After about seven minutes of torpedoing down a blissfully nauseating slide, you land in a strange rainbow-colored purgatory. The music from long before begins chiming fuzzily as soon as you touch the floor. This time, it seems to speak directly to you. As if it knows you're here alone. Hidden in the incoherent nonsense are... Calls for help? Warnings? Taunts? Enclosed in these walls are just you and this murky waltz. Right?
I won't sugar coat things. I was in a very strange mindset when I wrote this. At the beginning of production, I stubbed my pinky toe so hard that it bent 90 degrees outwards. At the end of production, I had covid coursing through my veins. In short: I brewed most of this up in a cold sweat at 4 AM, and I'm pretty sure the project file is bad luck. So many changes happen between the in-game version & the release version! I basically had to re-mix the whole thing before adding a bunch of new stuff. This was also my VERY first time working with lyrics! Writing something that makes sense would have been a bit too tedious for my liking. Fortunately for me, Level Fun doesn't make sense! I had as much fun as one could have, working on these godforsaken lyrics.
It's been an absolute joyride, seeing everyone desperately scrambling to understand the lyrics (albeit incorrectly)! This update BY FAR had the best reception I've ever gotten, in terms of the soundtrack! This is a huge first for me, in many aspects. But alas... I must let this mystery go. The people must know. The sacred scrolls must unravel at last.

I’ve interpreted the backrooms as another dimension trying to imitate reality but it struggles to do so. Kind of like AI pictures; it’s close but you can sense something off. Similar to the uncanny valley. The backrooms lie in the uncanny valley of reality instead of people. And I think this song does a great job of capturing that with its weird ass lyrics like urethra bugs and chewing on door handles
It would make sense, the whole lore is that the Backrooms was man-made, or at least a place that's taken high inspiration from it. The rooms look like something built by AI, it knows how things look but lacks knowledge of what it's creating. Making all these weird walls, repeated rooms, doors that lead to nothing or something that shouldn't be possible. Then there's also the creatures in these levels that seem to take hold as familiar threats/phobias that people have.
This level having an eye that watches you in every room and won't let you leave (everyone's eye is on the birthday person, and you're expected to have SOME interaction with the guest), the eerie music with people singing weirdly about how the day is about you (When people awkwardly sing happy birthday).

how the two main monsters are the humanoid meat sack with a crowbar (An intruder) and the giant eye that walks down the empty streets (A stalker)

You hear a horror song, or theme it will set the theme for a nightmare but you won't HEAR the music. Google "Cant hear music in dreams" It's possible but rare, you'd be in an out of REM stage. meaning your not really sleeping. I said the same thing, i could swear i heard the Super Mario theme in one of my dreams when Mario was on TV but i had to think about it and the dream was only ABOUT Mario, I didn't hear the music.

Hi, massive music dweeb here, and I happen to really like this song! So, I'm gonna do a quick analysis of it.
So firstly, the instrumental itself. It starts out as this simple, child-like tune, like something you'd hear playing behind a nursery rhyme. Then, very quickly it descends into this slightly warbled and heavy synthesized sound, backed by a low bass. It communicates the "something is wrong just below the surface" feeling excellently. All the while, the more innocent sounding instruments linger on. Its like *the backrooms itself* is attempting to replicate "party music."
Then there's the lyrics, which are mostly like a garbled approximation of some kind of birthday celebration song. Sometimes however, there are moments of coherence, which really carry the song's eerie tone. The highlight for me is probably 2:23, right before the song's final descent. The way "its your day" is switched out for "its your fault" is simple, but it catches the listener off guard and sets the tone for the song's finale, which is much more straight-forward and outright sinister. Its also probably the highlight of the vocal performance. The entire existential rant, the song itself pleading for you to run, and then finally a return to incoherence with "please make sure you sleep without her ankles in your throat."
I also just appreciate the effort to create the song. You very well could have just taken some stock, free-to-use children's music, chopped it up, and thrown a spooky distortion filter over it. Instead you gave us this surreal, goofy, and slightly off-putting work of art.
love this analysis… not many songs that give you this kind of feeling! reminds me of old toys r us or mcdonalds ads for some reason.
I generally love the run refrain, such a raw moment and the just kidding makes it seem all the more wild, this song quite literally sounds like playful insanity and that part is clearly playing around with you as listener, as well. Like its trying to toy with your mind.
The song's cheerful tone genuinely makes me so happy listening to it on repeat, and then the darker elements mixed in just make it that much cooler.
This song feels like an insane person in the backrooms trying to communicate with you, with some flashes of clarity before descending into madness again, and it's delightful.
The kind of insanity that's all smiles and laughter in the face of dark and twisted things like meatbelts and collarbones.
I originally thought that having the lyric video would clear things up. I have left this video with more questions than before I had the lyrics.

I think the term "you day" is supposed to be both implying the things in the Backrooms (and possibly whatever made the Backrooms) don't fully understand things like birthday parties but still mimic them AND conflating the ideas of a birthday party (your day) with a specified day for having a specific food on the menu (e.g. Pizza Day, Taco Day, You Day...)

I don't usually write comments, but this song amazed me.
It is a perfect song for a surreal and lucid place. Just like the Backrooms, "You Day!" takes parts of human creations (words, music) and sews them together. The melody is corrupted, the lyrics don't make much sense but that does not stop you from seeing it as a birthday song - just like yellow walls and the buzzling lamps make us think that we are in an office, despite there being no furniture or people. Amazing.

Edit: the new levels are amazing, there is so much care and detail put into them and I love the fact you spend more time on each level with the different inside - levels, rooms, etc. Pool room and party room were so well done!
Unironically I find myself enjoying this song more and more, I keep coming back to it and I think you may have actually managed to replicate something truly insidious about the backrooms and how it seems to evoke that mockery of your childhood memories and such, it draws me back into it over and over again.

This update really captured the essence of what the Backrooms were intended to be in the first place, "Levels" you go through that feel, sound and look like something straight out of a nightmare (or dream, Snackrooms comes to mind.) And the music definitely helps, this is one of the most cursed pieces I've ever heard. Good job either way.

2:33 I feel like this part is probably really easy to miss as a coherent line of thought if you're only listening to the song, so it's really nice to have all of it written out in one block. Also unsettling, not even due to the lyrics relating to our inherent mortality being juxtaposed to offputting kids' party music, but because it feels like the first extended thought in the lyrics. Like an AI gaining proper sentience, or having a single lucid conversation with someone lost to madness. It's good contrast all-around.
