playing the first time.... Then I realized they were literally just trying to cash in on people my age who have kids seeing it and buying it. - I want to create something in between the first Tamas, Digis, and Gigas and something like the latest Tamagotchi versions. What I have seen from the maker/Arduino community so far is great but I want that original compact package with interesting and strange new features and ways to play.
There's actually a butt ton of virtual adoptable websites out there too. c: Like Flight Rising, Chicken Smoothie, Dragon Cave, Eldemore, + soo soooo soooo many more! :3
If someone is here and looking for a similar game to Tomagotchi from the mid-2000's, I just recently found out that I had an LPS Care For Me Pets! It's like Tomagotchi but the animals (I had a horse) can move around in their 2d world and do activities. Some had straps at the bottom that you could insert into the device and, depending on the strap, the pet could eat or play. There was also a keychain thing at the top and two buttons to the left and right of the screen as controls. Sorry for all the details but I spent a very long time trying to find exactly what I had! Hope this helped!
It’s called Waba and it already release for Oculus Rift and Vive a few years ago. Check it out at waba.pet ! I’m also considering making a virtual pet for AR on phones soon. I’ve already started prototyping some with my team at Cuteness Technology and it’s been really promising!

I use Unity, but Unreal is also really good for VR development. If you're just starting out in game development I recommend Unity, it's easy and fun to get started with.

Jade cocoon (which is actually rpg but you get creatures you can crossbreed), monster rancher, and Tamagotchi are my favorites. I have made two tamagotchi-esque pet games, some failed prototypes, and now back on trying to just make simple tamagotchi-esque with a lot of unlockable creatures. Idk why I keep coming back to such. Everytime I try to make the pet game a bit more complicated, I do not like them.

I bought a Digimon VPET recently. First time handling a VPET in general. I must say: they are *way* smaller than I imagined. Fun as heck, though.

What software are you using to draw and develope your pet? I want to develope for the Vive.
