  • This video explains Construction and Working of He-Ne laser. After explanation of construction, role of Helium in He-Ne laser is discussed. Answer to the question why the proportion of He:Ne is 10:1 is also discussed. Working is discussed on the basis of energy level diagram and at the end, merits and demerits are discussed in brief.

    I always think that lasers are useful (too) because of the energy they create. But how much is the net gain?

    • @EngineeringPhysicsbySanjiv
      @EngineeringPhysicsbySanjiv  3 года назад +2

      Energy is not created. It is converted from one form to other. The efficiency of laser is very low..

    Great video. I have one question though, how come heavy Ne atoms gets excited by light He atom ? And eventhough the energy levels are at same level, does not it means Ne atoms will also require same amount of energy to gets excited because obv He atoms will only dissipate energy equivalent to what they have absorbed as a result of exvitation.

    Great video. I am curious what would happen if partially reflecting mirror is replaced by a plane glass?

    • @EngineeringPhysicsbySanjiv
      @EngineeringPhysicsbySanjiv  2 года назад

      Then photons wont be reflected back, all photons will be transmitted and amplification will stop. So laser beam will not be intense..

    Why metastable state has more life time than other excited state?

    • @EngineeringPhysicsbySanjiv
      @EngineeringPhysicsbySanjiv  Год назад +2

      It is just the lack of efficient processes for depopulating a certain level. For example, spontaneous emission may be prohibited by selection rules, i.e., by certain symmetries of wavefunctions.

    when spontaneous emission takes place between E3 to E2 in Ne atom, then what is the role of emitted photon.

    • @EngineeringPhysicsbySanjiv
      @EngineeringPhysicsbySanjiv  Год назад +2

      spontaneous emission results into releasing the energy in the form of a photon, which is emitted in a random direction and does not contribute in light amplification.

      @@EngineeringPhysicsbySanjiv Thank you Sir. That means photons emitted due to transition between E3 to E2 are incoherent.
