brent musberger, irv cross, these guys were the best. they had the advantage of working in football's golden age, the 70's and 80's. they set the standard. i loved the nbc coverage of the afc package as well but for me the cbs crew was the best. pat summerall and john madden were the best game announcers. thanks for uploading.
Best day of my life playing high school ball on Friday watching college on Saturday and sitting around with the family spaghetti Italian bread on Sunday
Back in these good old days, I waited anxiously for halftime scores & highlights. That was the only way to see any other favorite's besides the Lions (I know they suck) I just loved other highlights.
Great halftime feature on the Vikings-Cowboys Hail Mary Playoff Game of '75....one note of interest, if Irv Cross stood on that site where Metropolitan Stadium once stood today in 2010, he would be inside the Mall of America
I met Drew Pearson in the Dallas airport and asked him if there was interference on the play. He said "in football there are winners and losers. we won."
I was very lucky to have been born in the early 80's when CBS and NBC's NFL coverage were top notch and I personally, preferred CBS over NBC cause, first I lived the Washington, DC area (And still do) and the NFC East was probably shown more and discussed each week. Brent and Irv were the best
no doubt about it....these pregame shows were the best and so, so much better than the frat boy, garbage pregames of today....Brent, Irv, Phyllis had competence, knowledge, color, and candor in commentary....ahh........the good old days when football was a game rather than multigazzillion dollar entertainment business.
Remember when Football shows were about FOOTBALL..Not stand up comics we haven`t heard of, or bad jokes, On sundays we just want FOOTBALL, that`s why ESPN or The Death Star as I call it has lost touch with the public, why do u need 8 people on a pregame show? All u needed was Brent and Irv!!!
@1:58,Eagles WR #82 the silky, smooth Mike Quick terrorized NFL defenses. At age 29,Quick had lost a half step, but made up for it with toughness. With his strength, concentration, & ability to read a zone defense,Quick consistently got to the open area & made a living spinning away from smaller defenders who tried to bring him down with one shot. Once allowed to run, Quick's acceleration at age 29 was still enough that he could add 10-15 yards to a play and be voted to the Pro Bowl.
@JacuzziBooty Just looked it up. The Giants had a Monday Night game vs. Green Bay at the Meadowlands; which they went on to win 20-10 (too little, too late for Big Blue from a postseason standpoint).
@1:55,Randall Cunningham improved Eagles offense to scoring to 25.2 points per game in 1987 despite WR Mike Quick's loss of a half-step. Cunningham had an extremely quick setup & a cannon for an arm &(in 12 non-strike games)threw for 2,786 yards & 23 TDs to just 12 INTs in '87,& lead the club with 505 yards rushing. He threatened CBs with his arm & feet. But during this time, the Eagles offensive line still couldn't pass protect giving up 54 sacks for 380 lost yards in 12 non-strike games in '87.
The uniforms and the pre / post game shows were way , way , way better in the 80s than the crap they pile on the tv nowadays. They need to go back to a two man team in the studio . 4 or 5 in the studio is crowded.
As others have commented this is only about football and two guys going through highlights and No Stupid Fantasy Football Ticker....gosh how fantasy football has destroyed the game. I so miss the old NFL. Too bad kids today have to grow up on this crap we have to watch with concerts before games, super model sideline reporters, games in London, and no bias coverage towards New York, Dallas, New England, Philadelphia, & Green Bay ( no offense to those teams it's just that the NFL realizes these teams are in the biggest markets and that's all they talk about just look at any Sunday Night Game and I guarantee one of these six franchises will be in 80% of the games.)
You're right, the studio shows in the 1980's were WAY better than the GARBAGE we see nowadays. Everyone here is giving a serious analysis, we are not subject to 5 or more people doing shtick and annoying advertising(having the name of a dumb action movie or TV show always displayed or seeing Jared and a chef talk about subs in studio) from sponsors
@1:45-47,Jets RT Reggie McElroy #68 leads way & was a good athlete with size & feet, but in 1987 McElroy rehabbed from major, reconstructive knee surgery from 1986 injury. His strengths were as a hands-and-feet guy.Jets 1987 1st-round pick FB #43 Roger Vick was quick off mark but not particularly instinctive,& was a straight-up runner who moved the pile & exhibited good body lean.Vick was a productive receiver, above average blocker & hard-worker but Coach Walton's offense was tail-back orientated.
@HamptonRoadsTVFan I was wondering the same thing. Maybe he was injured, or maybe played on Mon night and was available to come in for a guest appearance?
@Lotmeister -- no kidding, FOX is the worst. And what's up with the stupid robot in pads that keeps popping up on the screen during a game? Very annoying.
William Graynard pretty sure it was a Saturday game...they used to do this and it was good to have some unpolished non-opinionated loud mouth talking about the game
Nate Wright needs to stop crying there was no interference on that play, Nate Wright slipped, Drew Pearson did a better job of adjusting to the football, Roger Staubach underthrowing Drew Pearson was what made the difference, had Roger Staubach over threw on that play, Minnesota Vikings likely win that game over the Dallas Cowboys
Look how quietly they talk in contrast to the loud, obnoxious commentators today.
Man, I miss these good old NFL games on CBS with Brent.
Jorge Martinez me to
Brent was good
brent musberger, irv cross, these guys were the best. they had the advantage of working in football's golden age, the 70's and 80's. they set the standard. i loved the nbc coverage of the afc package as well but for me the cbs crew was the best. pat summerall and john madden were the best game announcers. thanks for uploading.
I agree
I do miss the days of no nonsense football. Keep it simple!
I miss those days
Best day of my life playing high school ball on Friday watching college on Saturday and sitting around with the family spaghetti Italian bread on Sunday
does your family eat sunday dinner at 2pm?
@@hotdogwater7037 Sharp!!!!!!
@@toddfeehley4810 paisan! you pretty much described my own childhood. i never understood that particular tradition
LOL probably because we didn't have social media those days!!!
Great stuff. Love how Brent called the Saints comeback in the 2nd half.
Back in these good old days, I waited anxiously for halftime scores & highlights. That was the only way to see any other favorite's besides the Lions (I know they suck) I just loved other highlights.
Great halftime feature on the Vikings-Cowboys Hail Mary Playoff Game of '75....one note of interest, if Irv Cross stood on that site where Metropolitan Stadium once stood today in 2010, he would be inside the Mall of America
that same spot Irv Cross is standing at is where Mall of america is at now
Harry Carson was part of one of the best LB units ever to play, with LT and Carl banks on the outside.
As I recall by 1987 the 49ers won two SBs & about to do a BTB led by Lott & Co. Giants weren't the only ones ringing QBs bells.
I miss this CBS halftime show...
Musburger was prophetic here. Bengals did blow this game, giving up 31 straight in the second half without a score of their own.
To this day (2017) the Jets have still never beaten the Eagles.
LMAO
There was no pass interference on that play
I met Drew Pearson in the Dallas airport and asked him if there was interference on the play. He said "in football there are winners and losers. we won."
This is when I actually liked watching the pre game, halftime, and post game show!
I was very lucky to have been born in the early 80's when CBS and NBC's NFL coverage were top notch and I personally, preferred CBS over NBC cause, first I lived the Washington, DC area (And still do) and the NFC East was probably shown more and discussed each week. Brent and Irv were the best
Harry Carson was One of the First too introduce the Victory Gator Aid Dump
no doubt about it....these pregame shows were the best and so, so much better than the frat boy, garbage pregames of today....Brent, Irv, Phyllis had competence, knowledge, color, and candor in commentary....ahh........the good old days when football was a game rather than multigazzillion dollar entertainment business.

YES 100%

It was actually 38 unanswered points. The Saints were trailing 24-3 in the 2nd Quarter. Brent is a genius!
@ forever football do you have 1987 week 11 highlights the NFL today halftime show my friend
@JacuzziBooty Just looked it up. The Giants had a Monday Night game vs. Green Bay at the Meadowlands; which they went on to win 20-10 (too little, too late for Big Blue from a postseason standpoint).
@StLouisFan38 Damn straight I would love to see a documentary even on RUclips about this version of the NFL Today
@WildBill6942 Especially on Fox. Watching their show is like watching a bunch of frat guys who talk about football every so often.
Offensively the seahawks were great and SB bound but damn that defense though if was better we would have won a 2 sb's in the 80's!
@1:55,Randall Cunningham improved Eagles offense to scoring to 25.2 points per game in 1987 despite WR Mike Quick's loss of a half-step. What was with home teams of the 80s wearing their away white jerseys I know the reason Dallas did it but there were many other 80s teams that did
The uniforms and the pre / post game shows were way , way , way better in the 80s than the crap they pile on the tv nowadays. They need to go back to a two man team in the studio . 4 or 5 in the studio is crowded.

Gregg Russell Amen, brother. What I wouldn't give to be 10 years old again.
What I wouldn't give to be 4 years old again (Jim Nantz did just as remarkably on the college side starting in 1985)!
The head turn at 1:02 should be made into a gif.
@FutureNewsAnchor he would have stayed on until then the NFL switched over the NFC contract over to fox after the 1993 season.
You're right, the studio shows in the 1980's were WAY better than the GARBAGE we see nowadays.
1:08 Good call by Brent on that Saints/Bengals game
Any explanation as to Harry Carson's appearance?
@HamptonRoadsTVFan I was wondering the same thing. Maybe he was injured, or maybe played on Mon night and was available to come in for a guest appearance?
I hope the XFL memics this
CBS lost the NFL in 1993 and got it back in 1998 (AFC) ....... NFC is on FOX
@Lotmeister -- no kidding, FOX is the worst. And what's up with the stupid robot in pads that keeps popping up on the screen during a game? Very annoying.
was carson injured the reason why he was there or had they played a saturday game?
William Graynard pretty sure it was a Saturday game...they used to do this and it was good to have some unpolished non-opinionated loud mouth talking about the game
@ycdtotv Actually, I'm a Pittsburgh fan.
@jdelachjr2002 Thanks.
@kdotmassiv And as it turned out, New Orleans beat Cincinnati 41-24 that day.
Harry Carson was terrible

To this day (2017) the Jets have still never beaten the Eagles.
